Truth or dare was a brutal game, especially between them. Peridot was amazingly creative, but lacked bravery in everyday situations. Lapis didn't mind doing a great deal of things, but she did have a past that Peridot was always eager to get to know and understand.
So far Lapis had to try make a new instrument out of an adult magazine, five paper clips, and a telephone wire. She had failed that one, to say the least. Peridot had to catch five random insects, and started crying when she realized that one of the insects that she was holding was a spider.
The game was a way to pass the time when there weren't any looming threats of death. It was a sort of a way to reconnect with each other after near death experiences, a way to ground themselves into the reality that they were living at the moment. A way to remember that their entire lives didn't have to revolve around Homeworld, and sometimes the biggest challenge in their lives could just be trying to fit their entire bodies into a shoebox (surprisingly, Peridot can)
The day was getting late and the pauses between their dialogue were filled with night sounds of owls and crickets.
"What do you regret most in life?" Peridot asked. Lapis was quiet for a while.
"There's a lot of things that I regret. There's coming to earth so long ago, that got me trapped in a mirror. There's going back to Homeworld. There's trapping Jasper. There's all of that. But those were necessary." The list seemed to drag Lapis down. Peridot couldn't imagine just being torn apart like that, every corner being another trap, another horrible thing waiting.
"Why were they necessary?" Peridot asked. They didn't seem that way.
"I needed to come to earth to become trapped here and meet Steven. I needed to go to Homeworld to warn the Crystal gems. Jasper," Lapis took a deep breath, "Jasper needed to be stopped." She sounded a lot more regretful than proud of what she did.
The two of them sat there, listening to wind rustling grass and tree leaves.
"Do you wish you could do anything different?"
"No," Lapis answered immediately. "Well, I do. But I know I wouldn't be the same person. I wouldn't be here in the same way that I'm here right now. I don't want that."
There was another pause as the two of them thought of what Lapis just said. Suffering, and not wanting it to go away, or wanting to change it.
"I love you."
"Love you, too."
