A Trick Turned into a Treat

COLLEGE AU

Prompt: reader gets invited to what she thinks is a costume party, Steve comes to her rescue.

A/N: I pretty much wrote this in a day or two, I wanted to get it out before Halloween.  Hope you'll like it.

Warning(s): public humiliation

You were walking out of a lecture, holding your books to your chest with your crossed arms as. As you were about to leave the room, you got stopped by a girl.

"Hey, Y/N, right?" She asked, not seeming very interested.

"Yes?" You asked, pulling the books closer to your chest.

"There's a party on 28th, few days before Halloween. It's at Bucky's. You know him, right?" Before you could answer, the girl shoved an invitation card between one of your books. "Here's the address. Remember to dress up!" She said before rushing off to somewhere.

You made your way to your dorm and set your books down. You were about to go grab some lunch but decided to check the invitation first. "Who throws a costume party few days before Halloween?" You wondered out loud as you opened the book. You took out the card and saw that it had all kinds of Halloween stickers on it. You thought it was a bit odd but shook it off and decided to go by a costume store before grabbing lunch.

You grabbed your keys and your wallet before leaving.

You got to the store in no time and looked through the rack and saw that it was almost empty. Buying a costume right before Halloween was almost impossible, all the good ones were sold out.

You sighed and went to the cashier, asking him if they had any costumes in the back.

They did have one sexy nurse costume. You didn't think about it for more than a second. "I'll take it."

Sure it was a typical Halloween costume but you weren't going to be the only one without a costume...

***

Well, you certainly weren't the only one without a costume.

You were the only one with a costume.

The girl, who you didn't know had played a prank on you with her friends.

Assholes.

You had gotten to Bucky's place. You knocked on the door, taking off your long overcoat, revealing your nurse costume. The door opened, Bucky welcomed you to the party with a warm smile but his smile dropped as he looked you up and down. He started chuckling, "What on earth are you wearing?" He asked.

You took a good look at him, seeing him in his normal everyday-wear. You stepped in the apartment and saw that nobody else had a costume. You then heard snickering from the back of the room.

If looks could kill, the girl who had invited you would have been dead the second you set your eyes on her.

You put your coat back on and took out the nurse hat, rushing to the kitchen and throwing it in the trash, preventing angry tears from escaping your eyes.

You felt humiliated. You sat on the kitchen counter with your head in your hands.

"Uhm, excuse me?" You heard a voice call for you. "Ma'am?"

You turned to look at the doorway with your brows furrowed. You stared at the tall blonde man on the doorway and let out a laugh. "Ma'am?" You asked.

The blonde scratched the back of his neck and looked down at the ground. "Sorry." He muttered and let out an awkward chuckle. "I just came to tell you that—"

You lifted your brow, waiting for him to spit out what was on his mind.

"I can lend you some clothes, if you want."

You smiled, hopped off the counter. "Show me the way." You said and followed him into his room. He took out some clothes from his drawer, giving you one of his shirts and gym shorts.

You took the clothes from him and changed into them in his dim room, not really caring if he saw you half naked. You had already been humiliated.

You placed the costume on his bed, neatly folded. You sat down on the edge of his bed and thanked him for lending you his clothes.

"No problem." He said with a small smile. "I'm sorry you had to go through that."

You sighed, shaking your head. "I just thought all those childish games would have stopped after high school." You rolled your eyes.

You two sat in silence for a few seconds. It was a bit uncomfortable, neither of you knew what to say.

"You're Steve, right?" You asked and he turned to you, nodding his head. "I've seen you in history lectures. You always sit up front."

"Yeah... I like to sit in the front, nobody really sits up front. There's pretty much nothing that can distract me. I like history a lot."

You nodded along, "So what is the best thing about history?"

And so Steve started talking about what he found to be the most interesting events to ever happen in history. The conversation then went on and on for hours, you never even left his bedroom.

***

When the sun started peeking through the blinds on Steve's bedroom window, you realized how long you had been in his room for. You looked at your phone that was running out of battery. "Damn, my phone is dying." You said and stood up from the bed. "I should probably go—"

"I have a charger." Steve said and you turned around, seeing him hand you one. "You can lend it."

You smiled and took the charger before thanking him. You plugged it in and made sure your phone started charging before you sat back down next to him. "You don't want me to leave, do you?" You asked, the smile never leaving your lips.

Steve shrugged, "Uhh..." He stammered as he scratched the back of his neck. "I just—"

"Hey, I'm already using your charged, I think that means I'm staying."

Steve smiled and relaxed immediately. He lowered his hand and let out a small sigh.

"Where's your bathroom?" You asked.

"Go past the kitchen and it's the next door to your left." Steve told you before you thanked him and got up.

You opened the door and walked out to be met with Bucky who was sitting on the couch in the living room. He was alone, everyone else had left. The party had ended and you had no idea how long ago.

He was smiling at you which made you lift an eyebrow in question. "Hi." He said.

"Hi?" You greeted back, questioningly.

He only continued to smile at you. You left few seconds after, shaking your head and continued your way to the bathroom.

Steve exited his room as well, running his fingers through his hair as he yawned. He started heading towards the kitchen but stopped when he heard his best friend calling him. "Steve?"

He turned around, facing his friend. "What?" He asked.

Bucky grinned knowingly which made Steve frown. "You know."

"No, I really don't." Steve sighed in annoyance. "What's up?" He asked and sat down on the couch.

Bucky looked at Steve, then to the direction of the bathroom, then back at Steve again. Steve looked at his friend in confusion until he finally got what he was trying to tell him. "Oh." Steve said and his cheeks turned slightly red. "We... Uhm—"

"That's my boy!" Bucky cheered as he wrapped an arm around Steve's shoulder. "You know, she's really hot, you caught yourself a good one, buddy—"

"We just talked." Steve interrupted before Bucky could continue.

"Talked?" Bucky asked and unwrapped his arm from around Steve. "So all this time you were just talking?" Steve nodded. "You didn't get any action?"

Steve shook his head. "But we had fun. She's great to chat with and—"

"You like her." Now it was Bucky's turn to interrupt Steve.

"Who said I liked her?"

"You like Y/N!" He almost yelled out.

"Shut up, jerk!" Steve whispered and slapped Bucky's arm. "She will hear you!"

"Ask her out!"

"What? No!"

"Steve," Bucky started and placed his hand on Steve's shoulder. "If you don't, I will."

"What?" Steve asked in disbelief and shrugged Bucky's hand off his shoulder. "You wouldn't do that!"

"No, I wouldn't," Bucky admitted. "but now I know you really like her. Ask her out."

The two continued arguing and didn't hear you coming out of the bathroom. You walked in the kitchen to see them bickering, Bucky telling Steve to ask you out, Steve protesting for reasons that you found absolutely ridiculous. You were convinced that he wanted to go out with you out but didn't have the courage to ask.

"Steve?" You called out and the two quieted down immediately.

"Y/N," Steve sighed. "I don't know how much you heard but—"

"Do you want to go grab a cup of coffee sometime?" You asked.

Steve quieted down and stared at you with his eyebrows slightly raised. He then turned to Bucky while he started stammering.

Bucky rolled his eyes and turned to you, "He would love to." He answered for Steve. "Is this morning okay? He has to help me clean all this up, I'm sure he could use a cup of coffee." He grinned.

You let out a small laugh and nodded, "That would be great." You smiled. "Do you need help with cleaning?" You asked politely.

Bucky turned to Steve and whispered, "She's a keeper." Bucky then turned to you again and stood up, leading you to the kitchen.

Steve sat on the couch, feeling slightly dumbfounded. He rested his head back against couch and chuckled to himself. "I really should have just asked her out." He muttered to himself before getting up and beginning to clean too.

***

After cleaning, you and Steve went to get that coffee he agreed to, or Bucky agreed to for him. Of course you dropped by your place to change into your own clothes before heading towards the coffee shop.

You had another enjoyable conversation with him and you spent another few hours together before you both went to bed. Neither one of you had slept the night before, you were feeling very tired and not even coffee could help with your sleep deprivation.

Steve, being the gentleman he is, walked you to your dorm. You stood there for a while, not really saying anything. After a few seconds of silence you took a step forward and kissed his cheek and thanked him for keeping you company. "I'll see you on Monday." You said and opened the door to your room.

"You'll sit with me in the front, right?" Steve asked.

"Definitely." You said before entering your room and closing the door, not without sending him a smile first.

Although the night started awfully,  you went to sleep that morning with a smile on your face.

A trick got turned into a sweet treat.
