The Wedding

Nathan watched as his brother rose to his feet. He slipped on his black leather shoes, lifting the trousers up high enough for Nathan to see his metal leg. Mason turned around, a nervous smile on his face.

"I think I'm done," he whispered.

Nathan chuckled, walking over to him. "I know you spent a lot of money on those cufflinks and if I had known before hand, I would have stopped you. These are dad's, well our great grandfather's cufflinks."

As Nathan changed them, he felt his brother's gaze on him. "I'm sorry I wasn't here for your wedding."

"Nonsense. You were meant to be here, had your stay here and then they took you away."

Mason nodded his head and lifted his arm up to admire the work on the silver cufflinks. "I really wish dad was here."

They both sighed. Their father had passed away two years ago, leaving the two sons to look after their mother. She had handled it bravely, knowing his time was coming to an end. So now she sat at the front row, her boyfriend beside her.

"He would have loved to finally see you tie the knot. He told you millions of times, 'marry her, what on earth are you thinking?'" Nathan said with a chuckle.

"It's as though I can hear him saying it right now," Mason said with a smile. "I just never thought she'd stay, you know? Waiting for her husband to come back home, praying that he wouldn't die...I thought she would leave."

"Listen to me, big bro," Nathan said as he placed a hand on his brother's shoulder, "Francesca loves you. You guys went through a lot together and to still be standing here, thirteen years later...I have to give it to you."

* * *

Andy smiled, feeling Nathan place his hand on her thigh as he stared ahead. He then pulled it away, throwing his arm around her shoulder with a sigh. His hand rubbed against her bump, feeling the baby kick beneath his fingertips.

He remembered coming home, the bright sun glaring at the back of his head. He stepped through the door and sighed with relief at the coolness of his house. Sebastian ran up to him, giggling as he always did. Carrying him, he walked into the kitchen where a box lay on the table with his name on it. Cautiously, he untied the ribbon and lifted the shiny navy lid. In the middle lay a folded baby vest along with a pair of tiny shoes.

'HERE COMES BABY NO.2' said the note.

'I'M GOING TO BE A BIG BROTHER!'

"I love you," Andy whispered, bringing him out his thoughts. He smiled against her hair before leaning down to kiss her.

"Alright everyone," Carr called, being the DJ for the night. "Settle down, it's time for the speech!" The crowd applauded and Nathan kissed Andy once agin. "Lets leave the lips alone, best man, you'll have plenty of time for that later."

Nathan pulled away with a chuckle, a light blush forming on his cheeks. He raised his hands in surrender and faced the crowd.

"Lieutenant- sorry, Nathan, who is the best man when he isn't snogging the life out of his pregnant wife- it's a girl by the way- should now be ready for his speech." Nathan rose to his feet, smiling at his brother.

"First of all, if you all haven't met the DJ, he is usually referred to as Carr. Simon Carr. And he is a complete- let's not, there are kids here," he said with a laugh. "Right, let's get onto the speech." He glanced down at his brother and smiled once again. "Our father was at my wedding, when I married Andy, and he told me, 'Never give up. If something goes wrong, take a step back, breathe, then solve it because giving up means that there is no more love.' Loads of people would agree, some disagree and I get both their sides, I really do. But my father, even on my wedding day, told me he wished he could see Mason get married because he had already been going out with Frankie for about ten years, had four children with her and still didn't believe in marriage.

I get it, some people don't want to get married, and I really thought my brother was one like that. But then he told me the truth. We were sitting down in the pub, on our second beer and he probably didn't mean to but he did. Told me he was scared Frankie would leave him when he was out at war or that he didn't want her tied down to him, worrying if he would come home the next time he was sent home. Like I said about what my father said, I have seen these two go through thick and thin and for those who have a loved one in the military, you would understand. It wasn't easy on either side and they both suffered in different ways. But despite everything, I've seen them become stronger, not letting those things break them apart."

He smiled nervously, staring at the smiling faces of the crowd. "Let me tell how they met. Frankie had just come out the toilet and Luke, being the seven year old kid, thought he was a big man and went to the men's. So, Luke, and I know you're with your girlfriend right now, but he peed himself." He glanced across the table and watched Luke face palmed himself. "I'm sorry, I'm the worst uncle aren't I? But he's twenty-one now, he can hold it in. But basically, Mason was home for a few months and we had a few cousins over and some were young so we had some spare clothes in a bag. Mason helped change Luke while he was sobbing, saying he ruined his favourite pants and whatnot. Again, sorry Luke. So he goes out and he's holding Mason's hand while I took the cousins back to our group. Frankie...my goodness can that woman throw a punch. She thought he was taking him away, threw a punch right on his jaw and I laughed so hard. But things were straightened out and it was Frankie that took him out for lunch to apologise.

I've watched my older brother and Frankie fall in love, and I was lucky to see that. They are both such great people, so genuine, so loyal and even better parents. Mason took Luke as his own and I have never heard him say anything otherwise. And having a soldier as a husband is not easy. They went through a lot and I've just seen them come back stronger. I want to say thank you to Frankie for being someone who my brother can turn to at his darkest times, someone who he can be himself around and you still love him.

So I can't sing to save my life, even ask Andy that when I tried to sing for our anniversary- it didn't end well. So as Carr is a great singer, I've asked him to sing a song for me that I have dedicated to my brother."

Carr left the stand and pulled his guitar over his head. He walked up to the stage where a chair was left waiting for him. His eyes caught Jessica and he smiled.

"Alright ladies and gentlemen, this song is called Brother by Kodaline." Nathan sat back in his seat as he heard Carr start to sing.

We've taken different paths and traveled different roads

I know we'll always end up on the same one when we're old

And when you're in the trenches and you're under fire I will cover you

Mason patted Nathan's back with a smile on his face. His eyes were focussed on Carr as he sang. Nathan watched as his older brother lifted a tissue to his eyes.

If I was dying on my knees

You would be the one to rescue me

And if you were drowned at sea

I'd give you my lungs so you could breathe

Mason felt Frankie lay a hand on his thigh and chuckled softly, wiping away his tears.

We're living different lives, heaven only knows

If we'll make it back with all our fingers and our toes

5 years, 20 years come back, we'll always be the same

If I was dying on my knees

You would be the one to rescue me

And if you were drowned at sea

I'd give you my lungs so you could breathe

Both the brothers looked at each other with a smile. Mason put a hand on Nathan's cheek before leaning over and kissing his head. It was something their father had done as a way to say thank you.

I got you brother...

"I'm so glad I've got you as a brother, you know that?"

"And I'm thankful I had someone great as you to look up to." Nathan rose to his feet with a laugh. "Thank you for that Carr. Let's give it up for the happy couple!"

Andy walked over to Nathan who was reading a story to Sebastian. She put the tray down on the table and sat down with a sigh.

"...and that's how superman saved the day once again."

"Daddy, can I be superman for Halloween?" Nathan smiled at his son before kissing his head.

"Of course you can, Seb. Now, let's drink your milkshake like a good boy, yeah?"

Sebastian nodded his head and picked up his banana milkshake from the tray. Andy rubbed her stomach, feeling the baby kick. "Nathe?"

"Yeah pumpkin?" he asked as he sat next to her. He kissed her cheek, frowning when she groaned. "Is everything okay?"

"Yeah she's just a little restless today. I think it's just because I've been on my feet since yesterday."

"I told you to sit down and have some rest didn't I? So now our daughter has to give you grief for you to know to dial it down a little?" Andy smiled innocently as she looked up to him. She tilted her head up and pecked his lips. "No. You don't get to kiss me and hope I forgive you. You know what's gonna happen now?" She hummed against his lips. "I'm gonna run you a bath, you're gonna relax, I'll take Seb for a walk and we'll get some things for dinner on the way home. You're gonna have control over the remote in our room so if it's the Kardashians you want all day then you'll get that. Sebastian and I will make some dinner, isn't that right?"

"Yes, Daddy!"

"And we'll have dinner together, put Seb to sleep and you'll relax, understood?" Nathan looked over to Sebastian who was smiling at them both. "Go and get ready kiddo. We're gonna go shopping."

"Can I wear my cape?"

"Go ahead." Once Sebastian ran away, Nathan leaned down and pulled Andy in for a kiss. "That boy is obsessed with that cape."

"He wants to be a superman so just let him," Andy said with a laugh. "You take such good care of me. Thank you."

"You are my wife, the mother of my child- children and most importantly, the woman I love. I will always take care of you." He kissed her stomach before leaning up to kiss her. "I love you."

"I love you too," she whispered.

He tilt his head down a little to kiss her again, smiling slowly when he felt the baby kick softly under his hand. He pulled back and chuckled. "Daddy loves you too, Angel," he whispered before kissing Andy's stomach. "Daddy loves you all."

Ahh 😭😭
