8 - Control
The house was pretty quiet the next morning. It appeared as if last night's mission left almost everyone utterly exhausted since five of the members of Bangtan still remained asleep in bed. The fearless leader and his right-hand man had been up since five in the morning, meeting in Yoongi's office in order to go over last night's mission and review some new issues that have shown up on their radar lately that would require a bit of a shift in their team dynamics.
Jin was also up early, already hiding out in his lab, the black case from their bust last night sitting on his table as he had a small bag out, examining the drug and trying to figure out its purpose. He knew that testing it out on anyone would be risky, so until he could figure out whether it was safe or not, he would determine what was in the drug and research more the purpose of each element that was in it.
Taehyung groaned as he got up, rubbing his eyes as he tiredly glanced over at Jimin, who was laying on his stomach, shirtless, with drool soaking into his pillow. Taehyung scrunched up his nose before getting out of bed, grabbing his shirt off the floor and quietly shutting the door behind him.
He was surprised when he saw Charlie sitting in the dining room, a bowl of cereal in front of her.
"Good morning," he greeted, heading into the kitchen to make himself some toast.
"Good morning Tae, how're you?" she asked.
"I'm good," he replied, looking up at her and glancing at the small bruises on her face before his eyebrows furrowed. "I feel like I should be asking you that," he said, a boxy smile on his lips as she let out a light laugh.
"I'm good, took a few hits last night, but nothing too scary," she reassured while he hummed, shifting his attention back to his toast as it popped out of the small toaster oven. He spread some Nutella on it and added some fruit before joining her at the table, the two of them engaging in some small talk.
Both of them looked up as they heard footsteps coming from the hall, eagerly greeting Hoseok, who was followed by a disheveled looking Jungkook.
Charlie let out a small laugh as she stared at her friend's crazy hair, dark locks going in all directions. He shot her a glare, but it didn't phase her as she continued to giggle while Hoseok smiled at the sound. Jungkook walked over to the kitchen, also deciding on eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast while Hoseok went for his usual morning coffee.
"How's the tattoo?" Hoseok asked, glancing at the two youngest members.
"It's still a bit sore, but nothing too bad," Charlie admitted while Jungkook nodded in agreement.
"Wait, Jungkook got one too? Can I see them?" Taehyung eagerly asked while Charlie laughed, standing up before lifting her shirt a bit, revealing the top half of the phoenix. "Wow! That's pretty cool. How big is it?" Taehyung gushed while Charlie grinned and thanked him for the compliment before gesturing to her upper thigh. "That's huge!" he continued while Charlie laughed.
"Show him yours Kook," Charlie said. Jungkook put the spoon down, reaching for his sleeve as the tattoo was peeking out from under it. Taehyung's eyes widened as he looked at the feathers on Jungkook's shoulder, amazed by the detailing in the ink, complimenting his tattoo as well before they resumed eating their food.
The four of them sat in the kitchen for a while, just chatting a bit before deciding to head down to the basement. Taehyung was eager to work with Hoseok on the newest smoke bomb the elder has been working on while Jungkook, noticing that Jimin was still not up, offered to spar with Charlie for a bit.
"You sure you're going to be able to spar? You're not in too much pain, right?" he asked, gesturing towards her tattoo.
"Let's just take it easy, okay?" she suggested while he agreed.
Jungkook made sure to avoid hitting the side where her fresh tattoo was while she tried to avoid hitting his arm. He was the one who threw the first hit, which Charlie successfully dodged. The two continued to throw hit after hit, both easily dodging each other's moves. Jimin finally came down, still sleepy as he glanced at the two sparring, sitting down off to the side as he watched them. Charlie managed to throw a kick to Jungkook's side, causing him to playfully gasp before glaring at her while she smirked at him.
"Oh, you are so dead," he said, causing her to squeal as she started to run while Jungkook chased her, earning both Hoseok's and Taehyung's attention. Jimin, feeling awkward being close to the two friends, decided to join Hoseok and Taehyung, continuing to curiously watch as Jungkook was still chasing Charlie while her laugh echoed in the room.
"I swear, I still think the two of them have a thing together," Hoseok mumbled to the younger men standing beside him.
"I give it 6 months before they actually end up together," Taehyung said, earning a look from the elder.
"Nah, I say a year," Jimin chimed in, folding his arms against his chest. Taehyung then held out his hand to his friend who gladly took it, sealing their bet.
The three continued to watch the two curiously as Jungkook finally managed to catch Charlie, hoisting her over onto his untattooed shoulder while she slapped his ass, demanding for him to put her down. What an odd friendship...
"What the fuck is going on?" Yoongi asked, standing at the foot of the stairs with Namjoon right behind him, trying to figure out why Charlie was hanging off of Jungkook's shoulder.
"We were just training a bit," Jungkook said, immediately setting Charlie back down while Yoongi stared at the two with a raised eyebrow.
"Sure you were," Namjoon commented, a sly grin on his face while Jimin snickered at the comment. Charlie rolled her eyes, trying to deny the heat creeping up on her cheeks as she crossed her arms.
"Alright, well, let's get back on track," Yoongi stated, changing the subject as he gestured for everyone to join at their usual table. "We wanted to go over some things with the team. There's a new target we've been watching for quite a while now and I wanted to get a chance to go over the intel we've gathered so far. Could someone go get Jin?" he requested as he set down a folder on the table.
Taehyung went to the closed door leading to the lab, knocking on it before dragging Jin over to the table.
Yoongi pulled out a few sheets of paper before dropping a picture in the middle of the table. Charlie's brows furrowed as she noticed the familiar man, trying to recall where she'd seen him before when Yoongi interrupted her thoughts as he spoke again.
"Our next target is someone who is working for Ganghan. Taehyung has been tailing the guy, trying to get more information, but he's like a ghost. He's quite difficult to find, but we're getting closer to finding his location, which is why we need to act fast. We have reason to believe that he's involved in human trafficking. We'd like to get him and bring him in for questioning, figure out more about the business in order to put a stop to it," he informed, pausing as he looked at Charlie for a moment before glancing at Namjoon.
"Namjoon and I have been discussing the matter and figured it would be best if we could send someone in undercover," he started, clearing his throat before his gaze settled on Charlie. "We would like to add a title to your role in this group. For this mission, we would need you to be...a seductress. Once we can get to the target, it would be your role to seduce him, get him into a room, and then knock him out so that we can get him back here," Yoongi shared.
Charlie could feel the anger start to build in her as she placed her hands on her hips, but she tried to remain calm as she addressed her leader.
"Is that the reason why you're keeping me around, because I'm a woman?" she asked, watching Yoongi intently. He let out a sigh as he pinched the bridge of his nose, his gaze locked onto her irate one. He was getting ready to speak when Jimin cut him off.
"Have I mentioned that I really like her Yoongs?" the grey haired man said, giving Charlie his classic teasing smile.
"You're one to talk," Charlie harshly replied, rolling her eyes as she scoffed at Jimin's comment.
Sure, they had lived together for awhile and tried to remain friendly, especially when sparring, but Charlie was starting to feel more and more like a piece of meat to him. The incessant teasing and surface level relationship the two had really backed up her thoughts. She just thought it would stop eventually, but instead, he teased her more, which made him slightly intolerable at times and Charlie had finally had enough.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" he asked her, trying to hide the slight heaviness that settled in his chest at her words.
"You know exactly what I mean! You are always making comments about how I look or teasing me in some weird, sexual manner. I'm more than a body and a pretty face," she seethed. Charlie was getting angry and her volume was pretty loud. As she glared at Jimin, she noticed that for once, he didn't wink or smirk at her. She waited for the smartass comment to follow, but he only shook his head.
Sure, Jimin loved teasing Charlie ever since she had walked into the house, but he thought of it as a form of harmless hazing, and she definitely took it well. With every eye roll and smartass comment she shot back at him, he only smiled more because he hoped that she was finally getting comfortable with him. However, with this comment, he couldn't have been more wrong about his assumptions as he could now hear the hatred in her tone and see the disgust on her face. He decided to stay quiet, not wanting to address this right now in front of the others. He tried to ignore the slight annoyance he felt, but her words still stung him more than he wanted to admit.
"We can go over the details of the assignment tomorrow morning," Yoongi said, trying to ease the tension that everyone felt from the confrontation between the two younger members. "Charlie, can I speak with you in my office please?" he requested before dismissing everyone else. He picked up the file and headed upstairs, not even looking to see if Charlie was following him.
Jungkook walked over to Charlie, placing a hand on her arm. "What was that about?" he whispered.
"Nothing, I'm just sick of him," she replied, shaking her head. "I should probably get to his office," she added, brushing away Jungkook's touch as the nervousness was evident in her voice.
"I'm coming with you then, I'm not a fan of this new role of yours," Jungkook said before the two walked to Yoongi's office.
When they finally entered, Yoongi was confused as to why Jungkook was there, but brushed it off since he knew how close the two were and could probably guess why Jungkook decided to join their meeting. He gestured for them both to sit in the seats across from him, shifting slightly in his own chair before leaning against the desk, his eyes immediately meeting Charlie's.
"I want to start off by saying that I will never force you to do anything Charlie. Doing this assignment, or anything else in the future that requires..." he cleared his throat, "a woman's touch is always optional."
Jungkook stood up and grabbed Charlie's hand. "Perfect, let's go Charlie," he rushed out, eager to dismiss the conversation. He tried to walk to the door but Charlie held onto his hand and didn't move.
"Go on," Charlie said, staring back at Yoongi while Jungkook sighed before sitting back down.
She had pretty much made up her mind that she wouldn't do it, but she was still curious about the details of the situation and why they needed her specifically. Yoongi gave her a small smile before he continued.
"As I've mentioned before, we have gathered enough intel to pretty much confirm that Ganghan is kidnapping women and selling them... so, sex trafficking," he stated. While Yoongi's voice was calm, the anger on his face could not be hidden. Charlie became furious as well, her original answer already changing in her mind as she now had an incentive to accept her new role. She wasn't going to sit back and let something bad happen to other women, not if she could put a stop to it. "Do you remember the first night you met Jin? At the Bleeding Rose?" Yoongi inquired, pulling her away from her thoughts.
Charlie turned to Jungkook as they both tried to remember that night, the night that started all of this.
"Yeah, pretty well actually," she replied, furrowing her brows as she faced Yoongi again. It took a few seconds before the realization hit as she now knew why the man in the picture looked so familiar. "The guy from the bar," she commented.
Yoongi nodded in confirmation. "Apparently, he is a low-rank member of Ganghan. His job is to find women to traffic, to sell." Charlie's insides started to twist as she already knew where he was going with this. "You were his target that night," he added. Charlie composed herself even though she felt sick to her stomach and angry... No, she was enraged! "Jin was there watching him, that's why he stepped in," Yoongi concluded, noticing the way she clenched her jaw and tried to remain calm.
"Wow," she uttered. Charlie buried her face in her hands, trying to process everything that Yoongi just shared.
"He's our target because we need more information from him about how they are selecting the girls and where they are kept. You will be fitted with a smaller earpiece, and a small team will never be too far away from you. We can plan a code word or phrase, so if at any time you don't feel safe, you let us know and the team will be there," he reassured.
"Why do you need to know where the girls are kept? Shouldn't this be something that is reported to the police?" she asked.
Charlie thought it was strange that the mafia was doing something that the police should be doing. Yes, they were into drug trafficking and laundered their money through the casino and club, but why get involved in something like this?
"They're all dirty. Ganghan has their hand in the department, so the police tend to let things slip." Yoongi sat back and took a deep breath. "We are getting involved because this is wrong, and also because we want to see Ganghan crumble to the ground," he admitted. Yoongi tried to gauge what Charlie was thinking, but he received a blank look.
"Can I have a bit of time to think about it?" she asked. Jungkook shot his head over towards her, clearly stunned by her consideration. He was hoping she would say no, but he could already tell that she was leaning towards agreeing to it.
"Of course, but if you could let me know by the end of the night, I'd appreciate it. That way, I can get everything in place and come up with a proper plan depending on your answer," he replied.
"By the end of the night, you got it," she said. Charlie and Jungkook stood up and headed for the door.
"Oh, by the way," Yoongi started, causing them both to turn back towards him. "You both did good yesterday. Take some time today to relax, you've earned it." He smiled while they both returned the gesture, heading out of his office to Charlie's room.
Jungkook closed the door while Charlie let her body fall onto her bed. So many thoughts and emotions were bouncing around in her head right now. She really didn't want to lure a man into a private room, especially after the very public altercation she had with Jimin, but when Yoongi explained why, every doubt and bad thought she had was silenced.
"What are you thinking about?" Jungkook asked.
He always knew when Charlie was contemplating something. She would spin her small, silver stud earrings while spacing out. It had been her tell ever since they had met and Charlie hated how obvious she was. She actually never realized that she was doing it until Jungkook would call her out on it.
"Everything he just said Kook," she mumbled, letting out a sigh. Charlie pulled her fingers from her ear and placed them in her lap as she sat up. Jungkook stood in front of her with his arms crossed.
"Are you actually thinking about doing this, Char?" Jungkook asked with an extremely worried look that, for some reason, made Charlie feel guilty. She looked up at him and gave him a sad smile. He quickly walked over to the bed and sat down next to her. "It's just... with everything that's happened before-"
"Stop," she interrupted. "That was over two years ago. I need to move on at some point, and besides, I'm going to be helping other girls." Charlie shifted so she was facing her best friend. "No one should be treated like they're an object that's sold to the highest bidder, it's revolting and wrong. If there's something that I can do to stop it, then I'm going to do it. I can't just sit back and do nothing Kook. Besides, I'm going to be the one in control, and if anything goes wrong, you guys will be there. You... you do promise to be there, right?" she wondered.
He sighed before giving in, like always. "Of course I'm going to be there, and if anything goes wrong, you better believe I'll be the first one in that room," he replied. Charlie couldn't help but lunge at him, wrapping her arms around his neck as Jungkook giggled and held her close.
"So, do you want to explain what happened between you and Jimin?" he asked, still holding her in his arms. Charlie pulled away and glared at him.
"I think it was pretty clear," she responded.
"Do you really think he looks at you as some prize he needs to win?"
Jungkook had spent a lot of time with Jimin and they got along perfectly. Yes, he knew Jimin teased Charlie and that she was annoyed by it, but he figured it was just some sort of cute, sibling rivalry. Jungkook honestly didn't think it bothered her that much until her outburst earlier indicated otherwise.
"Kind of, yeah! The only time we really talk is when he makes comments about the way I look or how I suck at fighting. He's just another man," Charlie said, lowering her gaze.
"Hey!" Jungkook said, nudging her.
"You know what I mean," she mumbled, rolling her eyes.
"He's a really great guy, Charlie. Maybe you two should get to know each other a little more," Jungkook suggested. He felt bad for her, but he truly believed that Jimin had different intentions on why he teased her all the time, even though he wasn't sure what they would be. He reached out and lightly rubbed her back, trying to comfort her.
"There's not much I care to know about, Kook. He's a man who owns a club for fucks sakes." Charlie stood up from her bed and walked over to her dresser. "I'm going to take a shower," she grumbled. She stopped and turned back to Jungkook, giving him a look. He took the hint and got up, making sure to close the door behind him.
Charlie let out a loud sigh and headed towards her bathroom to take a much needed, relaxing shower while Jungkook decided to try to fix this whole situation between his best friend and Jimin.
He walked over to Jimin and Taehyung's room, hoping Jimin was there. The door was closed, and when he knocked, he heard a 'come in' before entering the room. He saw Jimin laying down on his bed scrolling through his phone. Jungkook made sure to close the door before taking a step further into the room.
"What's up JK?" Jimin asked, not tearing his eyes away from his screen.
"Are you busy?" Jungkook inquired. He peeked into the small room that Taehyung usually occupied, and sure enough there he was, facing his screens with his headphones on, doing what he does best.
"Not really," Jimin mumbled, putting down his phone as he sat up, facing the youngest member of Bangtan.
"I have a question to ask you," Jungkook said, nervous for this awkward confrontation.
"Does it have anything to do with Charlie?" Jimin asked. He had wondered how long it would be before Charlie's bodyguard showed up to scold him. Hell, he was surprised that Jungkook hadn't told him to stop earlier.
"It is," Jungkook replied as he sat down on Taehyung's bed.
"Look, she needs to get a backbone and realize it's just words. There are worse things that will hurt her," Jimin said. He rolled his eyes for added effect, but hoped that Jungkook wouldn't see through his tough facade.
"Jimin, I know you don't mean anything by it, but she doesn't. We have been here for a couple months and we have gotten to know each other really well, but there are..." Jungkook paused trying to find the right words. "It's just... Charlie doesn't have the best experience with people who don't see her for who she truly is. You and I both know that she is tough, but this is the first time in a while that I have seen her actually upset."
Jungkook looked up at Jimin, who had his head down as he could feel that same heavy feeling from earlier weighing on his chest.
Jimin knew he probably should've stopped teasing Charlie a month ago, but it seemed to be their thing. She already had a best friend in Jungkook and easily clicked with his own best friend, so he hoped to have a special bond with her as well. Was it weird to say that maybe he was jealous? The way he viewed Charlie did not match what he said to her, and it was about time she knew that.
"I was planning on talking to her later," he mumbled quietly. "I want you to know that I do feel bad about it. I just... I didn't realize that it would upset her that much," he admitted.
"I know Jimin, thanks," Jungkook said before standing up. "You know, we should do something fun tonight, celebrate," he added, flashing Jimin a small smile in an attempt to change the mood.
As if he was listening the whole time, Taehyung walked out of his cave and into the room, easily jumping into the conversation. "We should go to the club!" he suggested, a huge grin on his face.
"Cliff Hangers?" Jungkook asked.
"Fuck yeah!" he said before turning to Jimin.
"Yeah, I'm down, just... remember that we're there to celebrate, alright?" he requested, causing Taehyung to nervously chuckle while Jungkook curiously glanced at the two. "Hey, do you think we can get the whole house to go?" Jimin eagerly asked.
"Good luck with Charlie," Jungkook said, chuckling lightly.
"Don't worry, I'll find a way to wear her down," Taehyung said with a smirk.
