Kira looked out of the window with a delighted curiosity. She noticed that the snow had stopped falling for the first time since morning, covering the entire landscape in a thick sheet of white. As far as her eyes could go,everything was white, the trees, the street, her front yard. Everything. It looked like a perfect winter wonderland.
She decided to go for a walk since being trapped into her house all day was taking a toll on her mood. She wasn't too fond of going out but there is a difference between choosing not to do something and being denied of it. The weather forcing her to stay inside made her crave a long walk out in the open between the buzz of the city more than she ever had.
She put on her heaviest long black coat, that reached till her knees, dark blue jeans made of the thickest denim and black boots that were just below her knees. As a final touch to her protective outfit, she took a thick navy blue muffler and wrapped it around her neck, high enough to partially cover her ears. With this she stepped out of her house. Her feet made a deep print in the fresh snow as she breathed in the chilling air that made her feel like her lungs had been frozen.
"Oops I almost forgot." She muttered to herself as she ran back in to fetch her purse. She had a habit of never leaving the house without any money even when she was taking a simple walk. She shoved the small purse into her coat pocket and finally left her house.
While her neighborhood seemed deserted, the market area was very much alive and in its full swing. People didn't seem to be bothered by the cold at all. It's like they were completely ignoring the fact that it was one of the coldest weathers to ever befall that small city.
She quickly paced from one street to another, making her way through the various groups and couples casually strolling on the sidewalk. While she walked, she looked around, taking in the atmosphere, mentally commenting on anything and everything her eyes could take note of. She loved spending time alone like this.
As she took a turn near the bookshop, checking out the posters of the new arrivals in there, mentally making a decision on which book she would buy on her way back, she suddenly bumped into a figure. She stumbled back as a reflex, dazed at this sudden contact and a sudden detachment from her thoughts.
When she looked up, she found in front of her, a boy with blonde hair tied into a low ponytail, deep brown eyes and dark skin. He wore a red coat and a dark grey scarf neatly wrapped around his neck.
"Umm...I'm sorry." She mumbled, brows knit into a frown.
"It's okay. You really should pay more attention to your surroundings you know." He commented while taking a casual look at her from head to toe followed by a smirk. Kira felt uncomfortable under his intense gaze. She wanted to leave but he was sort of in her way.
She tried to get past him anyway but was immediately stopped by him as he shifted to block her way.
"What's your name?" He asked, amusement evident in his voice. Kira was getting worried now. She just wanted to get away from there as soon as possible. She did not answer and tried to go the other way. He blocked it again.
"I won't hurt you,you know. I'm just asking your name." He spoke again. Kira glared at him in response. She didn't like the way how every sentence that left his mouth was filled with amusement like he was really enjoying messing with her with this pointless conversation.
"Look, I am not going to tell you my name. Just let me go or else..." She froze before she could complete her sentence. Her eyes widened as she processed what was happening and that was: a soft pair of lips landing on her cheek, those lips belonging to the mysterious blonde boy she was just talking to, more like, avoiding talking to.
As soon as he pulled back, a palm landed on his cheek followed by an angry exclamation,
"How dare you?!"
A few passers-by looked in their direction quizzically but it didn't hold their interest for long and they did not stop to ask what was the matter. He remained unfazed or at least that's what it looked like.
"I couldn't help it. You're really pretty." He shrugged carelessly.
"Shut up!"
With that she walked away, pushing him aside. She didn't look back to find out his response to her outburst.
With quick and firm steps she crossed the market, huffing and angrily mumbling to herself, reaching the park. There were fewer people present here than the market area. She marched up to a bench and flopped down on it not before brushing some snow off it. She took deep breaths in an attempt to calm herself but his voice kept echoing in her mind. The incident played over and over in her head making her angrier. Finally, she decided to distract herself by getting a new book from the bookstore. Buying books always cheered her up without fail.
She retraced her way back to the bookstore then, the same spot where she met that annoying stranger. She took one last glance at those posters, making a final decision on what book she was going to buy and stepped towards the entrance door. Coincidently, just then her hand went into her coat pocket where her wallet was supposed to be.
Supposed to be.
But now there was nothing. She frantically ran her hand around in there only to find it vacant. She then hysterically checked all the pockets the coat provided thinking she kept it in another one absentmindedly.
She found nothing.
She wildly circled around that place looking around in the snow hoping to find it lying there but all her efforts went in vain. Tears welled up in her eyes. This was turning out to be the worst day ever. First, that annoying boy kisses her without her permission...
"Him!" She widened her teary eyes as the thought clicked in her mind. Suddenly, it all made sense. The kiss was just a distraction while he carefully swiped her wallet. She was so spent in yelling at him she didn't even notice. Her brows formed a tight frown again as she mentally cursed him for a full minute right there in front of the bookstore. But she couldn't do anything more than that. He was long gone and there were no traces of him left except for hints of footprints, mixed with several others, in the snowy pavement. Defeated, she headed back to her house slowly dragging her feet in a small stride. So much for a walk in the city.
She remained gloomy over it for a day or two but as time passed the incident faded from her memory. Life is too short and too complicated to worry about such trivial things. She moved on almost forgetting every detail of it except for one. She remembered clearly what he looked like. She remembered his long blonde hair, his deep brown eyes. She remembered the fiery red jacket he wore and the smoky grey muffler around his neck. She had to admit he looked quite extraordinary and she hated herself for thinking that.
One day, several weeks after to be exact, she strolled through that same market again heading towards that bookstore. She had never got a chance to buy that book she wanted since she had no money that day and she never found the time to go back there. The pavement still had a little bit of snow, gathered in small heaps from place to place, since it had snowed the day before. She walked carefully, both her hands tucked in her respective coat pockets, holding the wallet in one of them, tightly. She carefully walked being overly cautious of her surrounding. She didn't want to make any mistakes. After her last time in the market, she had become quite paranoid.
As the bookstore came closer and closer she felt a little uneasy, everything rushing back to her. She could almost see that blonde boy in his red coat leaning against the wall with one foot up and resting against it just near the corner where she bumped into him. No, wait!
He was really there.
She wasn't imagining it. He really was present there. As soon as she realized it, anger boiled in her mind. She didn't expect to see him ever again yet somehow it was happening. She quickly marched up to him giving him the deadliest glare she could manage.
"You have some nerve showing up here again after what you did." She spoke quietly through gritted teeth.
"That's what I want to talk about. Can we go somewhere quieter?" He responded in a perfectly calm manner.
"I am not going anywhere with you!" She ignored his politeness thinking it was another one of his tricks. She wasn't about to fall into anymore traps.
"Fine.Fine." He defensively held up his hands in front of him. He then dug his hands into his pocket and brought out an object familiar to Kira.
"Here." He tossed the wallet towards her and she instinctively caught it. She quickly looked inside it and found everything intact and in its place. It seemed like it was never opened. She was completely baffled at this action and couldn't respond with anything other than a puzzled gaze on him.
"Look, I'm sorry okay. I don't do this every day. I have been trying to return it to you since that day and I waited for you here but you never showed up." He seemed genuinely regretful. Kira was still unsure though.
"I don't believe this." She mumbled with annoyance. Her anger had toned down a lot but still it was not completely gone.
"Why would I return it to you if I really wanted to steal it?"
"You tell me." She raised an eyebrow.
"It was a stupid bet I made with my friends." He seemed embarrassed to admit it.
"What kind of a bet is that! You're right. That is quite stupid. I can have you arrested for this you know?" She retorted.
"You won't,will you?" He looked at her naively silently pleading not to do something so extreme. If she hadn't been so angry she would have laughed at his expression. But she still felt resentful for being the victim of a distasteful joke. She didn't say anything and walked into the bookstore. The boy followed closely.
"You never told me if you forgave me or not." He said after a minute of silence.
"Just stop bothering me and move along already." Came an annoyed reply from her. After that she ignored him and continued to shuffle through the books that were neatly stacked on the shelves. Her eyes brightened up as she found the one she was looking for. She eyed the front cover enthusiastically and flipped a couple of pages catching a few words in the process.
"Let me buy that for you as an apology." The boy interrupted her pristine moment with her beloved book. Her smile turned into a frown as she looked up at him again.
"I thought I told you to leave me alone." She commented.
"Oh come on, you're not even giving me a chance to make up for my mistake," He complained innocently. He followed it with that naive look from before, coupled with a friendly smile, for a few seconds before adding, "Please...?"
Kira glared at him while she pondered on it. She now felt she might be acting too harsh. Afterall, he did return the wallet to her, intact. She thought she could let it go now. Besides, the sooner she forgave him, the sooner she can put this whole thing behind her for good.
"Fine." She finally softened her expression and headed towards the counter.
By the time they came out the bookstore, the anger she harbored for him was gone and now the entire incident seemed ridiculous and somewhat hilarious to her. She happily carried the paper bag containing the book, the boy bought for her as a peace offering. As she waved goodbye and turned to walk away he stopped her.
"Umm...wait." He called out. She turned to face him and wondered what could he want now.
"Can we be friends?" He asked hopefully.
"And why would you want that?" She interjected.
"Because you seem like an interesting person...and you're really pretty. I wasn't lying about that back then."
She narrowed her eyes at this reply and stared at him as she crossed her arms against her chest. He smiled sheepishly in return.
"I guess we can. But only so I can meet your friends and tell them that they make stupid bets. " She replied with a smirk. His eyes lit up with delight at this.
"So what is your name?I'm asking you for the third time." He joked.
"Riye Kira." She dramatically whispered acting like she was revealing a huge secret, earning a chuckle in response. "And what's your's?" She demanded.
"Gouenji Shuuya."
