"honestly, peridot, i don't understand why you're so excited. we go out to eat all the time." lapis talked over her shoulder as she slipped into a deep blue colored jacket. peridot had insisted that lapis dressed up today to go out to dinner. peridot didn't own anything really nice to wear, but she was wearing a bow tie with tiny aliens patterning it.
"don't worry! this is gonna be a fun night!" peridot patiently waited for her girlfriend to finish buttoning up her coat before opening the door for her. lapis glanced at her with mock suspicion.
"you're acting very polite tonight." lapis commented. peridot only smiled wider. the air was pleasantly cool and dried leaves were swept into the air. lapis offered to give peridot a piggy back ride, and peridot quickly climbed onto her back. since they didn't have a car, lapis's flying was their main mode of transportation. "so where are we going?"
"empire city!" peridot said with a bit too much enthusiasm. lapis turned her head.
"empire city? i thought we were going to the pizza place or something. that's what we always do for dinner." peridot only smiled, and lapis could do nothing but take off and fly in the direction of empire city. not too long after that, the dim glow of empire city's lights were visible from under the thin clouds.
as peridot instructed lapis where to land, and lapis looked around at the crowded street full of busy taxi drivers. the building in front of them was a tall structure that looked like a fancy hotel, but it said in fancy lettering "The Silver Dream".
"this is the place? are you sure we're at the right spot?" lapis asked. peridot quickly shot her a smug look and proudly strutted into the restaurant. inside was a waiting line and a large room full of evenly spaced out tables covered with smooth, spotless table clothes. the silver cutlery caught in the light of a chandelier that was made of the same material. the wine glasses that were set up at every table had thin flakes of silver suspended in the glass.
lapis was completely frozen for a moment. The Silver Dream was fancier than any building that she had been in on Earth. compared to the various chinese food, pizza places, and fast food places that lapis and peridot were used to, this was a huge jump.
peridot gently took lapis's hand and led her to the front of the waiting line. a man was waiting for them in a black suit.
"do you two have a registration?" he asked with a wary look to both of them.
"a table for two for miss and miss gemstone." lapis squeezed peridot's hand, still amazed by the fact that peridot was able to take them to such a nice place. a thought occurred to her. how did peridot manage to afford this place?
the man quickly seated them at a table, and lapis felt uncomfortable in such a nice restaurant. she felt wildly out of place, and the number of forks that were on the table for just two people was absolutely ridiculous.
"how did you afford a registration here?" lapis asked under her breath. everyone else around them was also muttering, like no one was allowed to talk normally.
"would you believe me if i said i hacked into the system?" peridot asked with a shy look.
"no."
"well it was worth a shot. i got a job at an auto shop six months ago, and i've been saving up for this dinner." peridot absentmindedly bent one of the forks with her metal powers, like it was nothing special.
"six months?" lapis asked, staring around the room. the silver aesthetic sent light scattering in a million directions.
"yeah. i thought it would take longer, but for some reason i was extremely good at fixing cars." peridot bent the silver spoon back with her power.
peridot ordered something called the "royal ossetra caviar" and lapis ordered the first things that she saw on the menu, which was the "salad of flowering quince".
"so how did you get this idea, peridot? we never really talked about this kind of thing." lapis was gently stirring her glass of wine. they didn't really drink, but the color of wine was nice.
"well, i was thinking about getting a job anyways, maybe to buy more pizza. i got the job after thinking for a while since i'm still learning about my metal powers that i should get a job that would help me improve those skills. but after i got the job, i got a promotion, and i started to get more and more money. and i just decided," peridot shrugged, "well i try to be nice to you and all, but i can't really ever spend money on you. so it might be nice to surprise you with something nice once and a while."
lapis was silent for a few moments. peridot was always trying her best to be a good girlfriend, and she always seemed to be a step ahead of lapis. she treated lapis like she was the light of her life and was always making sure that she was safe. lapis, of course, tried to be a good girlfriend as well, but peridot was always so thoughtful.
their food arrived and they ate in comfortable silence. the food was certainly higher quality than what they usually ate, but lapis wouldn't call it better. the food was more expensive and probably better to eat, but the pizza that they ate every other day was made by people they loved and cared for, and more often than not, they gave the couple a discount. still lapis could get used to eating like this.
after peridot finished a chocolate lava cake before lapis could comment on the tiny adorable cake. peridot made a show of using the fancy folded napkin to wipe the melted chocolate off of her face.
"so was this nice?" peridot asked, nervously twisting the napkin. lapis looked up with a soft smile.
"you're such a dork. i love you so much." she gently leaned forward and gently kissed peridot, right above her right eye. peridot blushed.
"do you want to go home and take a nap?"
"i want nothing more."
