9- Locked In

(Had to add this! ☺️)

6 MONTHS LATER
* * *

Andy frowned at the pregnancy tests in her hands. All three were saying the same thing. She let out a frustrated groan before chucking them in the bin.

"Hey pumpkin, have you seen my wallet? I thought we can get some breakfast before I go into work." She stepped out the bathroom and opened the drawer beside their bed. "Ah thank you! Don't know what I'd do without you," he said with a laugh. He walked over to her, knowing the reason she was so upset.

"Don't," she whispered, already knowing what he was about to say.

"Pumpkin, it's gonna take a while, so just wait, yeah? How about we go back to the doctors in a month if nothing happens by then, yeah?" He kissed the top of her head and she looked up. "I love you, baby or no baby, okay? You need to understand that. Don't think I'm gonna leave you because we can't have a baby together. Don't ever think that."

She nodded her head before wrapping her arms around him. "I love you too."

"Good. Because I really want to take you out for breakfast. So put your coat on and let's go. I'm losing time already."

Truck 54, Squad 5, fire in orphanage, kids still inside.

Nathan jumped up along with the other firefighters. They quickly got into the truck and began making their way out the firehouse. Nathan wiped the black soot away from his cheek. They had just come out of a fire half an hour ago.

Before seeing the orphanage, he knew it was a bad fire, looking at the clouds of black smoke. "Asher, Carr, you're with me. Jess and Mo, vent the roof and Tony, I want you on the ladder, trying to get onto that top floor."

All the firefighters rushed to their positions. "You've got five minutes, Carter," he heard his chief shout.

Five minutes to save all the kids, he thought to himself. Without another second wasted, they all stormed into the building. Esposito and his men were in front of him, taking the right. With caution, Nathan took the first step on the staircase before rushing up the others.

"Clear down here!" he heard Esposito shout. The stomping of feet told him that they were now upstairs. "Spread out. Dawson and Jenkins, start the right."

Nathan kicked down the first door. "Fire department, call out!" He scanned the empty room, looking under the bed before calling it clear and moving to the next one. Seeing as all the firefighters had attended to each of the remaining doors, he rushed up the next flight of stairs, to find one bedroom. But it was locked. The heavy door closed behind him and he blinked to clear his vision.

He leaned into his walkie talkie. "Tony how we doing with the ladder?" He kicked the door twice, but nothing happened.

"Front face window, lieutenant!"

"That's the one." Suddenly, he heard a cry. It didn't sound like a toddler but a baby. He looked at the lock again and felt the heat rising, this time from his anger. It wasn't a normal lock but a heavy one that wasn't meant to be opened. He heard the baby cry again. "Hurry up, Tony!" He lifted his metal bar and banged it against the lock. Esposito ran up to him and groaned.

"I'm doing my best Lieutenants, there were bars on the outside."

"Fuck! Look at the lock, Carter, it's intentional."

"You've got two minutes!" the chief said. "Tony is breaking the window now as we speak."

Neither of the men replied as they were too busy trying to break the lock. Finally, when the lock dropped to the ground, battered with their beatings, they charged into the room but nothing could have prepared them for what they saw.

A group of kids were gathered in a corner, all slumped to the ground. Most newborns were in cots, already burned severely. Nathan quickly checked the kids pulse and sighed with relief when all of them had a pulse. However, the new borns didn't. Esposito and Tony worked on getting them down the ladder, full of firefighters, ready to pass along the children. Nathan picked up the newborn baby who seemed to be crying and passed him along to Tony, who then passed it onto the next firefighter waiting with their arms open.

"We've got the kids, we need to go. There's no one else here alive," Esposito said. Nathan tried to move but he couldn't. His eyes stayed glued to the children who had no pulse, their flesh burnt. "We need to go!" Esposito dragged Nathan to the window and they both got out just as the floor collapsed.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm sorry."

Andy rushed through the crowd. She had struggled to get through with her car so she had to park it and run the rest. She saw the news reporters talking quickly through their microphone.

"Sorry," she kept repeating as she pushed people with her elbow. When she got to the line, she stopped and froze. Not once did she ever the firefighters of firehouse 87 this distraught. "Nathan!" Nathan patted Asher's back before letting go of the hug. He looked up to Andy and ran to her. She quickly ducked under the tape, ignoring the police officers screams.

"I got you," she whispered once Nathan had wrapped his arms tightly around her. "Shh, I got you." Nathan continued to sob into her neck as she ran her fingers through his hair. No matter what she said, he sobbed even harder.

Several minutes passed as he held onto her tightly, gripping her light jacket she had worn to breakfast. Once he had stopped crying, he loosened his grip on her and pulled his head back. Andy wiped away his tears, leaving her hands to rest on his cheeks. He sniffed twice before raising a hand to hers and turning his head to kiss the inside of her palm.

"I'm sorry I called you from work."

"Don't be stupid." She pulled him into a hug, hearing him sigh. "I'll always be here for you, always."

Nathan nodded his head before stepping back. He felt his muscles loosen as he looked down at her. His heart beat echoed in his ears as he leaned in closer. "I love you," he whispered.

"I love you too," she said before meeting his lips. Even though he had stopped crying, she felt his lips quiver every few seconds into the kiss. "I'm so proud of you. I'm so, so proud of you and firehouse 87, you know that?"

"Carter!" he heard the chief shout from down the road. Nathan wiped away his eyes before pecking her lips and leaving.

"Andy?" Jess said from behind her. She was about to go and hug her when Carr came up beside her.

"Andy please just make sure she's okay. I have to go and make sure the fire is all out." Andy nodded her head before opening her arms out to Jess. Carr sighed as he looked at Jessica sobbing in Andy's arm before running back to the firefighters.

"Miss, can you report on anything from inside?" a news reporter asked Andy as she walked to the burnt building. She had a large box of water bottles in her hands that she had got for the firefighters.

"It's Mrs, actually," she pointed out politely.

"You are lieutenant Carter's wife?"

"I am." The woman forced a smile as she neared. When Andy looked closely she realised it was the reporter everyone hated. She didn't mind answering questions for news channels who were simply reporting the issue but the woman, dressed in a navy dress, was only in for the gossip.

"Can you please tell us anything?"

Andy glanced at the firefighters who were slumped against a tree. "I can tell you that they have been working very hard and still are. These men and women are people we should be proud of. That's all I can say. I've no knowledge about the fire, about the casualties or anything relating to what you need to know. All I am here for is to support my husband and be there for him alongside his men and women. So if you don't mind, stop trying to suss out the gossip and give them some peace and quiet to carry out their job." She glanced at the glare of the reporter as she ducked under the tape. Nathan took the box off her and gave her a soft smile.

"I always love it when you throw them attitude." He set the box down on the floor before handing a bottle out to everyone. "You should have called me from your car, I would have carried it."

"I need to go back and get some food. Just got some fruits and sandwiches. The man gave them for free once he knew I was getting it for you guys." Andy walked back to her car with Nathan beside her. He reached out for her hand, giving it a soft squeeze.

"I don't think I've ever thanked you enough. Not only for being there for me, but being there for my men and women."

"It's okay-"

"Don't. You go above and beyond to make other people feel good and I just-" Nathan shook his head with a laugh. "Not once did I ever think I was going to have someone this special. But I got really lucky and I got you. The greatest person ever."

"You're not the only one that got lucky."

"Doubt you got lucky, pumpkin. Being my wife was enough, you didn't have to stop by the firehouse all the time and spend time with everyone and cook for us and invite them to our house. Like I said, you always go above and beyond."

Andy didn't reply. She knew there was nothing to say at that moment. She unlocked her car and Nathan opened the boot, taking out a large box.
