The Longest Time Ago ~ Crystal Gems x Reader ~ Finale (Pt 2)

That wasn't all (Y/n) had found in the drawer, after digging some more on the other side of the bed, she discovered a small piece of paper tied to what looked like a recorder, one of the childish plastic instruments that kids play to be cool. She blew into it lightly as a melodic tune filled her ears, reminding her more of a whistle than a recorder.

(Y/n) left almost immediately without a single word to anyone else. She left her comforting home to follow the picture she'd discovered tied to the plastic. A map. That's what it was, a map of Beach City with a mark indicating the cliff with the abandoned lighthouse.

(Y/n) never visited that area of the beach, nor did she know that around the corner was an old abandoned house. Old was definitely a way to call it but it looked fairly new to the eye. The sand was rather even, meaning that she was probably the first person to enter the area for quite some time.

(Y/n) made her way up the wooden steps, ignoring the loud and obnoxious creaking that emitted as she stepped, the girl made her way to the entrance of the house. A couple cobwebs lingered, abandoned by their owners and a fly screen with a rusty door knob was all that stood in her way. She twisted the metal, forcing a couple of times before breaking the lock that sealed it shut with ease.

The lights worked, a flick of the switch and electricity began through the room, causing (Y/n) to wonder who had paid for the backup electricity. The house seemed fairly normal, a kitchen with a lounge and a bathroom, complete with an upstairs bedroom. A family's home was the right words to describe it but the thing at the back was just something else. A door with a silver star in the middle rested, five gemstones lodges in each point, the door stood behind a giant platform.

(Y/n) stood on it, tapping it curiously with her foot before returning to the map she had. She stared, the little 'x' indicating the house she was in. But what was she there to look for? (Y/n) dug around the house, only coming across clothes and utensils to be used, the bathroom was empty too, nothing but the toilet seemed to be operational.

So (Y/n) pulled the whistle out again, searching the plastic for any small engraved details she had possibly missed the first time. Nothing. She wasn't sure about what to do and her small journey seemed to have so far become a waste.

How was this place going to save the earth from the second sun? And how did this place tie with her story and the six doodles? What was the purpose of the whistle anyway? More questions seemed to appear than be answered and that tired (Y/n) greatly.

She made her way to the crystal platform before sitting down, fiddling with the whistle and book in hand. She pocketed the book, safely placing it in a small pouch bag she had decided to bring with her, leaving her to inspect the tool she found. She twisted the piece in hand, tapping it against her knee.

She blew into it, rather softly, to the point of wondering if she even blew into it at all. But the platform she sat on did something and that something seemed to react to the sound of the whistle tool. She stood up abruptly, the small platform glowing brightly as she hopped away, a white beam of light shooting up towards the roof of the building before dimming and disappearing just as quickly as it appeared.

"Wha-" she stopped, looking between the platform and the whistle in her hand. "Did...did I cause the thing to light up?" She asked to no one in specific. She inspected the platform, blowing the whistle lightly again and watching in amusement as the space glowed.

Hesitantly, she reached out to touch the light, surprised to find that it was ok. She bit her lip, submerging her body into the weird experience, body suddenly floating up into the middle of space. "What does this do?" She called out to the void, poking her head out of the light perimeter.

She gasped at the freezing air that hit her face, no oxygen and hundreds and thousands of other light beams bouncing everywhere she looked, she felt her face grow dizzy, pulling in for a breath as her face paled. "I...I don't understand." She held her head. "What...where?" She clutched desperately at the heartbeat that increased. "I want to go back! Back to the house thing!" the light disappeared as if on commands, gravity calling (Y/n) back to earth as she fell once more towards the crazy platform.

It was dangerous. That's all (Y/n) cared for, and the fact that the magic platform had somehow listened to her.

She looked in surprise at the room. "T-thank you?" She questioned. She looked at the whistle. "What did you do?" she mumbled. "Is this some teleporter thingy?" She went silent. "Was this the thing that I was told to go to? Is this what that map wants me to see?" She pulled out the notebook, skimming the doodles questioningly. "These are all locations." She stated, tracing a finger over the markings before turning to look at the platform. "Does...do you know these places I wonder?" (Y/n) said.

She stepped onto the platform cautiously, ensuring she wouldn't fall out that time, skimming the sketches for a place to try going to first. Her eyes settled on the mountains, curious to see if the teleporter could handle such a vague task. "Ok..." She cleared her throat, looking down towards the ground. "Um...can you take me to the uh...mountain? Thing? I don't really know WHICH mountain but it has to do with my family...uh Steven Universe? My grandfather? Or uh..." she flipped through the book. "The... 'Crystal Gems'?" she blew the whistle quickly.

When nothing happened, (Y/n) bit her lip. "You don't know...huh? I knew it wasn't going to work, it was too vague-!" The teleporter lit up, cutting the girl's sentence off as she felt her body suck into an empty void. She sucked her stomach in, arms to her side and her feet neatly crossed. Suddenly experienced with the whole ordeal of teleportation.

Then the light faded, the gravity connected and surrounded her body as she gracefully landed, a new environment surrounding her as she found herself on a similar platform to the one inside the house she stood in minutes ago. She stepped off, looking at the crystal stage while placing her book inside the small pouch safely.

It was strange, to be on one platform and somehow end up in another but (Y/n) brushed that aside to settle hr focus on the subject at hand. Placing the whistle inside her pouch bag, she turned her head to face the only footpath there was.

She followed it, not exactly certain for what she was looking for. Another clue? Or perhaps a friend of her grandfather? She made her way up the sloping path, almost certain that whoever her grandfather was friends with hadn't left the area for years. She began to pant, wondering how an elderly would have been able to walk the rocks and climb the small ledge resting in her way.

And then she came to a small cliff, grass evenly spread with a few wild flowers people sometimes called weeds splotching the zone. She made her way to the edge, confused and slightly disappointed. She had expected more than just a cliff and at least expected some sort of clue.

She walked to the edge to sit and think of what to do. She knew she was close and she had come too far to stop. Looking up, the second sun was in view, not so close compared to when she last saw it but there nonetheless.

She stood up, reaching out to the vast air, as if to grab something in curiosity when the second sun reflected something mid-air.

And then a small floating island appeared, another following behind until a trail of them leading slightly higher than the cliff she was on appeared. Nothing but a fountain stood from what (Y/n) could see and the sound of metal scrapping against metal.

She scrambled up the first floating island, hastily jumping to the next and steadying herself as the small platform rolled on its' point slightly. It was like a death trap with a long drop beneath. But heights were the least of her problems.

She jumped again, foot just reaching the next as she pulled herself up. Her heartbeat sped as she slowly made her way across and up to the larger island on the top, a giant fountain with louder echoes of metal came into her senses. "Grrah!" Came a voice, young and somewhat annoyed. (Y/n) concluded that this voice wasn't old or frail and somewhat strong, perhaps the descendant of whom she was supposed to meet? It made plausible sense and seemed more likely than not so with that in mind, (Y/n) jumped and grabbed at a dangling root of some sort at the edge of her targeted island, climbing and pushing herself until her muscles were sore.

And the metal clanging stopped.

Light footsteps made their way towards the girl, stepping off the fountain and walking to where she lay her body tiredly. A shadow covered her eyes. "A...human?" The voice questioned, as if such thing was impossible.

(Y/n) frowned, sitting up and turning to the sound of the voice. "What do you mean, 'A hu-'" (Y/n) paused, looking at a rather young woman with peach hair neatly pulled back into a point. She wore blue with a yellow star and shorts with pink socks and blue ballet flats. A spear was in her hand, an intricate twisted blade at the top, leading (Y/n)'s eyes to stare at the big pearl that rested, embedded into the woman's forehead.

"Who are you?" (Y/n) finally spoke.

"I should be asking you, or more or so less, how did you get here...I thought I blocked all human ways for entry to this place." She went on to mumbled. "Apart from the warp pads..."

"Oh so that's what they are." (Y/n) said, pulling out the whistle, "I used this..." the woman's sky blue eyes widened in disbelief.

"The warp whistle! How- Where did you find that?" (Y/n) looked at the instrument in surprise.

"I was given it." The woman took a double take at the girl.

"Given." She repeated. "By whom." She cautiously gripped her spear tightly, eyes narrowing and making her facial features cold, unlike her usual beautiful appearance. (Y/n) bit her lip.

"My mother." She said slowly, standing up, "I was told to find help should something strange should happen, I was told to find my grandfather's friends... but since I have no idea who they are or if they are even alive, I've had to follow this book I was left before my mother died." She didn't know why she told the mysterious woman this but it felt necessary.

"Book?" She asked, not talking as much. (Y/n) hesitantly pulled out the book she had found under her mother's bed, slowly passing it into pale hands. The woman turned the book over delicately, flipping through the pages as her eyes widened, closing slowly as she let a breath out and shut the cover of the book, only to open her eyes as she handed the paper back. "You said your... grandfather's friends?"

"Y-yes." (Y/n) mumbled, pocketing the book with the so called 'warp whistle'.

"And your grandfather is...?" the woman almost looked tearful.

"Steven? Steven Universe?" (Y/n) questioned, looking up at the woman.

"I don't believe it." She mumbled.

"I'm sorry, what-"

"Steven's daughter had a child?!" (Y/n) bit her lip. "But...how long has it been then?"

"Do...you know someone I could-" (Y/n) began.

"Yes." The woman immediately cut her off, spear in hand as she began to fiddle with the handle. "Yes your grandfather's friends." She frowned. "What do you need us for?"

"Wait... us?" The woman nodded.

"The Crystal Gems, we are the friends you so speak of." (Y/n) raised her eyebrows.

"But...!" (Y/n) tried to piece together the puzzle. Luckily the woman seemed to be able to answer.

"You don't know the Crystal Gems." It was a statement of fact rather than a question. (Y/n) shook her head, pointing towards the sky.

"I have no idea who or what that is but I do know that...the Crystal Gems can help stop that second sun!" The second sun seemed to have stayed in the same position, distinct features almost impossible to describe. The woman followed (Y/n)'s indication, squinting her eyes before sighing.

"That's no second sun – it's a Red Eye. I wouldn't be surprised if Earth is invaded within the next year or so." (Y/n) widened her eyes.

"Who will? Why?" (Y/n) bit her lip, already recalling the information in the book. "Because whatever they are, they aren't here for Earth, they are here for me." The lady paused to look at (Y/n) carefully.

"Of course they are." She agreed finally, "They think you're Rose Quartz." (Y/n) raised a brow.

"What kind of name is... 'Rose Quartz'?" she asked.

"She was the original leader of the Crystal Gems, a team of gems who believed Homeworld was in the wrong with abusing Earth's resources, and we fought a war to protect this miserable planet." A blue ballet flat kicked at the ground aimlessly. "What a waste." (Y/n) almost didn't hear it for her remark was nothing but a murmur.

"A... waste?" (Y/n) asked.

"It should have been clear the moment Rose gave up her form to create Steven, once the boy existed, it was as if our leader willingly surrendered..."

"Is Homeworld a place...gems come from?" (Y/n) didn't quite understand. "And what's a gem?" The woman paused.

"I never thought your mother would pass the opportunity to explain your gem side." She stated, "Very well, if I must...Homeworld IS a place where gems come from, and in turn, gems are a species created to conquer solar systems, power in number was always our strategy, fusion and such used in battle-"

"Fusion?"

"When one or more gems combine strengths and physical attributes into one being." The woman pressed on, "The point is, a rebellion was formed, the Crystal Gems, to stop other gems from harming the earth...we were victorious and after that... Steven came..."

"So...you are a..." (Y/n) looked at the white stone, "Pearl?"

"That would also be the name I go by, yes." Pearl nodded. (Y/n) sighed.

"Well, I know you stay here...for some reason, but we have to stop this...Red Eye."

"We?" Pearl asked in disbelief, "My word no! I can barely summon my second spear properly these days let alone fight!" she picked up her spear, allowing it to easily vanish in a puff of sparkles, (Y/n) not bothering to question it. Magic seemed to be the theme so she just stuck with it.

"But... we can fight!"

"Not so simple, you have no gem, I believe since Steven had no physical way to pass it on to his daughter for you. Therefore, you have no weapon." She summoned her spear from a white glow that emitted from her gem to demonstrate, allowing it to disappear once satisfied.

"Then I'll train, we HAVE to beat...the Red Eye."

"Two of us can't really do much." Pearl said.

"Well you're pessimistic." (Y/n) frowned, "What if we recruited others to help? Start a new Crystal Gems!"

"The Crystal Gems are finished" Pearl stated, "We have been for quite some while." She said the last part with a hint of sadness, causing (Y/n) to bite her lip.

"But why?"

"Simple, it was a couple years after your mother was born, I remember it so easily... we were all at the temple- probably the house you were in to get here, Garnet, Amethyst, Steven, Connie, your mother and I were sitting down and we talked. Humanity wasn't worth the effort we were putting up for it. Why spend years protecting something that just ends up fighting themselves? Humans created wars, humans attacked humans, humans invented weapons, humans became psychotic...we just figured that if a species couldn't protect themselves, why bother trying to prevent the inevitable?"

"So you disbanded." (Y/n) said finally. "And you've been here alone since then?"

"Yep...just me and...this place...where I devoted my life to Rose Quartz... "Pearl agreed.

"Please." (Y/n) said silently, "If not for humanity then for me. Help me stop the Red Eye, help me find the Crystal Gems and team up to protect the reminiscence of Rose Quartz." Pearl looked at (Y/n) deceivingly. "My mother told me to come to YOU guys for help...she believed in you, my grandfather believed in you...be the gems that his book says you are."

"Even if I want to help, I don't know where the others are! They could be anywhere, there are thousands of warp pads on this planet and the chance of getting the right location is small." (Y/n) pulled out the six doodles.

"Then how did I find you?" She passed the book towards the gem who took it in her hands.

"But how?" Pearl asked, looking at (Y/n), "Steven must have overheard our plans separately in private...but this story is new...four protectors of earth...well that could only be Steven, Garnet, Amethyst and I and the two others have to be Peridot and Lapis... and a second sun appeared but we were all gone? Sounds a lot like this situation right now."

"I think my mom classified most things as a 'second sun' since it'd probably be evil or something." Pearl looked at her.

"Well why didn't you ask?" Pearl pointed out as (Y/n) bit her lip.

"She passed away recently." Pearl's eyes widened.

"I'm so sorry... I forget that humans have such short life spans... and your father?"

"He died when I was four."

"Gosh I'm so sorry." (Y/n) nodded in a bittersweet fashion.

"It's fine. What matters is finding the others, who do you recommend I find first?" Pearl looked at (Y/n) in thought.

"I say the barn, I have a good feeling I know who's there and if I'm right, she'll be a useful asset to finding the others." Pearl began, bitting her lip.

"Are you talking about the family barn?" (Y/n) asked.

"Well yes, I assume you've heard of it no?" Pearl asked.

"Yes... I know we have one but that's about it..."

"Well, we should make our way there if we are to stop the Red Eye's arrival."

"Wait... we?" (Y/n) repeated, Pearl looked at her incredulously.

"I'm not one to let Rose Quart's memory die...and besides...you're technically my family..." Pearl began, lost in thought. "Besides, I'm the only one you know who understands gem technology... well that point is invalid since technically you could warp there alone and find her."

"And who would that 'her', be?" (Y/n) asked as Pearl straightened out her back.

"Peridot." She simply replied.
