The Lake.
"Just a few more steps. That's it, no peeking!"
Stephanie stood on what she thought was grass, her eyes covered with Matthew's hands as he led her to whatever mysterious surprise he had set up. Impatient, she bounced on the balls of her feet – part of her desperate to know what her husband had hidden up his sleeve. They'd driven in the car for about thirty minutes as far as she could tell and they had walked a decent way to get to this exact spot. Whatever he had to show her, it was obvious he had been planning this for a while as she didn't walk into a tree or a rock at all. Not that Matthew would ever do that deliberately but he would sometimes miss key details, hence why they worked together on theories. She could see things he could not and vice versa.
They had been working on scripts that morning yet something had seemed amiss with Matthew. Normally he was quite good at focusing on scripts, his strong work ethic shining through but this time he fidgeted. His typing would turn from methodical to agitated and he would start to tap rhythms on the side of his keyboard as he looked around impatiently. What he had been looking for was completely beyond Stephanie's understanding. Every so often she would look up from her Film Theory script and shoot a glare her husband's way, indicating that he should be quiet. It would work for a while but soon he got bored again and it started all over again.
Chris and Jason hadn't turned up to work yet and it concerned her. Every so often, she would ping a text to each of their phones asking about their whereabouts but she received nothing in return. She even texted Genev to see if she knew where Jason was but she didn't reply either which was unusual. Normally they texted back and forth quite a bit, just chatting and occasionally joking about their husbands antics. Yet she received nothing. Frowning, Stephanie wandered into the kitchen – looking for her teapot. If the day was going to start off stressful, she might as well enjoy some tea whilst she could. Browsing through her large array of tea bags, she selected one at random and popped it in her cup. Whilst it brewed, she ventured back into the main room in search of Matthew. Since she was standing up, she might as well see if he wanted a Diet Coke.
"Matthew, do you want a Diet Coke? Matthew? Where did that man go?"
The room was empty, the chair that Matthew had been sitting on now empty. She sighed, cursing the universe at its mockery of her. She tried to be nice. Then again, maybe the universe was trying to help her break Matthew of his Diet Coke addiction? Smirking at the thought, she checked behind the doors and under the table, just in case her husband was trying to jump scare her. He was a dork like that. No Matthew in sight. Shrugging, she walked back to the kitchen and was startled to see a thermos sitting on the kitchen counter with her tea inside it and a post-it note on the top of it. It reminded Stephanie of the post-it notes he used to leave for her as encouragement back when they lived in New York. A soft smile crept onto her face as she remembered them fondly, forever grateful that she had kept a hold of them all. The post-it note read:
"We're going on an adventure. Get in the car and bring your tea. Last one there is a rotten egg!"
Giggling at her husband's silly antics, Stephanie grabbed her coat from the hook and her tea from the counter. Checking she still had her phone and purse on her, she closed the back door behind her and walked around to the car. Matthew was already sat in the driver's seat, tapping on the steering wheel and humming a tune as he waited for her. She walked slowly, not wanting to disturb her husband but also wanting to listen to his tuneful humming – she loved his voice. It soothed her when nothing else would. Opening the car door, she climbed into the passenger's seat and placed her tea in the pocket of the door. She turned to Matthew with a smile on her face, gesturing for him to begin whatever adventure he had planned. If this was all an elaborate ruse just for her to come buy Diet Coke or tacos with him, then he was definitely sleeping on the couch that night.
Matthew handed her one of his ties to act as a makeshift blindfold. She raised her eyebrows at him for a moment, wondering what the heck he had planned that involved her not being able to see that wasn't downright creepy. Sighing, she stuck her tongue out at Matthew in response to the rotten egg comment on the post-it note and put the tie over her eyes. The brightness of the sunshine was muted by the orange tie and she was sure she looked ridiculous wearing it. Feeling around for her tea, she cautiously lifted it to her lips – missing a couple of times and booping herself on the nose. Matthew cackled at her antics, taking a sneaky picture of his wife to use in the future. He started the car, pulling out of the driveway and venturing towards their destination. Thankfully, the traffic wasn't that bad so they made good time. Stephanie managed to avoid spilling tea on herself though did come close a couple of times when they went over speedbumps.
They pulled into their destination, a park on the outskirts of Los Angeles. He helped Stephanie out of the passenger seat, taking her hands in his and pulling her along gently. Their feet crunched across the gravel of the car park in unison, Matthew constantly scanning their path in fear of trap hazards. Stephanie's ears strained, trying to listen to the sounds around her so she could guess where they were but there weren't many clues. A few birds tweeted and the sounds of trees swaying in the breeze were all she could make out over the sound of their footsteps and Matthew's breathing. They moved onto grass and walked for a while, the occasional rustle in the bushes causing Stephanie to grip onto her husband more tightly. Soon they reached where they needed to be and Matthew gently pulled the tie off of her face with one hand, covering her eyes with his other hand.
"Ready? 3, 2, 1."
Stephanie squinted into the bright sunlight, her eyes taking a moment to adjust to the stark change in lighting. As everything came back into focus, her eyes settled on the small picnic blanket that was set up in front of her. Their travel bag sat in the centre of the blanket with various tubs of food poking out of the top of it, alongside an obvious bottle of Diet Coke and a ginger beer bottle for her. A small bouquet of flowers lay on the edge of the blankets, the white lilies almost glowing in the bright sunlight. Her hands went to her face in joy and shock, amazed at what her husband had managed to set up without her knowing about it. Curious about where they were, she dragged her gaze upwards, stopping still as she stared at the beautiful scenery in front of her.
They were by a lake. The lake itself was not massively large, you could probably walk around it in the space of an hour but it was gorgeous. The water reflected the sky above them, the cloud patterns and blue sky slightly twisted by the water into abstract images. Sunlight beamed down across the lake, hitting it at an angle such that the beams acted like a spotlight, highlighting the water for all to see. Small families of ducks and other aquatic birds swam across the water, sending ripples racing across the water. Ducklings followed behind their parents, their high pitched quacking making Stephanie want to take one home just because it was so cute. She wouldn't because it wasn't kind to the animal but the thought was there. A small forest grew by the lake, the green leaves slowly swaying in the breeze. They lined the horizon, the greens and browns standing out against the blue sky.
Turning to her husband, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on the lips, trying to pour everything she loved about him into that one act of intimacy. Matthew leaned down, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her closer to him. Their lips moved slowly against one another, not wanting to rush this moment together. When they pulled away for oxygen, they both panted for breath as they stared into each other's eyes. Stephanie blushed; normally she wasn't the one who initiated intimacy. Matthew continued to watch her eyes, loving every shade of brown and shimmer of emotion that passed through them. She rested her head on his chest, just enjoying the moment and the breeze blowing through their hair.
"Is this why Chris and Jason weren't in work this morning?"
Chuckling, Matthew nodded in response to her question – not at all surprised at her perceptiveness. She never ceased to amaze him with how insightful and observant she was. Reluctantly, he unwound his arms from around her waist and gestured towards the little picnic they had set up. They needed to eat eventually plus he knew how hungry Stephanie was, her stomach had rumbled on the way over here. They sat down and began pulling out all the food from the basket. They had a variety of treats, including some specially made cookies that Matthew had bought from the bakery. Written on the top of them was My Player Two. Her blush deepened when she read it, pecking him on the cheek before taking a bite of the cookie – unable to resist its chocolatey goodness.
"Where did this all come from? Our anniversary isn't for months! Neither is my birthday! I love this, it's amazing and thoughtful and sweet but I would have never expected anything like this?"
A small flush of pride crept across Matthew's neck as he heard the genuine adoration and affection in his wife's tone. He had planning this for several weeks now, deliberately shuffling around workloads and timetables in order to get everything prepared. It had meant a lot of the thumbnails had been less professional than usual but it was all worth seeing Stephanie smile. He poured her some ginger beer and took some Diet Coke for himself, sipping at it as he watched his wife. She nibbled at the food delicately as if it was all going to vanish if she moved too swiftly. Stuffing a sausage roll into his mouth, Matthew lay down on the picnic blanket and stared up at the blue sky, laughing quietly as some of the cloud patterns morphed into animal shapes in front of his very eyes.
Soon, Stephanie finished munching on her food and lay down to join her husband. She rested her head on his chest, one hand drawing circles on his chest. The other was clasped in one of Matthew's larger hands, her delicate fingers dwarfed by his "manly" hands. Occasionally, she would point out a cloud in the sky and give it a voice, the voices varying from cute like Peepachu's to slightly creepy like Dr Hill's voice from Until Dawn. He would burst out laughing, his chest moving underneath Stephanie but it didn't disturb her comfortable position. It meant that her husband was with her, he was happy and they were together. That was what mattered.
"Some days, I wake up before you. I roll over and see you, curled up in the bed next to Skip and I just stop for a moment. I see your hair splayed across the pillow and your chest rise and fall. You look so beautiful and peaceful in those moments that I forget to breathe for a moment. You literally take my breath away Stephanie, you have since the moment I met you. Why you chose me will forever remain a mystery but when we got married I promised to love you until I die and I will keep that promise. Every day, I love you more and more. I love you more than there are atoms in the universe or reasons to blame Jason. I hope you never forget that because you deserve all the happiness that I can provide you and more."
A tear escaped from the corner of Stephanie's eye as she listened to the end of Matthew's little speech. She didn't have the words to express how she felt at that moment; her adoration for this man was too grand for the human language to properly express. Turning, she kissed him on the cheek and then lay back down, not wanting to break the moment. She hummed quietly, allowing the tune to pierce the air and mingle with the sounds of nature around them. Matthew picked up the song quite quickly, turning the humming into singing. His voice was more guttural than normal, deeper and full of emotion that struck Stephanie deep in her bones.
"Cause all of me,
Loves all of you.
Love your curves and all your edges,
All your perfect imperfections."
Stephanie joined in, her higher voice harmonising with Matthew without really trying. Their voices rang out into the park, rising into the sky. It was beautiful and melodic but to an outsider, the true meaning of the song was lost.
"Give your all to me,
I'll give my all to you.
You're my end and my beginning,
Even when I lose I'm winning."
The last two lines of the chorus were sung quietly; to one another as if they were a secret the rest of the world didn't get to know. Their love for one another was evident and strong yet their true adoration was so much deeper than anyone else even got to see.
"Cause I give you all of me,
And you give me all of you."
They smiled as the song ended, savouring the moment and committing it to memory. Neither of them would forget these hours, and these minutes. They lived for one another and there was no better way to show that, than by staring into one another's eyes and loving what they saw there.
"I love you Matthew."
"I love you too Stephanie."
So they both just lay there, dozing off together and just living in the moment, their love burning brighter than ever.
