Chapter 2: Figuring It Out
"Why did Mommy leave?" Knox asked.
"Doesn't she love us?" Amelie asked.
"What's going on?"
"I'm scared."
"Daddy?"
Dallon nodded, his head in his hands. It had been five days since Breezy had left, but it had just sunk in that she wasn't coming back.
Everyone's eyes were red and puffy, especially Dallon's.
"Mommy got a little bit mad at me about some adult stuff." Dallon said, beginning to answer his children's questions. "She...she loved us, just not right now."
Fresh tears rolled down Amelie's cheeks.
"I don't know what's going on, and to be honest, I'm kinda scared too." Dallon said.
"You're scared?" Knox said.
"Yeah, parents can be scared too."
"I'll bet Uncle Ryan's never been scared." Amelie said, mentioning Dallon's bandmate.
"Just cause Ryan dyed his hair doesn't mean he doesn't get scared." Dallon said, finding a small silver lining of humor in the abyss of negative emotions swirling around the small family.
"What are we gonna do without Mommy?" Knox asked.
"Why was Mommy yelling?" Amelie asked.
"We'll figure it out, guys." Dallon said. "I promise we'll figure this out."
The kids nodded slowly.
"Amelie, Knox, c'mere." Dallon said, opening his arms.
The kids ran to him, curling up in his arms.
"It's gonna be okay, I promise." Dallon whispered comfortingly, rocking them back and forth. "It's gonna be okay."
After a while, Dallon pulled the kids away from himself. "Hey, how about we go to that park down the road? Does that sound fun?"
Knox nodded. "Yeah!"
"Okay." Amelie said.
"Hey, I know that this isn't gonna be fun, but we can have fun even if we don't feel like we want to." Dallon said, grabbing his car keys. "Alright, to the car, soldiers! March!"
The kids giggled, as Dallon made a show of marching to the car, kicking out his legs, his arms flailing at his sides.
Dallon got his kids in the car, making sure they were buckled in. "Is everybody in? Everybody comfy?"
The kids gave him a thumbs up, as Dallon pulled the car out of the driveway.
They got to the park, and Knox instantly ran out of the car, while Amelie sat in her seat.
"Amee, c'mon, honey." Dallon said.
"Do I have to?" She asked.
"You could hang out with me, and there's barley anyone here, honey." Dallon said.
Amelie sighed. "Okay."
"That's my girl."
Dallon carried Amelie to where the swing set was, setting her down. "If you feel like it, I can push you on that."
Amelie looked over. "Okay." She sat down on the swing, Dallon pushing her.
"There you go, Amee!" He said, as she began swinging on her own. "Where's your brother?"
She shrugged.
"KNOX!" Dallon called.
"DADDY!" Knox called, waving from the top of the slide.
"Hi!"
Knox waved back, sliding down.
Dallon smiled a little. Maybe life without Breezy wouldn't be that hard.
"DADDY!" Amelie screamed.
Dallon whirled around, seeing his daughter dangling of the monkey bars by one hand.
"DADDY!" Knox cried.
Dallon saw that Knox had fallen into some gravel. "HOLD ON, BUD!"
"DADDY THERE'S BLOOD!" He screamed.
"DADDY I'M SLIPPING!" Amelie cried out.
Dallon ran to his daughter first, trying to get past other family.
"Daddy!" Amelie yelled.
"I'm here, sweetheart." Dallon said, helping his daughter down, threw her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, and ran to his son.
"Hey, buddy." Dallon said. "Oh jeez, of course this happens today."
Knox looked up from his bloody knee. "It hurts."
"I know, Knox, I know." Dallon sighed. "Okay, there's a water fountain over here, we'll wash it off then rap it up."
"The bleeding's not that bad, Daddy." Amelie said.
"Well, we're still gonna do the plan cause I made it up." Dallon said, picking Knox up. "Amelie, stay right behind me, I'm not losing you."
"Like how I lost your mother." He wanted to add, but talking about Breezy to his kids was the last thing he wanted to do.
Dallon washed off Knox's knee, finding out that the scrape wasn't as bad as he'd thought.
"Do you guys wanna go home, or stay here?" He asked.
"Stay!" Knox exclaimed.
"I wanna swing more." Amelie said.
"Okay," Dallon said, as he put Band-Aids on his son's knee. "Have fun, kiddos!"
Amelie and Knox ran off, to go play, leaving Dallon standing there watching.
He thought over all the things that was going on in his family's life, and how he was supposed to make it as normal as possible.
Dallon smiled a little, watching Amelie push her brother on the swing, talking about their favorite TV show.
He only wanted the best for his children. He had always said he'd give them the stars if he could, and that was the last thing they were having now.
"Daddy?"
Dallon looked over, seeing his son waving at him. "Yeah?"
"C'mere!"
He walked over, kneeling down to get eye level with Knox. "What's up, bud?"
"You look sad."
Dallon smiled, ruffling his son's hair. "I'm okay, little man, don't worry."
Knox furrowed his eyebrows. "Are you sure?"
'I want to curl up in a ball and cry for a f--king week.' Dallon wanted to say, but he kept his smile for his son. "I'm sure, Knox, I'm okay."
Amelie came over to her dad. "Daddy! Help me on the monkey bars!"
"Okay, honey, I'm coming!" Dallon said, looking back at Knox. He looked just like his mother, making the grown man's heart break all over again.
"Daddy, what's wrong?" Knox asked.
"Nothing, bud, you just...you look so much like your mom."
Knox smiled. "Mommy's really pretty."
"Yeah, she is." Dallon said, not wanting to talk about his now ex wife. "I'm gonna help Amee on the monkey bars, okay?"
"Okay, Daddy!"
Dallon began to walk over to where his daughter was, trying his best to keep the tears from running down his cheeks.
'Be brave for the kids, Dal, do it for the kids.' He thought over and over again, as he watched Amelie climb on the playground.
(I didn't proofread and I promise the chapters will get less depressing :)
