Arïma VanWysse has recently reached the age of sixteen, the age when each female is separated from their families and sent to one of the female sectors based on their skills.

Arïma is stripped of her identity, and is referred to as FM531. She is given living quarters in Sector 5, one of the three sectors in Gilead designated to women.

In what was once the US states of Utah (sector4), Colorado (sector5), and Nevada (sector 6), all women over age 16 are "put to good use to repopulate the world." Their job descriptions consist of one thing: sex. In this torturous society, the best part of the job was working for kind men. However, Arïma in particular works for the worst boss:
