Chapter 1: Why?
Dallon kissed his wife, as he got out of bed.
"Hm?" She murmured, rolling back over.
"Hi, Breezy, go back to sleep." Dallon said softly.
Breezy nodded, closing her eyes.
Dallon walked down the hallway as quietly as he could, poking his head into his son's room.
"Hey, Knox!"
Knox looked up. "Hi, Daddy!"
Dallon grinned, seeing his young son's happy face. "Hey, bud, what're you doing up so early?"
"It not early!"
"Knox, it's seven AM."
"Not early." Knox insisted.
"Okay, okay, you wanna help me make breakfast?" Dallon asked.
Knox nodded, making grabby hands at his dad.
"Okay, c'mere!" Dallon said, picking his son up. "Should we go get Amelie?"
Knox nodded. "Yeah!"
"Shh, we gotta be quiet for Mommy." Dallon whispered.
"Kay." Knox whispered back.
Dallon opened his daughter's bedroom door, peeking inside. "Psst! Amelie?"
Amelie put her coloring book down. "Daddy!"
"Shhh!" Knox exclaimed, putting his finger over his lips. "Mommy sleep!"
"Okay." Amelie said with an eyeroll. "I'm hungry."
"I'm about to make breakfast, wanna help me?" Dallon asked.
Amelie nodded, picking up her coloring book and crayons.
"Alright, troops, downstairs we go!" Dallon said, holding Amelie's hand with his free arm.
A while later, Amelie was sitting at the kitchen table coloring, while Knox watched Dallon make pancakes.
"Chocolate!" The little boy exclaimed.
"I already added chocolate!" Dallon said, smiling.
"More!" Knox exclaimed.
Amelie looked up from what she had been drawing. "Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Can you add blueberries to mine?"
"I'll see if we have any, Amee." Dallon said, looking in the refrigerator.
"Do we have any?" Amelie asked, trying to peer into the fridge.
"It's your lucky day, Miss. Weekes!" Dallon said dramatically, making his daughter giggle. "We have a carton of blueberries with your name on it!"
"Is my name really on there?" Amelie asked.
Dallon winked at her. "It's a secret."
Amelie giggled again, as her mother walked downstairs.
"Hey, babe!" Dallon said. "Good morning, Mrs. Weekes!"
Breezy gave him a small smile. "Why're you doing voices again?"
"Sorry, I was being goofy for the kids." Dallon said. "I'll talk normal now."
"Well, I don't want the kids thinking their father's crazy." Breezy said.
"Right, no crackpot dads here." Dallon said.
Everyone suddenly heard a loud scream, and they whirled around to see Knox crying, holding his hand.
"Oh no, buddy, what's wrong?" Dallon asked.
"Mm...my hand!" Knox sobbed. "I...I...I burn it."
"How'd you burn it?" Amelie asked.
"Pan." Knox said, pointing to the frying pan that the pancakes were in.
"I'm so sorry, buddy, I'll get some ice." Dallon said. "Babe, watch the pancakes for me."
"Dallon, I need to go to work!" Breezy said.
"It's Saturday, Breezy, and please help me out this one time."
"I DO HELP!"
Dallon and the kids jumped at Breezy's yell.
"Mommy?" Amelie whimpered.
"Breezy, please not in front of the kids." Dallon pleaded.
"I DON'T CARE IF I YELL IN FRONT OF THEM! IT'LL TEACH THEM TO GET THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE CLOUDS FOR ONCE!" Breezy screamed.
"Breezy," Dallon said. "You can scream at me all you'd like, but please don't scream in front of the kids, our kids."
Breezy took a deep breath. "You think I'm not good enough for you, huh?"
"Breezy, what are you talking about?" Dallon asked.
"You always act like I don't do anything! You're never here! You're always doing something with your stupid band!"
"Mommy." Knox said in a tiny voice. "You scaring me."
Breezy turned on him, her eyes full of hate. "I don't care if I scare you."
Dallon yanked his kids away from his wife, pulled them close, and clamped his hands over their ears. "No one talks to my kids that way."
"THEY'RE NOT YOUR KIDS!" Breezy screamed.
"YOU DON'T ACT LIKE THEIR MOTHER!" Dallon yelled back. "They're always asking me about their mom and where she is! I left to do a concert, and you left them! YOU LEFT MY CHILDREN ALONE IN THE F--KING HOUSE!"
Breezy and Dallon glared at each other for a second, until they both realized the kids were trembling.
"Hey, hey, it's okay." Dallon whispered, giving each of them a kiss.
"You're yelling." Amelie said.
"I know, sweetheart, I'm just a little mad right now."
"You mad at me?" Knox asked.
"No, buddy, I'd never be mad at you." Dallon said.
"YOU'RE NOT PREPARING THEM FOR THE REAL WORLD!" Breezy screamed. "YOU'RE FILLING THEIR HEADS WITH ALL SORTS OF SH-T!"
Dallon held the kids close to his chest. "YOU'RE FULL OF SH-T!"
Breezy sighed. "I'm leaving."
"What?"
"I'm leaving."
"Breezy...what? Why?"
"I can't do this anymore."
"You're my wife! These are our kids!" Dallon said. "Breezy, please don't leave us."
Breezy didn't even glance at Dallon. "If I was so out of it, then you'll do a much better job at being their parent."
"Breezy."
"Bye, Dallon." Breezy said, as she handed him her wedding ring, and walked out the front door.
Dallon didn't even pretend that it was going to be okay, he just began crying, alongside his kids, holding onto them like they were the last stable things in his life because in a way, they were.
