Soobin tapped his foot as he waited in the doorway, the cool air nipping at him.
The sky was dark, although Soobin had no idea what time it was. He glanced through the window of the cafe he stood in front of, seeing a familiar boy talking to a cashier inside.
Yeonjun and Soobin had spent the last few hours at the cafe, chatting about this and that as the hours flew by. Soobin had gone outside first, as Yeonjun had insisted to be the one to pay for their drinks.
Soobin crossed his arms, growing increasingly uncomfortable with the temperature. It had been getting colder recently, and along with the night sky came a chilling wind that seemed to taunt him with every movement.
The doors chimed after a few minutes.
"Sorry I took so long, their machine wouldn't take my card," Yeonjun explained as he stepped out of the cafe.
"You ready to leave?"
Soobin nodded, hurrying to walk alongside Yeonjun as they began to journey down the sidewalk.
"Are we trying to make this a tradition?" Soobin joked. "We've gotten drinks three days in a row."
Yeonjun only laughed at the comment.
"It would be nice. By the end of the year we'll have tried every place in town."
Soobin smiled at this, despite subtly tugging the sleeves of his t-shirt down. He glanced at cars as they passed by, noticing how the moonlight reflected off of them.
"You okay?" Yeonjun asked, grabbing all of Soobin's attention.
"What?" Soobin muttered, his brain lagging for a moment. He instantly realized how he was walking, arms huddled in towards himself as to ignore the cold.
"Oh, I'm fine. It's just cold out here," Soobin dismissed, seeing the concern on Yeonjun's face.
"You need this? Here—" Yeonjun began, immediately beginning to pull off his own hoodie.
"Jun, it's okay! You don't have to..." Soobin trailed off as the other boy pulled the garment over his head, leaving him in the black tank top he wore underneath.
"Take it, I don't get cold easily. I just like hoodies," the elder admitted, holding the item out to the taller boy.
Soobin almost refused, yet his own brain yelled at him to accept the offer.
He grabbed the hoodie from the other, his eyes lingering just a bit too long on Yeonjun's exposed arms.
"You sure?" Soobin said as he began to pull the hoodie on over his head.
Yeonjun nodded, fixing his own hair which had been messed up when taking the garment off.
Soobin breathed a sigh of relief as the fabric embraced him, still warm from being worn by the other. He subconsciously snuggled into the hoodie, having expected its sweet scent by now.
'You smell way too much like him.'
The words of the boy from earlier echoed in Soobin's head. He still had no idea what that comment had meant.
Something inside seemed convinced that the "him" in question was the boy right next to him, who looked up at the sky as they strolled.
A flash of light startled the hell out of Soobin, who turned to see Yeonjun holding up his phone towards him.
"Did you just—" Soobin spoke, seeing Yeonjun snickering to himself as he looked at his phone screen.
"Hey, delete thattt," Soobin whined as he caught sight of the picture of him on the elder's phone.
"Whyyy? You look cute," Yeonjun joked, shutting the younger up instantly.
Soobin huffed, grabbing onto Yeonjun's arm as they walked just to be annoying.
Yeonjun glanced at the other with a playful smile.
"You still cold or something?" he asked, instantly making Soobin realize how his gesture could be interpreted.
"Umm, a little bit," Soobin blatantly lied.
Yeonjun nodded, pulling his arm away from Soobin's grip and wrapping it around his shoulders instead.
"Damn... you are really warm," Soobin muttered automatically, seeing Yeonjun laugh at the comment.
"Told you. My friends come over to cuddle me a lot, they say it's nice," Yeonjun said offhandedly.
Soobin felt a strange twinge of jealousy at the words. He was one of his friends now; why couldn't he have that too?
"That sounds nice..." Soobin trailed off, trying his hardest to drop a hint with his tone. "None of my friends would do that with me," he spoke, glancing at Yeonjun.
The pair held eye contact for a second, both holding back their words.
"My house is only a couple minutes from here," Yeonjun commented. "I'm down for it if you are."
Soobin blinked, surprised at the other's momentary boldness.
"Why not?" he said, trying to act as if he wasn't absolutely shaking internally.
Sure enough, Yeonjun wasn't lying. Within mere minutes the two approached the door to a small house, with Yeonjun digging a pair of keys out of his pocket.
"Don't mind the darkness, Mom works the night shift so she's not home right now," Yeonjun spoke as he unlocked and swung the door open, feeling around for the light switch as he stepped inside.
Soobin followed after him, slipping off his shoes after closing the door behind him.
The bright lights suddenly illuminated the house, causing Soobin to wince as his eyes adjusted.
Yeonjun wasted no time in gesturing for Soobin to follow him down the hall, not waiting for the younger to recover fully from the shock of the light.
"My room's over here," the boy spoke, striding down the hall and around the corner with Soobin following behind him.
Yeonjun excitedly pushed open the door to his room, extending a hand towards it as if presenting the entrance to the other boy.
Soobin took the signal and stepped inside, treading lightly as he took in his new surroundings.
"Oh my god..." Soobin couldn't help but say as he looked in amazement.
Soobin thought the room was adorable. Twinkling fairy lights adorned the wall over a large bed absolutely overcrowded by pillows and stuffed animals.
A plush white rug laid on the floor, the perfect accent to the large beanbag chairs which sat invitingly in the corner.
Soobin ran over to the beanbag chairs without a thought, flopping down into one and marveling at its comfortable embrace.
Yeonjun softly shut the door as he smiled at the younger's behavior. "You like those?" he asked as he strolled over to Soobin.
"Yeah, I haven't seen one of these in years," Soobin replied, squeezing the bean bag with his hands.
"Move," Yeonjun told him, kneeling down as to crawl onto the beanbag. Soobin stared at him as if he were crazy.
"You came here to cuddle. Move over," Yeonjun reminded, snapping Soobin back to reality.
He shifted over as to make space for Yeonjun as he laid down on the squishy beanbag across from the younger boy.
Soobin tensed up as he came face to face with Yeonjun, who laid a hand on Soobin's waist as if to adjust him to being touched.
Yeonjun gently reached up, brushing the hair out of Soobin's face.
"You wanna talk about something or just...?" he spoke quietly.
Soobin was almost terrified of how relaxed he suddenly felt, Yeonjun's touch calming him with every movement.
"Sure," Soobin mumbled, feeling Yeonjun move his hand to cup the back of his head.
He pulled Soobin towards himself, resting his chin on top of his head and holding his waist tightly. Soobin instinctively wrapped an arm around Yeonjun's back as he snuggled up to him, his breathing slowed.
"What's a good topic? Hmm..." Yeonjun murmured, absentmindedly stroking the younger's hair with his thumb.
"Your mom works the night shift?" Soobin mentioned, remembering what Yeonjun had said.
"Yeah. It gets kinda lonely here at night so I usually just go out with my friends," he admitted.
Soobin subconsciously shifted closer to the elder, his warmth too tempting to pass up the chance. Their legs became tangled as the pair pressed up against each other, with Soobin burying his head in the crook of Yeonjun's neck.
"Your mom nice?" Soobin asked, closing his eyes out of comfort.
"Mhm. I love her, but..." Yeonjun trailed off, seemingly hesitant to continue.
"I get it. Mine can be kinda distant," Soobin said, fidgeting with the cloth of Yeonjun's tank top.
"We used to be really close, but... I got older, I guess."
Yeonjun nodded lightly in understanding, letting Soobin continue talking.
"It sounds dumb but, when I was little, if we fought she always brought me a bowl of strawberries afterwards," Soobin spoke, letting out a soft laugh at the memory.
"I guess it was her way of showing love?"
Yeonjun smiled at this. "That's cute," he said. "If my dad came to visit he would always bring me those donut holes. I kinda miss them."
'I'm gonna buy him some.'
Soobin immediately thought. He knew a shop that sold them nearby, and his resolve was instantly set to do so.
"I kinda wish I was still younger, sometimes," Yeonjun sighed, unknowingly driving Soobin crazy as he continued petting his head.
"Why's that?" Soobin inquired, his voice softer as he felt himself relax.
"Dunno," Yeonjun murmured, twirling a lock of the younger's hair between his fingers. "I was happy back then, I guess."
Soobin felt a little sad at the statement.
"You're not happy now?"
he asked.
Yeonjun paused for a moment, thinking over something.
"Right now? Yeah, I'm happy," he stated, subtly tightening his hold around the other's waist.
Soobin felt a bit flushed at this, although his logical side told him he was taking the comment too seriously.
"That's good. If you need to vent, I'm here," Soobin offered, tapping his fingers in a rhythm against Yeonjun's back.
Yeonjun hummed in understanding.
"I'll keep that in mind," he stated, closing his eyes.
The pair laid in silence for a long while, both preoccupied by their own thoughts despite being held in each other's arms.
"Jun?" Soobin whispered eventually, just to test it.
No response came, and based on the other boy's peaceful breathing, Soobin didn't even have to see his face to know he'd fallen asleep.
Soobin smiled to himself at this, feeling just a small bit of pride that the elder was comfortable enough with him to sleep there.
"Night dork," Soobin muttered, shutting his eyes as he fully accepted he wouldn't be returning home that night.
If only Soobin knew what would come of his choices.
