Safety

I break the surface of the water, gasping for breath. I quickly grab a plank of wood to keep myself afloat. I keep Steven's unconscious body next to me. I look around left and right. The city is gone. The temple is gone.

Or at least the entrance anyway. I don't want to know what has happened to the barn. I feel faint from my battle with Steven, Ruby, and Sapphire. I fought all three and I nearly annihilated them.

I can still see myself punching Steven left and right. Steven. I backstabbed him to save my own life and Lapis. I defended Jasper. Am I really this bad? I don't know anymore. But I do know one thing.

I'm suffering at the hands of Eloc. Wherever he goes, I go. Whatever he sees, I see. Right now, I see myself slipping off the board. "You know you want it." I look around. I feel something grab onto me.

"Just let it all go. No one needs to know about any of this. We can die with our secrets together!" And just like that, I let go. I drop beneath the surface of the water. Steven's body stays afloat back on the surface.

But Lapis, Ruby, and Sapphire's gems are still in my pockets. "Now then, close your eyes...and say good night." I close my eyes. Suddenly, random visions pop up. I see myself fighting a holographic entity.

I see Eyeball fighting something that I can't see. I see a hand reaching out to grab me. I can see myself kissing Eyeball. And then, I see Eloc in her place. I gasp and I open my eyes. I cover my mouth and I try to swim towards the surface.

"Amethyst!" A voice yells out from above. However, underwater, it's barely audible. I try to break the surface, but I realize that my heavy clothes keep pushing me down. And I'm really exhausted right now.

I'm getting tired. I feel weak and dead inside. But I still want at least a little more fresh air. I slide off the coat before taking off the shoes and gloves that I retrieved from the lake a couple days ago. Letting them go again would mean that they aren't coming back.

Or will they? I don't know. Once I do, I break the surface and choke out some water. I see Peridot on a boat. She looks over at me and she gasps. "AMETHYST!" She reaches out to me. "Take my hand!"

I take her hand and I get on board. But as I do, I notice something slipping off of the wooden plank. I turn around as I get on and I gasp. "STEVEN!" The body slips beneath the surface, never to be seen again.

I try to break out of Peridot's grip, but she doesn't let go. I can't fight her anymore than I want to. "He's gone, Amethyst! Calm down!" I scream as I imagine Steven slowly drowning in his own blood. I killed him.

Never before have I screamed while sobbing. This is the loudest tantrum I've ever had. I want to hurt Peridot for stopping me. I want to save him. But that plank could only support one of us.

Once I'm on the boat, Peridot still holds me back. "Calm down! He's not coming back!"
"I CAN SAVE HIM!"
"NO YOU CAN'T! STOP FIGHTING ME!" I then punch Peridot right across the face. She winces. But she doesn't let go.

I gasp as I notice her black eye. I keep fighting her until she really starts pinning me down. "I'm not holding back anymore! I will never hold back for anyone anymore!" She keeps me pinned down on the boat.
