The night was bright and joyful, and Rose's laughter echoed through the cave melodiously. When she laughed, her eyes would close and crinkle up and her lips would part in a wide smile. Amethyst was sitting beside her on the edge of the warp pad, grinning with the feat of making her beloved Rose laugh.
Amethyst raised her head to look to Rose, who beamed down at her and ruffled her hand through Amethyt's short hair. Amethyst ducked her head shyly, giggling a bit as she snuggled closer to the large pink-haired woman. She closed her eyes and Rose's laughter subsided and shifted into gentle hums. Amethyst could feel her heart lighten at these sounds and she was becoming slowly lulled into slumber.
But her rest was interrupted by the abrupt crashing of waves against the sand. Amethyst gasped and her eyes flew open. Her heart was pounding and her breathing was quick as she examined her surroundings. She was back in the present, sitting with her legs drawn up to her chest on the shore. The hungry waves were lapping at her toes and soaking her bottom, but Amethyst barely notices.
She groans and bows her head, pressing her forehead against her knees and squeezing her eyes shut to trap her tears. She quickly realized that that little moment of bliss was all just a memory, and knowing this made her heart ache. Why did she torture herself like this? It only hurt to think of Rose, whom she still loved after so long.
Amethyst could still recall her voluminous pink curls and her curvy figure; her rosy cheeks and her beautiful laughter and stunning smile; the way she was so serious and mature, and yet her laugh was still so young and hopeful; the way she could lead an army into battle and achieve victory against all odds.
Amethyst released a soft sigh, opening her eyes and raising her head to gaze at the stars twinkling in the jet sky. She took a deep breath in attempt to soothe the water that was threatening to spill over her cheeks. But then she thought of Rose's arms around her like the used to be, and she let out a choked sob. Fat tears dripped off her chin and her nose and dropped onto her legs or on the sand she sat on. Amethyst quickly raised a hand to wipe them away, but she soon gave up when they just kept coming.
She longed to nestle close to Rose once more, to complain and cry and joke and sing. Amethyt's envied Pearl with her hologram conjuring abilities. Amethyst knew that when she was alone, Pearl would summon a hologram Rose and talk to her. Sometimes Amethyst could hear Pearl's voice echo softly down through her waterfalls and reverberate on the walls of Amethyst's cave. On those nights, Amethyst would sleep on a mattress with a pillow over her head so she couldn't hear her.
Amethyst laid back in the sand with her arms fanned out and stared up at the night sky. The stars up there reminded her of Rose's eyes, and the way her rare tears would sparkle like she was weeping cosmos. Even the way she cried was captivating. Amethyst idolized everything Rose did and hung onto every word she spoke, even now when Rose had been gone for so long. Not a day went by when Amethyst didn't think of Rose, but there were some days where it didn't hurt as much to remember.
Amethyst blinked as a star shot across the night sky. She sighed and closed her eyes once more, blocking out the stars above. Amethyst relaxed and allowed sleep to consume her.
At least in her dreams, Rose was still smiling.
