Chapter 12: We've Barely Moved In
(I don't normally add like pictures and stuff to go with these chapters, but I found that on Google and just haaaaad to use it lol)
"If I have to carry another damn box, I am gonna lose my flipping mind." Brendon muttered, dropping the heavy box of books by the bookshelf, stretching so he could pop his back.
"We have a few more, honey, it'll be okay." Dallon said, setting two boxes down, not knowing where to put them. "Where are the kids?"
"Knox is in the kitchen eating his leftover fries, and Amelie is somewhere and she has your phone."
"Why does she have my phone?"
"Cause I didn't want her under our feet, and she wanted it?" Brendon said, biting his lip. "Was I not supposed to do that?"
Dallon thought for a moment, scanning the ceiling as if it had the answet written on it. "Yeah I guess it's fine, she's probably just playing Candy Crush or something."
"You have Candy Crush? Really?" Brendon asked as they walked back out to the car, picking up another box.
"I got it for her, don't be all extra about it." Dallon said, rolling his eyes. "The worst she can do is call someone, or nine-one-one, which hopefully doesn't happen."
"At least she knows how to do both." Brendon said, setting the boxes on the floor, sighing. "Well, finally, that's the last of them."
"Yep, we did it, we'll unpack tomorrow." Dallon sighed, flopping on the couch, pulling Brendon on top of him which made the younger man burst into a small fit of giggles, their noses touching each other's.
"Are you sure we're not moving too fast with this?" Brendon asked, placing his hands on Dallon's chest, tilting his head to the side a little.
"I don't think so...what do you think?"
"I think it's going perfectly." Brendon said before kissing his boyfriend, smiling against his lips, his eyes fluttering closed. Dallon smiled also, kissing back as he wrapped his arms around Brendon, pulling him closer.
They both broke away quickly as they heard Amelie shriek from upstairs, rushing down to the lower floor with a huge grin on her face.
"Hey, kiddo, what's up?" Brendon asked, trying to fix his hair the best he could.
"Mr. Knight is coming over!" Amelie said excitedly, bouncing up and down.
Dallon blinked a few times, looking at his daughter. "Honey, what're you talking about? I said he might be able to come over at some point, but not today."
Amelie frowned, then smiled again. "But he said he'll come over today..."
Brendon and Dallon both looked at each other, trying to figure out what to do. "Did...did you call him and ask?"
"Yep! He said Mr. Wood could come too!"
"Oh gosh..." Dallon muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. "We've barely moved in and people are already coming to the house..."
"We'll be okay, we just gotta tidy up really quick before they get here, baby." Brendon said, rubbing Dallon's shoulder. "You call those guys up, I'll run these things upstairs."
"Amee, sweetheart, we need to have a conversation about inviting people over before talking to us." Dallon said, pulling Amelie onto his lap. "Dad and I have to be prepared for stuff like this...see, the house is a mess."
"But the house is usually a mess...that's what makes it our house." Amelie said, kicking her legs a little since they were a few inches above the floor. "Mr. Knight's office was always messy, so he won't mind."
"Who's comin' over?" Knox asked, walking into the room.
"My teachers!" His older sister exclaimed.
Knox nodded, looking up at Brendon. "Is Amee in trouble?"
"No, bud, she isn't in trouble." Brendon replied, picking Knox up, bouncing him on his knee.
"But...but last time Mr. Geoff came over was cause I was doing bad in class..."
"Knox, you were a little behind in some things, that doesn't mean you were bad." Dallon said gently, ruffling his son's hair. "But now you're all caught up, buddy, and Mr. Geoff says you're the top of the class!"
Knox grinned. "Yep I'm smart!"
"Hell yeah you are! I mean heck!" Brendon said, kissing the top of the little boy's head.
Dallon had his phone out, quickly texting Amelie's old teacher, hoping he had decided to either not show up, or was running late.
"Oh hey, Dallon, yeah we're on our way, sorry it took so long, Geoff didn't know we were gonna head over so we had to wait for him to get ready. We should be there in a few minutes." He read, wincing a little.
"Babe? Is everything okay?" Brendon asked, looking at his boyfriend worriedly.
"Yeah, just they said they're gonna be there in a few minutes, so I'm kinda inwardly panicking." Dallon replied, setting Amelie down on the couch. "Okay, I'll run stuff up to our room, Bren, you go take a shower, then by the time I take a shower also we should be fine and they'll be here."
"And if not I'll answer the door and be a distraction!" Amelie exclaimed.
"That's plan B." Dallon said before picking a few boxes up, carrying them upstairs, his smaller boyfriend dashing up to his room to get in the shower. He tried to think of on a scale of one to ten how badly this whole situation could go, and at the moment his paranoia had him at a seven and a half.
"I think we need to ban Amelie from calling people." Brendon called, hearing the older man drop a few more boxes on the floor.
"Agreed." Dallon said, panting a little. "I left some of the boxes downstairs that have books in them, do you think that'll be okay?"
"Yeah, they'd have to be real assholes to just point it out and make it a big deal." Brendon said, stepping out of the shower. "Get on in there, I'll-"
They both heard the doorbell go off, Amelie shrieking loudly.
"I have to meet their teachers..." he muttered to himself, pulling his shirt on, trying to dry out his hair a bit. "I mean, yeah they're moving a grade up in a while, but still!"
"Bren, baby, it's all gonna be okay, they're really chill I promise." Dallon said, kissing Brendon before getting in the shower. "Just go say hi and make some conversation, they'll probably lead it."
Brendon nodded, going back down the stairs, sighing softly as he reached the hallway, smiling a little.
There was a bright green haired man kneeling on the floor in front of Amelie, smiling widely at her. Brendon guessed he was Mr. Knight, or also known as "the highlighter". Next to him was a curly haired guy, also who was kneeling on the floor, a baseball cap covering a lot of his long hair which was down to his shoulders.
The last one was standing up, but was listening to Knox talk, nodding along to what the little boy was saying, his messy blonde/brown hair getting into his face as he moved his head.
"I've missed you sooooooo much, Mr. Knight! I miss preschool a ton." Amelie was saying, grinning at her old teacher.
"I've missed you too, munchkin." Awsten said, grinning back at her.
"Hey, what about me, don't you like my class, Amelie?" Otto asked.
Amelie gasped a little, nodding vigorously. "I love your class, Mr. Wood! You both are my favorite teachers in the whole wide world! I don't wanna go to first grade."
"Aw, Amelie, you'll still see us! I promise to drop in and see you in class, okay? Me and Awsten will sneak in as much as possible." Otto said, laughing as he saw the little girl beaming before she hugged him tightly. "Haha, I got the first hug, I win, Awsten."
Awsten rolled his eyes, standing up to see Brendon standing there. "Oh hey, I don't think I've met you before, I'm Awsten, or Mr. Knight, but just call whatever you'd like." He said, smiling at the older man in front of him.
"Hi, I'm Brendon, and Amelie has told me a ton about you." Brendon replied. "I hear she was the one who invited you over?"
Awsten nodded, laughing a little. "Yeah, funny story, Otto and I were just hanging around doing nothing, and then this little munchkin called me and asked for us to come over."
"For the record!" Otto called from across the room, who was currently holding a laughing Amelie upside down, swinging her back and forth. "We did ask if it was okay with Dallon, and she said yes. So it wasn't like we were just barging in here."
Brendon raised his eyebrows, turning back to Awsten. "He didn't give her permission, she just really missed you."
Awsten's eyes widened a bit, Geoff turning around. "Oh shit, I'm so sorry for surprising you like that."
"No no no, it's okay, you're already here and everything, so don't worry about it." Brendon said, giving Awsten and Geoff a reassuring smile. "I promise it's fine."
Geoff nodded before going over to talk to Brendon also. "Hey, so not to be the one to ask the weird questions, but are you one of Dallon's friends?" He asked, feeling Knox tugging at his pant leg, looking down at him.
"Nuh uh, that's Dad!" Knox informed his teacher, going over to hug Brendon.
"I'm Dallon's boyfriend." Brendon said, filling in what Knox was trying to say.
"Oh okay that's cool!" Geoff said. "I'm just glad his ex isn't still here cause she was a pain in the-"
"GEOFF!" Otto shouted, giving him a look. "Kids, remember, I only have to go over this with Awsten, I sure as heck shouldn't be going over it with you."
Brendon smiled a little, looking down at the floor. As bad as it sounded, he somewhat liked it when people agreed that Dallon's ex was terrible, sure to give her credit she was for a while a decent mother to the kids, but other than that, he agreed with Geoff that she was a huge pain.
"Mr. Geoff, do you wanna see the Lego set I've been working on?" Knox asked, reaching up to hold his teacher's hand, gazing up at him.
Geoff smiled, nodding as the little boy pulled him into the living room, Awsten following since he was interested also, Amelie chasing him, climbing up his back dangling off his neck.
"How's Amelie doing in school?" Brendon asked, leaning against the stairwell.
"Oh she's doing just awesome, she's really talkative, I'll tell you that, but the rest of the class like her." Otto said, fixing his hat. "She's a great kid, and she's doing great in a lot of her classes, lacking in a few but that's totally normal."
"Which ones?"
"Just English, she's having some trouble with reading, just the focusing part, and she occasionally mixes up words."
Brendon nodded, but jumped a bit as someone touched his shoulder, relaxing as he recognized the person as his boyfriend. "Hey, babe."
"Hey, baby, and hi...um..." Dallon said, biting his lip as he looked at Amelie's teacher.
"Otto."
"Right, Otto, hi, nice to see you again." He said, smiling at him. "How're you doing?"
"I'm great, just working on grading a few things for school, preparing for the kids' graduation, all that fun stuff. How are you?"
"I'm good, and how's all that planning going?" Dallon asked, wrapping his arms around Brendon's waist, resting his head on his shoulder.
"It's definitely keeping me busy, and I'm gonna miss my class a ton, but other than that it's going pretty well, Aws was helping me earlier before Amelie called us over." Otto said, laughing a little, twisting a piece of his hair around his finger.
"Yeah, sorry about that, she kinda did that out on a whim without asking." Dallon said, chuckling softly but nervously.
"Don't worry about it, we were just passing around ideas, so we weren't really busy at all." Otto said, looking over at Awsten, who was shuffling over, Amelie dangling off his leg, giggling.
"Otto, I can't walk." The green haired man said, pointing to the little girl.
"Amee, are you trying to trip Mr. Knight?" Otto asked, prying her off of his friend, picking her up. "Hey, I've got a great idea."
Amelie grinned, wrapping her arms around his neck. "What is it?"
"Y'know how you said on our call you wanted to climb trees?"
"Otto, last time we did this we had to call the fire department." Awsten muttered.
"It wasn't my fault I got stuck." Otto replied before getting cut off by Amelie.
"We gonna go climb trees!?" She asked, cheering as the two guys nodded.
"Be careful!" Brendon called, leaning back against Dallon as he heard the door shut. "Those guys are cool."
"Yeah, they're awesome." Dallon said, kissing his boyfriend's cheek softly. "The kids love them, Knox has told me multiple times he only likes school cause of Geoff."
"Aw, that's sweet." Brendon said, sighing contently as Dallon ran his fingers through his hair. "Babe? Should I make food or something?"
"Nah, we'll just order pizza, it's way easier."
Brendon nodded, glancing out the window, seeing Awsten and Amelie halfway up a tree, Otto on the ground supervising. "Otto said that Amee is having trouble with some reading."
"She always has, just slight dyslexia, but it's not too serious." Dallon replied. "Also maybe slight ADD or ADHD, but just Awsten told me that after her first day of preschool."
"Was she that energetic?"
"You know it, she used to give Awsten and Otto a good workout from running all over campus to catch her."
Brendon laughed, imagining the little girl making two adults chase after her. "Sounds like something she would do."
Dallon nodded, seeing that Amelie was swinging back and forth on a branch, obviously laughing as she did so, Otto standing there, ready to catch her at any moment in case she would fall, meanwhile Awsten was dangling upside down by his knees above Amelie, talking to her about something the other two adults couldn't hear.
There was a sudden loud crash from the living room, followed by a small cry from Knox. Brendon and Dallon both rushed in, seeing the broken Lego set pieces all over the floor.
"I worked so hard on it..." He said, rubbing his eyes furiously, Geoff sitting next to him, pulling the little boy onto his lap.
"Hey, we can fix it, I'll help you okay? You go get the instruction sheet, and I'll start sorting the pieces. Deal?" The older man offered, smiling as Knox nodded.
"What happened?" Dallon asked, sitting down on the floor.
"Oh, he just ran by and kinda whacked it on his way." Geoff replied. "Normal kid stuff, but he didn't bust it too hard."
Brendon and Dallon both nodded, starting to help sort the pieces. "So, we were thinking we could order pizza and stuff, is that okay?" Dallon asked.
"Sounds cool to me! Where's Otto and Awsten by the way?"
"They're climbing a tree with Amelie."
"Why am I not surprised." Geoff said, the corners of his lips quirking up into a small smile.
"Got it!" Knox announced, dropping the Lego set sheet on the floor, crawling into Geoff's lap.
"Okay, buddy, let's start working okay? Maybe we can finish it before the pizza comes." His teacher said, flipping a few pages in the booklet.
"We're getting pizza?" Knox asked excitedly, bouncing up and down.
"Yeah bud! We're getting pizza later!"
Brendon grinned, leaning back on Dallon again. "Honestly, I think Amee calling the guys was a pretty good thing after all."
"Y'know what? I think you might be right." Dallon said, kissing the top of Brendon's head. "Remind me if we ever wanna go on a date, we should ask these three to come over."
"Noted."
