Peridot woke up to the ground underneath her shifting around uncomfortably. At first she tried to ignore it, telling herself it was just the ship having some turbulence.
Then she realized that she no longer worked for the Homeworld. She opened her eyes, and the blurriness took too long to disappear. The ground wasn't moving. The person she had been sleeping on was, though. It didn't process in her mind that it still was dark in the barn, and she spent several moments waiting for her eyesight to focus, but it didn't. It was still dark, and only the outlines of objects remained. Nothing seemed to be alive.
"Lapis? Wake up." Peridot gently shook her shoulder. Lapis just shrugged her off. Peridot sighed, rubbing her eyes. When she looked back at Lapis again she looked...pained.
"Lapis, wake up. You're having a nightmare." Peridot tried to gently shake her, but Lapis quickly lashed out, her arm just barely missing Peridot's face. Lapis's entire body seemed to be getting smaller and smaller, and she was curled up in a tight, painful ball.
"Lapis? Lapis!" Peridot felt wildly out of control as Lapis didn't have any physical reaction to her voice besides looking like she was being shattered.
"Wake up! Lapis!" Peridot thought quickly, and grabbed both of Lapis's shoulders and violently shook her. It still took a moment for Lapis to wake up, but it was a flooding relief. Peridot gently lowered Lapis back down onto their bed. She looked, oddly enough, like she knew everything that just happened.
She looked scared.
"Are...Are you okay?" Peridot asked. Lapis stood still for a moment, playing with the blanket underneath her, and slowly nodded. There was a blank look to her eyes that urged Peridot to help her. This didn't happen often, but when it did, it was bad. The nightmares that Lapis had were easy to guess what they were about, but the details remained vague. Lapis often went completely silent for a day or two after having a nightmare about Homeworld and Jasper.
"Yeah." Her voice sounded strained and tired. "Yeah, I'm fine."
The two of them sat on the bed, barely seeing each other in the faint amount of moonlight that managed to get into the barn by the hole in the roof. All that seemed to exist was them, and the crushing silence.
"What was it about?" The question seemed so out of place in this silent, dark world. A glimmer of hope, maybe. A gesture of help. Peridot wasn't expecting much of an answer. Whenever she asked the question, Lapis would brush it off and tell her the bare minimum to get by.
But today she didn't.
"I was trapped." Lapis started off, surprising Peridot. She never told her that part, although Peridot guessed that it was likely one of the causes to her nightmares. "It was dark, and I couldn't move." The words started to spill out, one word leading to the next and then all of a sudden she was panicking and almost yelling. "I had this feeling that something bad was going to happen, something really really bad, and I was trying to get away but I couldn't. And-And then I just kinda...woke up..."
Although it sounded stupid to Lapis, the way she said it made Peridot's heart race. She was so panicked and afraid that the vague description was more than enough for her.
"I know it sounds weird."
"It's okay. Nightmares don't really make sense. Steven told us that, didn't he?" Peridot could faintly see Lapis nodding in agreement.
"They still scare me."
"And that's okay. He said that they didn't make sense, not that they're not scary. It's fine to be scared of this." Peridot took a long pause. "Do you want to go back to sleep? I'll stick close to you."
"That sounds nice."
