Steve was heading off to training. He was so grateful to finally be helping the war effort. He was going to be apart of some experiment, but he didn't mind as long as he was doing something to help the war effort.
He didn't make many friends on the ride to his new home. In fact, he felt just as lonely as he had before leaving. He exited the bus to be lined up with the other soldiers. He was shocked to see a woman walking to them with a camera. She looked to be around his age.
She looked at them all and began to move the men in more of a cluster. Steve was shocked when she touched him. She was gentle as she moved him to the left side of the group. There was a moment he thought she lingered by him before she continued to work.
"Hurry up y/n. These men need to be trained."
She laughed rolling her eyes. "Mr. Phillips, you say anything else, and I'll take even longer."
He laughed patting her shoulder, "It's a good thing you're like the daughter I never had." Then he got serious, "As for you boys, prepare yourself for extensive training. We've got work to do."
He walked away, and y/n continued to laugh. Then she looked at the group once more.
"Alright, I'm going to take three pictures of you all. I'd like a serious one, one where you're all smiling, and a funny one."
She took all the pictures and left for Colonel Phillips to walk back to them. Steve wished she would've stayed, but he hoped to maybe see her again. After training, Steve slowly went to lay down on his cot. He was scared that he was going to run out of his asthma inhaler very quickly.
Since coming to train, Steve noticed the y/n lady all around the base. She took pictures of all the activities. She was always around, of course except in the sleeping quarters and men's bathrooms, but she was a complete mystery to him.
He planned on asking Dr Erskine if he knew anything about her. He would ask other soldiers, but he didn't feel like being teased any more than he was.
He didn't see Dr Erskine however until the night before he was to be experimented on. He was nervous to ask, but what really is the harm in asking?
"Dr Erskine, umm... Do you know anything about y/n?"
"Ah y/n... Yes. The Colonel and her grandmother are close friends. Their kids do stuff together all the time with them and their grandkids, so y/n is basically like his granddaughter. She wants to go into photography, and the Colonel gave her a chance here cataloging everything that goes on around the base. In fact she's supposed to be there for your experiment tomorrow."
Steve nodded still wanting to know more.
"It seems all the soldiers fancy her, but she's very oblivious. Maybe you'll have better chances." Dr Erskine raised his eyebrows, and Steve laughed.
"I'm terrible at making connections."
"Don't be so hard on yourself. Now, get some rest. You have a big day tomorrow."
The next day Steve made it to where he was to be experimented on. He walked down the stairs noticing Dr Erskine talking to y/n. When Erskine noticed, he told y/n, and she turned around smiling at Steve.
She walked over to him extending her hand for him to shake. He shook her hand, and he realized she had a firm grip.
"Hi. I'm y/n l/n. You must be Steve. Dr Erskine has told me good things about you."
Steve wasn't sure what to say. He felt his cheeks heat up, and he just nodded.
"Do you mind if I fix your outfit and your hair?" She asked.
"No..."
She gently began fixing his outfit making sure the smallest details were correct. She then tilted his hat slightly, and fixed his hair.
"Wonderful. Can you move to the machine?"
Steve did as she said, and y/n began to take pictures. She smiled, and Steve found himself smiling as well.
"Dr Erskine, can you come over here so I can get your picture with Steve?"
After she asked, she turned back to Steve, and he thought she winked at him. Erskine walked over, and she continually took pictures.
"Thank you both." She looked to Erskine and nodded. Steve watched as the Dr walked away. He then looked back to y/n.
"I just want to let you know that you're already so amazing and wonderful. I'll see you in a minute Steve." She kissed his cheek and backed away.
Steve underwent the experiment successfully, and now he felt so different. Then, a man moved closer to everyone.
Steve was confused to see y/n staring the man down. She looked as if she was debating in her mind what to do. All the sudden, an explosion went off, but it seemed to be contained growing smaller and smaller. Steve noticed the man pull out a gun, but before he could move, the gun was fired.
Everyone, other than Dr Erskine, Colonel Phillips, and the Stark man were shocked when they saw y/n. Her hands were both extended. One was outstretched in the direction of the explosion, and the other held the bullet that was near inches from hitting the Dr.
She still stared at the man, and he was about to reach for the last bit of serum. She moved both her hands in the direction of the man, and he was shoved against the wall. Before she could do anything else, the man fell to the floor and foam came out of his mouth.
She ran to him and kneeled down. "He's dead. Cyanide. Dr Erskine, I... I think you know why he was here."
"Hydra."
She nodded and Steve watched men take away the supposed secret agent. Then he was about to ask how she could do all those things when the flash of her camera seemed to blind the entire room.
Steve woke up to realize he was lying in bed. Dr Erskine was sitting beside the bed, and he handed Steve a glass of water.
"Your operation went very well. Everyone was impressed, and we will begin to see the extent of the operation. How are you feeling?"
"I feel different, and I'm a little hungry."
"Alright. I could see if y/n can get you something of base."
Steve felt very confused about everything. He remembered Erskine, y/n, and the others being there. He remembered the photos and going through the pain of the experimentation. Then, he felt like there was something missing about it all. When he tried to remember, it only gave him a headache.
Erskine got up and patted Steve's shoulder. Steve got up and looked out the window not seeing much other than the trees. Then he heard the door open.
He turned around noticing y/n. She smiled, and he slowly walked over to her.
"I just ran into Dr Erskine. He told me you were a bit hungry. Thankfully Mr Phillips lets me go off base anytime I want, and he's letting me take you off base today. Do you want to eat anything in particular?"
"I don't know."
She opened the door motioning him to follow. "There's this nice market not to far from here. We can get food there and have a picnic at this lake I found."
Steve blushed, and he couldn't help but ask. "Are you asking me out on a date?"
"Well Steve Rogers, I guess I am."
Steve smiled, and his cheeks had become even more red. "Alright then."
Long after, Steve sat with y/n by the lake eating lunch. He was having a wonderful time, but he felt like something was bothering y/n.
He was shocked when she reached out and grabbed his hand. He didn't let go, and he actually squeezed her hand.
"Steve... I... I need to tell you something, and I trust that you won't tell anyone."
"Okay." He nodded his head and promised not to tell whatever she was about to say.
"The day of your experiment there was a man there meant to steal the serum used for you. He... He was apart of this organization Hydra. He... He tried to blow up the observatory area, and he fired a gun that was going to hit Dr Erskine."
She paused rubbing her temples before continuing.
"I stopped them both, the bullet and explosion. Everyone saw it happen, but I wiped everyone's mind who didn't have on sunglasses. One of them was you. I... I have powers. I... I would feel awful if I never told you the truth because I really like you. I've liked you since the first day you got on the base. I'm so sorry... I'm not supposed to tell anyone."
She began to cry, and Steve enveloped her in a hug.
"Dr Erskine, Mr Phillips, and Howard are the only ones other than my family that know about my powers. They wanted me to erase everyone's memory of me using my powers to protect myself. Now you know too. It's the only thing I've lied to you about. Everything else is true, and I really do want to be a photographer."
Steve rubbed her back and comforted her as best as he could. Soon she wrapped her arms around his shoulders. Her cries subsided, and she rested her head on his chest.
"I believe you. I promise I believe you, and I won't tell anyone. You can trust me."
"Thank you. It means a lot to me."
He didn't let go, and he rested his head on top of hers. "Y/n, I've liked you since we first met too."
She pulled away with a single tear slipping down her cheek.
"Really?"
"Really."
Steve didn't know if it was an effect of the serum, but he found a new self confidence. He brushed her hair behind her ear, and he gently pulled her to him. He kissed her softly and she kissed him back.
They pulled apart, and y/n stared into his eyes. She sighed and quickly kissed him again.
"Thank you for trusting me with your secret y/n."
"Of course. Now, as much as I've enjoyed our picnic, I need to get you back to the base."
Steve then kissed her as they got ready to go back to their temporary home. He couldn't believe everything that had happened to him, and now he had the girl that he'd had a crush on for almost over a year.
I hope you enjoyed that. I know I don't really mention it during the story, but there are time skips during. It obviously didn't happen all in one day eheh. Also I apologize for my titles. I'm good at the story part, but I never know what to title them. Then I take like five minutes trying to find a good title name so yeah. That's for all my imagine books 😂 anyways...
Thanks for reading Steve's Sunshines.
