The True Meaning Of Fusion (We Need To Talk)
Greg gets everything ready for his fusion dance with Rose as his definitive attempt to have her finally understand him so he can understand her. He stands by his van, putting a finger to his chin. Not that far away, the warp pad activates.
Greg pulls himself together, realizing that it's time. He steps up to his small pink record player and he starts up the tune. Greg takes a breath as Rose walks up to him, chuckling. "What is all this?" With a sigh, Greg turns around and he approaches her.
He puts his hand out for her to take it. They take a step forward and they slide on the platform. They twist around and they take a step back from each other. Rose takes her step and Greg takes his by pressing his shoe on a button.
The platform lights up and they smile. Greg looks over the steps nearby with confidence. He brings Rose over to them with a quick step in their pace. Greg moves back on the stairs as he reaches the top. Face to face with Rose, Greg narrows his eyes and he pulls her in.
After he pulls away, Greg looks around to see if anything has changed. He stares down at Rose, whose eyes are shining with stars. Greg shakes his head. "We...we didn't fuse." Rose stares at Greg, raising an eyebrow. "What?!"
She starts laughing as she recovers from the attempt. "You can't fuse! You're a human!" Greg backs away from her in disbelief. "I know! That's the problem! I'm just a human!"
"That's not a problem. I love humans. You're all so funny."
A part of Greg snaps as he grits his teeth. "Look, these last few months have been great." Rose narrows her eyes. "Oh yes."
"But I'm getting a little worried about the future."
"Oh! Just ask Garnet."
"I'm starting to wonder if you...respect me?" Rose burst out laughing. "You're hilarious, Mr. Universe." She continues to laugh as Greg tries desperately to talk to her. "Rose, please!" Greg starts to lose himself in her laughter. "Can you just-!" Greg growls.
He turns away from Rose and he dashes off the steps. Rose continues to laugh as Greg rushes to the van. "WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING AT ME?!" Rose stops and she turns around as Greg detaches his hand from the record player.
"WHY CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!" Rose looks down. "I don't understand." Greg facepalms. "Ugh! This was such a stupid idea! Why did I do this for you?!" He balls his hands into fists. "Rose, if I was different, if I was...a Gem, would you understand me?"
Rose frowns as she looks away. "I'm not sure about that." Greg steps up to the trunk of his van. "I want you to understand me. Why does it have to be this hard? Is all you really see inside of me is just another human?"
"Greg, I...I want to understand you. I just don't know how I could."
"Well, how about we...talk?" Rose looks back at Greg and she nods. "Look, I hardly know you at all. We met that night at the concert and you were the only one there who saw me play. Why...were you there?"
"I was...I heard your music and I wanted to see where it was coming from. But I saw you and...I just don't know what happened between us. Is this wrong?" Greg grimaces. "It may be."
"I'm sorry."
"I'm...sorry too. Things have been really complicated lately. Maybe it is true. Maybe I do know...nothing about you."
"Why would you say that?" Greg puts a hand on his head. "You're like...an alien."
"An alien?"
"You don't even know what that means?!" Greg's eyes well up. "How can we make this work?! We don't know anything about each other! Maybe...we should unfuse."
"You mean..." Greg nods and he turns away, folding his arms.
Suddenly, something cries out from the distance. "HA HA! YES! IT DIDN'T WORK! IT DIDN'T-!" Pearl gulps as Greg and Rose stare at her. "I mean...uh...I mean..." Rose glares at her and Pearl backs away. "Pearl!" Pearl shakes as she looks away.
"You told Greg all of this, didn't you?" Pearl holds her tongue. "DIDN'T YOU?!"
"Rose, I-!"
"Pearl, why did we really form Rainbow Quartz earlier?"
Pearl blushes. "I just wanted to show him fusion."
"Or did you want to show him off and treat him like he means nothing to us?!" Pearl glares at Greg. "You will never fuse with her. You're not a Gem. You are a human and like I've said before, all you are is a phase. She's been with other humans just like you and you are no different."
"Pearl, that's enough!" Pearl grits her teeth as she looks upon Rose. "You and I..." She put out a finger to motion her towards her. "We need to talk."
"But, Rose-!"
"Inside the temple! Now!" Pearl looks down as she squints her eyes.
She looks over at Greg with a death glare as she walks away with her. Greg watches them step up towards the temple as a gentle hand is placed on his shoulder. "It worked." Greg jumps and he turns his head to face Garnet.
"What?"
"Fusion isn't just about what's been on the outside, but what's been changed on the inside." She presses a finger on his chest. "In here." Greg smiles. "Thanks, Garnet." Amethyst steps up to them. "Woah. That went down faster than a sinking ship!"
Garnet adjusts her visor, frowning. "Garnet?" Greg looks back at the temple. "Do you know what's going to happen to Pearl?" Garnet just stares at the temple. "Garnet?" He looks down and he closes his eyes.
Steven and Connie watch Greg get up from the trunk of his van. "Well, that's what happened. That night I learned a very important lesson that I'll never forget about. I was never about to fuse with Rose the same way you guys did. You'll have to figure it all out by yourselves."
Steven looks down as Connie looks over to him. "So, wait a minute." She looks back at Greg. "What happened to Pearl after that went down?"
"She...it's best that I don't talk about it. All I know is that she...hates me right now." Steven looks back up as Greg heads into the car wash building.
"Excuse me." Steven gazes at the sunset. "Steven?" Steven gets up from the van. "I'm going back to the temple. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Oh. Okay, Steven. Bye!" She waves as Steven stares at the sunset, heading down the sidewalk.
