Pearl never really felt the need to fuse with anyone besides Rose, except in life or death emergencies, but this time was an exception. Amethyst had been so quiet for the last few days that Pearl felt like the only way to understand was to fuse. Amethyst hardly put up a fight when Pearl asked to fuse. Things only kept getting stranger. It was always Amethyst who seemed to know when to fuse, but now it was Pearl. It was always Pearl who needed cheering up, but here they were.
Amethyst was never this quiet when they fused. Pearl was always the leading one, but there was always Amethyst urging and guiding her in the back of her mind. It wasn't even any solid proof, but Pearl felt like something was wrong. They were fused, and Amethyst knew that Pearl knew that her knew.
"Are you okay?" Pearl asked. It wasn't necessary to say it out loud, but it was just a habit. Both of them knew what their answers would be and what their questions were before they were even asked. Just a habit, nothing else.
Their fusion was silent for a moment, just sitting on the tall spires of cascading waterfalls. Pearl could tell that Amethyst was trying to keep her mind off of the question.
"Why do you ask?" Opal's Amethyst half asked. For a moment there was nothing but the constant distant roaring of crashing water. It completely defied the law of physics.
"You've been quiet." it hardly a whisper, but it didn't matter how loud it was. They were fused, and they didn't need words to know what the other person was going to say.
"Isn't that a good thing?" Amethyst asked. Pearl didn't know if she said it out loud or not, but she heard it.
"It's not like you. It's worrying me. All of us." Opal nodded. It was Amethyst.
"Yeah, I guess so," Opal leaned back and sighed, "It's just that... everyone seems to say that I'm a defect. And it's okay, because it's how I am it's just..." the last sentence was blurted out in reassurance.
"You aren't de-"
"Yes I am. And it's okay to be defected! It's just a part of who I am!" Amethyst was feeling frustrated, and Pearl immediately regretted trying to reassure her in the way she did. "Everyone acts like being defected is bad, and it is a little. Everyone says that I'm not defected, but I am and that's okay." Opal scooted closer to the edge of the waterfall.
Both of them were quiet for a moment. Amethyst regretted getting so angry at Pearl, and Pearl regretted denying that Amethyst was a defect.
"So what do you want?" Pearl asked. Amethyst took a moment to think. Not many people asked this question enough, and when someone finally did, Amethyst had no answer.
"I just want people to... treat me like I'm not a runt. I just want to be equal to everyone." Opal started to fidget with her fingers.
"You are equal."
"I know. It's just, like, I wish I knew it."
