"Really! Are you serious!" Steven hopped from foot to foot, shaking his hands nervously, with a huge smile on his face. Lapis sighed with a hopeful look on her face. There was a lot in their lives that were happening, but they had planned this for a long time, years even.
"Yeah, actually we've been planning this for a year or so." Lapis said with a casual shrug, hands in her loose jeans. Peridot was a little more tense about things, almost as much as Steven was. Even after a year's worth of planning, Peridot was still unsure. Lapis was confident that they would be able to bring this plan to life.
"So I'm going to be an uncle?" Steven asked, holding onto Peridot and Lapis's hands.
"Actually they'll be your cousin, since Pearl and Amethyst are pretty much our sisters."
"Will Garnet be your baby's cool aunt, too?" Steven was completely ecstatic over the news. Garnet chuckled, ruffling Steven's hair.
"I'm always going to be the cool aunt. Even when you're an adult." The entire family was supportive of their plan, maybe more than they were.
"We'll just need a few days so we can sort out what will happen. We still haven't signed the papers yet." Steven nodded, and squeezed both of their hands.
-
"Are you sure about this?" Peridot asked. Lapis sighed. She lost count of how many times Peridot had asked this question. She was always so unsure about her plans, but Lapis had a mindset on this. Peridot was always talking about how she wanted children and she always had dreams and plans.
"Don't worry about me, Peridot. Really, you've talked about this so much." Lapis nodded, leaning back on their couch. The place that they lived on was more of an apartment built into the barn. They had lived here since they fled as a couple (and refugees) from their home countries, and Steven's moms brought them in as a host family. The house was always a little bit of a mess, with piles of random items that they found interesting (Peridot was still amazed about toilets), but honestly Lapis was more interested in water. In the hot Middle Eastern countries, water was always a resource. Here, it was everywhere. It was hard to wrap her head around.
"Okay. So do you want right now?" Peridot asked. Lapis looked at the clock. It was only 3:22 PM.
"Sure."
When they arrived at the orphanage, choosing a child became much more difficult than they had imagined. There were classrooms inside the building, bedrooms, kitchens, and a library. There was a little more than three hundred children under the age of eighteen years old.
A guild led them around, naming children that ran around the orphanage, happy and squealing. Lapis always had this idea in her mind that she would see a child, and immediately know that they were the one. Now, she wasn't so sure that plan was going to work. There were so many children, so different and yet so alike to the child that Lapis had in mind.
Peridot held onto Lapis's hand like her life depended on it. They didn't speak when they saw a new child. They knew when they would see the one, they didn't need to talk until then.
After an hour, the guide got tired and left them on their own. Peridot had a feeling that the child that they were looking for would be in the library. Lapis thought that, too. They wanted a child that would smart like Peridot, and quiet, like her other mother.
The library was mostly empty besides an elderly woman who sat behind a desk in a rocking chair. She smiled when she saw the young couple.
"Are you looking for a book?" she asked.
"A kid, actually." Lapis corrected. The old lady laughed.
"Yeah, you weren't going to find a kid with one of those guides. They're just professional. They don't really know any of the kids." she sighed, leaning back in the rocking chair. Peridot looked extremely interested in this old, happy woman. "So what type of kid are you looking for? Maybe I can help you."
"Um." Lapis had thought of this, but now that someone asked them, the words were gone.
"Smart." Peridot blurted. Lapis nodded.
"Creative."
"Maybe shy?"
"Happy."
"Quiet."
The old lady laughed, getting up from her rocking chair. "I know who you're talking about."
Lapis looked at Peridot with a hopeful look. Was there a kid that was here that? The old grandma shuffled away into the maze of bookshelf. Lapis and Peridot tailed her, hearts pounding.
The little girl was sitting on the floor, holding a thick book in her lap. Lapis was staring at the huge book in her hands.
"This is Sammy. Sammy this is..." the old lady gave a look at the couple.
"Lapis."
"Peridot."
"Sammy this is Lapis and Peridot." Sammy looked up, nodding. She couldn't be older than three of four.
"What are you reading, Sammy?" Peridot asked. Sammy shrugged, and closed the book. She put it to the side.
"I don't know. I just like looking at the words. It looks nice." The old lady smiled at her, laughing. The girl was short, chubby, and had tan skin with freckles that sprinkled her cheeks. Her hair was short and curly.
"So what do you think about Lapis and Peridot?"
"Rocks. They're names are rocks, right? Rocks are nice."
"Yeah. We're named after rocks. Do you know what color the rocks are?"
"I don't remember."
"Blue." Lapis said.
"Green." Peridot said. The old lady nodded, looking at the three of them.
"So would you be happy if Peridot and Lapis were your moms?" Sammy looked surprised.
"Two moms? That's twice the number of moms." The old lady nodded, amused by Sammy. "So I'll have twice the number of moms?"
"If you want?"
The papers were signed and Sammy was adopted before the sun set.
