Prologue

His screams echoed around the tunnel and the man tutted in annoyance.

"We're in public, Sir," He said, reaching up and giving his face a couple of light slaps with his blood covered hand, "You'll disturb the neighbours if you shout like that,"

He tightened the grip of his other hand and pulled, letting out a sigh as the wet crunch of bone being broken and ripped away met his ears like musical notes.

His patients screams gurgled into silence and he sat back on his heels, reaching into his bag for a specimen jar.

Usually, he would tie his patients down as he worked, but this one has struggled and fought, so it was a much sloppier job than usual.

Still, the heart was still pumping weakly in the chest, so it wasn't a complete failure.

Carefully, with perfectly precise fingers, he severed the ties to the body and scooped the heart out, laying it gently inside the jar. It was a healthy heart, albeit a little stressed, but it would make a good replacement.

Once he screwed the lid on, he licked and sucked his fingers clean and cocked his head to the side.

Sirens.

He knew he should've waited, but he was desperate as the last heart was unhealthy, despite all outside appearances.

Operating in public was not a good idea, in hindsight.

He carefully slotted the jar into a padded container in his doctors bag and quickly put his tools away.

Standing, he surveyed the area before deciding to take the left exit. It was dark and that side, although further from his abode, had the cover of the forest.

He buttoned his oversized white coat and took off into the darkness, gripping the handle of his old fashioned doctors bag tightly so it wouldn't swing as much.

However, he skidded to a halt when bright lights hit him and the sound of multiple guns being cocked filled the air.

"Drop the bag and put your hands on your head!"

He let out a sigh and placed his bag on the floor.

"If we could speed things up a little, chaps," He said with a soft smile, "I have a heart I need to replace,"
