10- A Set of Goodbyes
"Johan Shmidt belongs in a big house. He thinks he's a god and he's willing to blow up half the world to prove it. Starting with the USA." Phillips points to a map as he talks, pacing back and forth. You look across the table and smile at Sam, who is picking at his nail beds. Howard walks in, late as usual, and sits next to Pinkerton. "Schmidt's working with powers beyond our capabilities. He gets across the Atlantic, he'll wipe off the entire eastern seaboard in an hour." Steve places his files down and looks at the table. Sam looks over at the Colonel. "How much time we got?" Phillips looks up from his papers and gives a fragment of a smile. "According to my new best friend, under 24 hours." You lean over to Dugan, who is sitting next to you. "Can't believe I've been replaced." He brings his hand to his mouth to stifle his small laugh. Falsworth leans forward on the table. "Where is he now?" The Colonel points to a small picture in his hands. "HYDRA's last base is here, in the alps. 500 feet below the surface." Moita picks up the photo of the snow-capped mountains and sighs. "So what are we supposed to do, I mean it's not like we can just knock on the door." You pout your lips and look at him. "I don't see why not." Steve looks up from the table and makes eye contact with you, wearing a smirk. "That's exactly what we're going to do."
After the meeting, Sam walks around the long table and smiles. You grin as you stand up and walk together in a side hug. "You know, this is a super dangerous mission." You lean your head on his shoulder with a small frown. "I know Sam, and I also know that I have to be a part of it." He sighs and nods. You stop walking and face him, your head resting on his neck. He smiles at how perfectly you fit together, a complete jigsaw. "Yeah. Maybe, when the war is over, we could, I don't know, move forward." You stop walking and look up at him. "What does that mean?" He gives you a lopsided grin and takes your hand. "Maybe, if you wanted, we could live together." You can't control your beaming smile as you pull him into a hug. "I would love that. A lot." You chuckle as he lets out a sigh of relief. "You know, maybe you could meet my parents as well. They always ask about you. And maybe I could meet yours." You look down and curl your lips in. You rub your forefinger and look back up at him. "I actually don't have parents for you to meet." His eyes widen as he looks at you. "Oh, Y/N, sorry. I shouldn't have mentioned it." You shake your head and give him a small smile. "No Sam, it's fine really. Now, our apartment, I'm thinking black walls." He laughs and shakes his head. "What? Why?!" He laughs more and pulls you back into the side hug before kissing your forehead. "Because, as much as I love your sense of style, I'm not going through with that." You both laugh and everything feels perfect.
For the first time in a long time, there feels like a bubble of joy is protecting you from the rest of the world. It is protecting you from the war, from HYDRA, from the sadness of Bucky's death. But soon, you will have to pop the bubble and lose its rainbow sheen.
...
You let your long skirt fly in the wind as you lean on your motorcycle. You follow Steve with a massive smile. A group of HYDRA men slink behind Steve, and you drag behind with a smirk. You shoot one down as they start firing at Steve. You drift to the side as you make a sharp turn, dust flying behind you. You see Steve shoot out ropes from each side of his bike in front of you. You quickly stand on your bike and jump over, landing on the HYDRA bikes of one of the men who fell off. You sit down with a grin. You move to the side as Steve sets fire to one of the bikes, and follow two men on a shortcut. You shoot them down and watch as another man flips over the front of his bike. You join the main path again and see the slick base up ahead. You move to the left and get ready to use the slanted wall as a ramp. Steve sits his shield on his bike as a laser cannon shoots at both of you. You just swerve and line up for the jump. A tank comes from a gamp in the middle and Steve shoots it down, causing it to blow up. As you leave the ramp and fly into the air, you can feel the explosion growing before it settles. "Do you always have to be so damn dramatic?" Steve chuckles and nods his head. "I get it from you!" You land in the base and shoot men down as they fire with their blue guns. You stand up on your bike and jump off as Steve does the same. His bike hits the base wall as the set explosion goes off. You and Steve keep fighting the men together. "Well, at least make this a challenge!" You hit the side of your gun as it runs out of ammo, before hitting more men as they come closer. You knee one man in the stomach and kick him back before elbowing another soldier and sweeping their legs from underneath them. You take your spare gun out of your thigh holster and start shooting again. As you do, men storm around you and start their flame guns, leaving you and Steve in a ring of impenetrable fire. "You know what, I take it back."
You jolt your shoulders as the men hold them back and walk you into the lab. You watch as Red Skull steps forward into the light. "Arrogance may not be a uniquely American trait, but I must say you do it better than anyone." He walks forward and stops in front of you. "But, there are limits, to even what you can do, or did Erksine tell you otherwise?" You frown as you stare at his cold, red skin. Steve looks up with a frown. "He told me you were insane." Red Skull stares into Steves's eyes and leans forward. "Ahhh. Resented my genius and denied me what was rightfully mine, but he gave you everything. He even gave a worthless nurse the smallest amount. What makes you two so special?" Steve chuckles with a small grin. You had told Steve before the mission, and he was shocked, to say the least. He hadn't even known that there was more serum, but he understood and respected Dr. Erkstines last wishes. "Nothing, we here are just two kids from Brooklyn." You wince as Red Skull punches Steve across the face, then slaps him and finally punches him in the gut. Steve falls to the ground coughing, before looking back up at him. "I could do this all day." He laughs and looks between the two of you. "Of course you can. But can she? She is practically a normal girl." He pauses as he turns to you. "Why would you think you could be successful on the battlefield? No girl can fight. Every woman has her limits. Now, I am on a very tight schedule." He brings up his gun and points it at your head. You give him a smile as you hear a faint click, and see three figures coming towards the window. Red Skull steps back and brings his gun down to look as well. You look at him with your grin still plastered on. "So am I." You swing one of your guards in front of you as he shoots, letting them take the shot for you. You duck as you hear the windows smashing and Sam, Pinkerton, and Moita start shooting. You watch as Red Skull runs out of the room. "Shit, STEVE, Johan's getting away!" Pinkerton runs up to one of the guards and grabs Steve's shield, throwing it back to him. "Rogers, you might need this!" Steve catches it with one hand and slides it up his arm. "Thanks!" You run down the hallway as he comes to the door. "No time to be polite Steve!" He runs after you, quickly catching up.
You duck as Red Skull shoots at you. You watch as Steve throws his shield, letting it rebound off walls to hold open the doors. "Nice shot." You both run forward, and you quickly pull him into a small cavern in the wall as a soldier starts shooting fire at you. You peer out after you hear him fall to the floor. You run out to see Peggy. You smile as he walks up to Peggy. "You're late." She looks up at him. "Aren't you about to?" His eyes widen and he breaks into a run. "Right." You chuckle as you run after him. You slide beneath the shield as Steve takes it out, just making it out as the doors close.
You both run into the runway, and see a plane taking off. You both grab onto a rope and swing forward, avoiding getting trampled in the mess of soldiers fighting beneath you. You land and run forward as the plane gains speed, leaving you behind. Right as your face drops, your hope slipping away, a car pulls up beside you with Peggy and Colonel Phillips in the front seat. "Get in." You scramble in as he barks the order. You start getting close as the Colonel pushes a button. You and Steve stand up on the side of the car. "Keep it steady!" Peggy launches forward. "Wait!" She crashes a kiss onto Steves's lips and you laugh. "Look Colonel, before you try anything, I have a boyfriend." He shakes his head and he gives you the smallest laugh. Peggy blushes and pulls back. "Go get him." You shuffle forward as you sit under the plane. Just as it is about to take off, you jump and land on the wheels. You cling on as the plane takes flight. Steve follows and the both of you look back. "Well, that wasn't easy."
You cling to the cold metal as the wheels are brought into the plane. You jump off the wheel and walk up onto a metal platform. As you look around the space, you see small planes with different American cities on them. "Oh shit. These are bombs, aren't they Steve." He looks at you with wide eyes before nodding. You look up as you hear a door opening and see men running across another platform. You watch as Steve jumps and grabs into a pipe on the ceiling, swinging forward and kicking one of the men down. You reach for your gun, but remember that you took it out of your thigh holster earlier. You run forward and punch one o the men in the face, leaving him to stumble back. He grabs a knife out of his pocket and you smile before kicking your leg up, knocking it out of his hand. You snatch the knife in the air and throw it directly into his chest. "Wow, I liked that!" You take down another man, as does Steve, letting one man runoff. You follow him as he gets ready to jump down into one of the planes. Steve pulls a lever and the plane drops, leaving the man to fall out as well. You run behind Steve and kick another soldier back. "Watch out!" Steve looks up and frowns as another man comes. "I could say the same to you!" Steve punches him and he falls off the walkway. You turn around and see one man getting in one of the bombs. "STEVE!" Steve looks over and jumps onto the bomb. Another man tackles him and knocks his shield out of his hands. You shoot the man as the bomb drops. You stare below and tears form in your eyes as you watch the bomb fly out of view. You walk down and pick up his shield. You are shaking as you run your fingers over the ridges and marks. You turn around as the bomb flies back into the hanger and Steve steps out. You rub your eyes dry, walk over and hand him his shield. "Next time, don't almost die, it's very disheartening."
You creep along the plane, careful to lower your heels slowly so they don't make a noise. You carefully open the door into a large cockpit. You wave Steve in and walk up to the pilot's seat silently. As you peer around, you hear a buzzing sound coming from behind you. You turn as Red Skull shoots at the two of you with his blue laser gun. "You don't give up do you?!" You stand up and face him. "Never have and never will." You launch into a run, dodging as he shoots at you. As you crouch to avoid getting shot, Steve throws his shield, hitting Red Skull in the face. As he stumbles back you sweep his legs causing him to fall. You pick up Steve's shield as he bounces back up to his feet. You lift the shield to block Red Skulls' punches before slamming it into him. He staggers back before punching you in the face. You throw the shield to Steve as he rushes in to fight Red Skull. You can feel your vision blurring as you fall to the floor, and you shake your head to get rid of the pain. You watch as Steve and Red Skull fight. Steve grabs him and throws him to the floor before Johan picks up the shield and pushes Cap back. Steve throws him back onto the control panel, causing the plane to go down and you to get an idea. You struggle as you crawl to the control panel and start flying the plane. You swerve it again, causing the two boys to fall again. Red Skull brings out his pistol. "You could have the power of the gods! Yet you wear a flag on your chest and think you fight a battle of nations. I have seen the future captain, there are no flags." Steve runs around and dodges Red Skulls shots. You try to figure out where you are and your heart sinks. Steve throws the shield, knocking Johan back and breaking the large generator in the center of the room. A cage rises and the Tessaract falls out of place. Great strands of blue electricity run through the air. "What have you done?! NO!" Red Skull picks it up as he speaks. As he holds it, its weak blue glow strengthens, as does the streaks of lightning. As he holds it, his fingers start disintegrating as a steady stream of blue light rushes onto his hand. He screams in pain as he watches his own flesh be destroyed by his greatest desire. As the ray widens, his whole body is engulfed, and the only thing left is the Tesseract. The ray of light shoots out through the plane then suddenly stops, everything turning back to normal.
You look over at Steve as he picks up his shield. "Steve, Steve are you all good?" He nods his head and walks toward the windows silently. You frown and switch between a gruff voice and your own. "What about you Y/N? Oh, I'm fine, just a bit winded, thanks for asking." Steve shakes his head as you mock him. "Okay, land us safely." You look up at him and frown. "I can't." He stares down at you with wide eyes. "You can't? What do you mean you can't?" You point to the control panel. "1. I have no idea how to land a plane. 2. I can't find autopilot because everything is in german. 3. If I did find autopilot, the course is set to New York. 4. All of the doors are on complete lockdown, we can't get out. Steve, we have to crash it." Steve looks down at you. "Okay."
You twist the nob next to the microphone and speak into it. "Hello, this is Y/N Rogers with Captain Steve Rogers." You hear shuffling through the other side and Peggy's voice comes through. "Steve is that you! Are you alright? What about the plane?" You point the microphone to him with a smile. "Peggy, we have some trouble." You hear crackling before her voice resumes. "Give me your coordinates, I'll find you a safe landing site." Steve shakes his head, then members that she can't see him. "There can't be a safe landing. We have to force it down." You watch as Steve speaks into the microphone. "I'll get Howard on the phone, and he'll know what to do." Steve bounces his leg as you rub your forefinger. "There's not a lot of time. It's moving fast and heading to New York. We're putting her into the water." Steve looks out through the window. "Please, don't do this. We have time, we can work it out." Steve looks at the navigation system. "Right now I'm in the middle of nowhere and if I wait too long people will die. Peggy, this is our choice." You watch as he sits a photo of Peggy onto the dashboard. "I only have a few minutes. Five at most. Peggy, I'm gonna need a raincheck on that dance." You start to feel tears springing in your eyes as you listen. "Alright. A week next Saturday at the Stork Club." You watch as you start to part through the clouds slowly. "Got it" Steve stares out the large window. "8 o'clock on the dot, don't you dare be late. Understood?" Steve smiles. "You know, I still don't know how to dance." Steve turns to you. "I'll show you how, just be there." You turn to him with a small smile. "We'll have the band play something slow. I'd hate to step on your feet." You break through the clouds and see the thick layer of ice far below you.
You lean forward into the microphone. "Hey Peggy, is Sam there?" The speaker crackles and the voice on the other end brings a smile to your face. "Y/N, what's happening?" You step closer and feel the tear pouring out of your eyes. "I think I promised to do this a while ago." Sam looks over at Peggy with a raised eyebrow and turns back to the microphone. "What's going on?"
"Amapola, the pretty little poppy. Must copy it's endearing charm from you. Amapola, Amapola, how I long to hear you say "I love you.""
You let out small cries between the words of the soft sung tune. Your tears start to sting as the air gets colder, and the ice gets closer. "Y/N, you have an amazing voice." You sob and lean closer to the microphone. "I prefer to dance." You listen as the line starts to crackle. You walk over to Steve and pull him into a hug. You both let silent tears fall as the plane dives. "Hey, Steve?" He looks down into your eyes. "Yeah?" You give him a small smile. "I'm not mad about the date anymore." You fall back as the plane crashes, your head bangs against the metal and the ringing lulls you into unconsciousness.
