5- Pew Pew Pew

The next few months are hectic, to say the least. Your days are spent trying to help the soldiers on the front line, with varying rates of success. You never have time to get to know the nurses, not with the battles raging and the constant rotation of camps. Peggy offered to join you on almost every trip from camp to camp, but even then it was hard to leave the battlefields. Nurses were moved from station to station due to the lack of them, and it meant you could never receive letters from Steve or Bucky, and you felt bad leaving the nurses understaffed. "Cheer up Y/N, you'll like your next station." You look at Peggy with a raised eyebrow and she grins. "Well, once we get there, Steve will be performing, and it just so happens that we have time to watch." The corners of your mouth rise and you lunge at Peggy, swarming her with a hug. "Thank you so much! I'll get to see Steve!" She gives you a squeeze and chuckles.

You step off the jeep and give Peggy a hand down. You walk behind the green tents and see Steve standing stoically in front of a group of very unimpressed soldiers. "How many of you are ready to help me sock ol' Adolf on the jaw?" You bring your hand to your mouth to stop the laugher as the troupes stay silent. Steve, now used to immense praise, stumbles through his words. "Okay, uh, I need a volunteer!" A man calls out from the crowd. "I already volunteered! How do you think I got here?" The whole camp chuckles and you snicker with them. Another man calls out. "Bring back the girls!" All of the men cheer and clap as Steve looks off stage. "I think they only know the one song, but I'll see what I can do." Yet another man calls out to him. "You do that sweetheart!" And another. "Nice boots tinkerbell!" Steve looks around. "Come on guys, we're all on the same team here." Another man calls out. "Hey Captain, sign this!" He stands up, turns away from the stage, and pulls his pants down. The base cheers as Peggy shakes her head. People start to throw food at Steve and he walks off. You turn to Peggy and sigh. "Well, that was not how I thought that would go." Peggy returns your curled lips and nods "We should talk to him." You grin and lead her backstage.

You let Peggy talk to Steve first, and you wait, leaning against the stage. You smile as Steve looks up from his sketchbook to see her. You can't hear everything they're saying clearly, but you laugh as she calls him a dancing monkey. "I finally got everything I wanted, and I'm wearing tights." You hear him pause and take the chance to walk in. "Well, I think you look stupid tights or no tights." He stands up and gives you a hug, causing you both to chuckle. "Does everything you've ever wanted include me being away from you? What a shame." You bring your hands to your chest with fake shock, making Peggy snicker. Just as you are about to keep talking, you all turn your heads at the beeping of a horn and a car stopping at the medical tent. "Well, that's my job, I best be off." Steve nods and Peggy gives you a small wave as you run over. "Hello I am nurse Y/N Rogers, I just arrived here to start tomorrow, but I feel I might be needed." You watch as the nurse you spoke to turns around. "Well, long time no see. We should start right away." Your smile widens at the sound of Anna's voice. It had been a while, but you knew she was happy to see you too.

After the big rush of men, you walk over to Anna and give her a big hug. "How have you been? It's been so long!" Anna smiles and turns to the room full of groaning men. "better than the 107th apparently." Your head snaps to her. "The 107th?" She nods and gestures to the men surrounding you. "This is all that's left of them, well, that and the crowd." Your eyes widen and she nods. "Yeah, they went on a dangerous mission, its a miracle this many came back at all." You start looking around, searching for Bucky, but can't find his face among the crippled and injured men. You rush outside, muddying your heels as you race to find Steve. You see him inside the Colonel's tent and dash inside. As you walk in you hear the colonels throaty voice ring out. "I have signed more of these condolence letters today than I would care to count, but the name does sound familiar." Your face falls and you fight to keep your eyes dry. You start rubbing your forefinger with your thumb as he continues. You step forward and stand next to Steve. "I'm sorry." You look at the Colonel surprised, he almost never showed emotions. "What about the others? Are you planning a rescue mission?" You turn to Steve, barely paying attention. "Yeah, it's calling winning the war." Steve furrows his brows and looks at the colonel. "but if you know where they are, why not at least..." Before he can finish, the colonel interrupts. "They're thirty miles behind the lines, through some of the most heavily fortified territories in Europe, we'd lose more men than we'd save. but I don't expect you to understand that because you're  a chorus girl." You hang your head as he talks. "Oh think I understand just fine." the colonel glares at him as he walks by. "Then understand somewhere else. If I read the posters correctly you have someplace to be in thirty minutes." Steve looks at the map, and you see that determined glint in his eyes. "Yes sir, I do."

You walk behind Steve and pull his arm back. "Steve, I know what you're going to do, and..." Steve shakes his head. "You can't stop me Y/N, not this time, it's too important." You look at him and stare into his eyes. "I'm joining you." Steve frowns and shakes his head once more. "No way, it's too dangerous." You step forward, keeping your steel gaze. "No Steve, it's too important." He looks at you. "You can't fight, you'll get yourself killed!" You knee him in the stomach and throw his head back when it jolts down. Now off balance, you give him a strong push and he lands in the mud. "I think I can handle myself." He smiles and runs alongside you as you go to the locker rooms.

You wait by the door as Steve rummages around for his jacket. Your eyes widen as you see Peggy walk in, completely missing you. "What do you plan to do, walk to Austria?" Steve keeps searching while she speaks. "If that's what it takes." She walks over to him and tilts her head towards him. "You heard the Colonel, your friend is most likely dead." You take a step towards her. "Maybe he isn't. And this isn't just for Bucky, there are others there too Peggy. We have to help them." Peggy turns and frowns at you. "Even so, he's devising a strategy, if he detects.." Steve grabs his jacket and throws it on. "By the time he does that it will be too late. I have Y/N, I can do this, I have to do this." He grabs one of the helmets ff the shelf and rushes out. Peggy follows him with a sigh. "Steve!" He throws everything into a jeep, and you hop onto the passenger side. "You told me you thought I was meant for more than this, did you mean that?" Peggy gazed into his eyes. "Every word." You smile and hit the side of the truck. "Good, we don't have a moment to lose. You have to let us go." Steve hops into the driver's seat and Peggy walks up to the door. "I can do more than that."

...

You pat down your skirt as the plane's engine rumbles. You turn your head and look at Peggy. "The HYDRA camp is in Krasburg, tucked between these two mountain ranges. It's a factory of some kind." She leans forward and shows you and Steve the amp. Howard leans back from the pilot's seat to face you. "Should be able to drop you on the doorstep." Steve nods and looks at Peggy. "Just get us as close as you can. You know, you two are going to be in a lot of trouble when you land." Howard turns to look between you and Steve. "I can say the same about you two. And Y/N, keep yourself safe." You grin and stand up. You walk next to the door and look at Howard. "But how would I have fun?" Steve chuckles and shakes his head. Howard turns to Peggy. "Agent Carter, if we're in too much of a hurry, I thought we could stop off in Lucerne for some late night fondue." You grin as Peggy rolls her eyes and Steve's widen. "Stark is the best civilian pilot I've ever seen. He's mad enough to brave this airspace, we're lucky to have him." You roll your eyes and chuckle. "I don't know if lucky is the right word." Peggy smiles as Steve points between her and Howard. "So you two, do you... fondue?" Peggy rolls her eyes and you fight to contain your laughter. She leans forward and hands Steve a radio. "Here is your transponder. Activate it when you're ready and the signal will send us straight to you." Steve holds it up and looks at Howard. "Are you sure this thing works?" He scoffs and looks back at Steve. "it's been tested more than you pal." You grin and lean your head on your hands. "But we all saw how the car went," Howard mumbles something along the lines of that was one time, why does everyone bring up the car? I don't see anyone else build a car! And it worked for a second!, as Steve and Peggy smile. You fall back as gunshots hit the plane "I know it's a bad time, but oh shoot!" Steve frowns as you give him a small grin. You duck your head and crawl back over to the door. Steve nods at you and walks over. Peggy jumps up and follows him. "Get back here! We're taking you all the way in!" You open the door and sigh. "Well, plans change!" You jump out, closely followed by Steve, and hear Peggy yell "Bloody Americans!" as you plummet to the ground.

You stretch your arms out as you fall, the wind scraping against your face. You pull the string on your parachute and gracefully step to the ground, grinning as Steve scrambles up from the floor. "YOU HAD A PARACHUTE?!" You nod and walk past him, towards the camp. "They were right there. And you act like I'm the reckless one." You and Steve tread quickly through the thick forests. As the grey mist surrounds, providing cover, you grin. "Hey Steve, if we die, we will be mist." You snicker as Steve rolls his eyes and groans. "Maybe I'll hand you over to the Nazis." You punch him on the arm and stop suddenly. You peer out from the tree line and study the stone fortress of the HYDRA base. Turrets sprout from the ground with lights peering out, keeping surveillance. Guards walk around, armed and ready. You grab Steve's arm and pull him down as cars and motorbikes start coming down the dirt road. You look at each other and share a quick nod. You wait for the last car and run behind it. You hold the back panel and swing your legs over, landing inside the truck. You roll over to make space for Steve and see two men staring at you. "Oh. Hello!" You punch one in the face, grab his jacket, and throw him over Steve and outside the truck. You kick the second man across his side. You bring your leg up and smash it down, the man falling unconscious. You grab him and throw him out, Steve staring at you. "What?" You stay quiet and set yourself up just behind the fabric flap that you pushed aside to get in. Steve crouches in front, his shield up and ready for the guards. As expected, as they slide the flap to the side, Steve presses his shield forward, knocking them out. You roll your eyes as you hop out of the truck after Steve, and follow him away from the truck. "My take-out was way cooler." He looks at you as he weaves between the tanks and shakes his head. "Nah uh." You silently run forward, passing Steve. You look at the tank in front of you and smile. You put one leg on the front and lift yourself up. Using the window, you climb onto the adjacent roof and smile at Steve. You frown as he does it easily. "Stupid serum."

You climb through an open window and run through the halls, stopping at a large metal door. Steve knocks on it, tempting the guard to walk over. As the guard opens the door, you shut it on his face and Steve punches him. He falls to the ground and you grab his hands and drag him into the hallway. You nod to Steve and walk into the large warehouse-style building. As you sneak through, you look at the equipment that fills the cold hall. Tables of weapons shine with a bright blue gleam. You hide behind stacks of canisters as a guard passes through. You wave your hand at Steve, catching his attention. You point at a metal door and he nods. You run over and peek through the small dusty window. As the guard starts to walk away, you open the door and step forward. As your heels touch the raised metal walkway you wince, preparing for a sound. You slow your foot just before it touches the narrow metal grate, and slowly make your way behind the guard. You kick his lower back and knock him unconscious as he stumbles forward. You look over the railing to see the dozens of cages holding prisoners. "Why hello boys." The prisoners look up at you as you walk over to the ladder and climb down. They then turn their heads to Steve, who is in his costume and a brown jacket. "Who are you supposed to be?" Steve looks down at them, puffing and stumbling through his words. "I'm, Captain America." You take a deep breath and resist the urge to say an idiot. Steve picks the keys off the guard and throws them to you. You unlock the cages and look around for any sight of Bucky before walking back over to Steve as he talks to one of the men. "There's an isolation ward at the back, but no one's ever come back from it." You grab Steve's arm. "Steve, I'm coming with you." He shakes his head and you put your hands on your hips. "Tell me one good reason!" He flicks his arm in front of him. "Someone needs to help them out. Take the others back, I'll meet you at the tree line." You nod reluctantly and chew on your lip. "Hey, former prisoners, come here for a second! The tree line is northwest 80 yards past the gate. Get out fast and give 'em hell." You smile as Steve gives you a thumbs up and walks out. One of the men steps forward and looks at you. "Does he know what he's doing?" You give him a fierce nod and grin. "Yeah. He's knocked out Adolf Hitler over 200 times." They all raise their eyebrows and stand in silence. "It's an inside joke. Just, come on."

You run out of the hallway and push the doors open. The men run out in all directions, attacking guards, stealing weapons, and yelling. You run forward and take down a guard while avoiding bullets as best you can. You watch as, to your side, one man grabs a guard's gun and another kicks him in the knees. You grab the guard's neck and snap it. The knee kicker looks at the man holding the gun and takes a breath. "You know how to use that thing?" He shrugs and points it at the HYDRA base wall, and pulls the trigger. A small ball of blue light shoots out and the wall explodes. You laugh and pat him on the back. "Well enough, apparently." You run towards the tree line, taking out more guards as you go. Once you have left the base you round up all the men up near the gate. As you look around, scanning their faces, you notice that they are all staring at you. "Do I have blood on my face?" They watch as you start rubbing at your face. One man steps forward. "Well, yeah, but, it's not that. It's just, you're a girl." You freeze and pull your arms down. "Fine observation eagle eyes." Another man steps forward. "And you can fight!" You smile and nod your head. "Well, I didn't save you by batting my eyelashes, did I? Any other obvious statements you wish to share?" Everyone falls to silence as one man points at your leg. "You've been shot." You look down with genuine surprise to see the blood seeping out of your bullet wound,  placed right above your knee. "Well, thank you. That is helpful. I hadn't actually noticed."

A/N

Hey, just wanted to say that I was just finishing this when an earthquake hit us in Australia, so that was not fun. All of my friends, family, and I are safe, but I just want to say that I have my hopes and best wishes out for those who have damage to their homes or have been injured.
