Chapter 4
"It's too hard!" Yeosang whined, grabbing onto his Mother's shoulder to steady himself.
"Don't worry. You'll soon overcome it. Just stay focused and take breaths."
Yeosang slowly nodded, moving the curtain a bit and peeking out the window to where Jongho was out on the yard building some form of contraption that Yeosang didn't care about.
He had been there for nearly half an hour looking out the window and he thought his heart was about to burst with how fast it was beating. Really unhealthy but what did he care?
All he wanted was to get over his syndrome.
"I think I should give up and just live with this," Yeosang sighed, walking over to a sofa and settling down. "I'll never be able to stay conscious anyway."
"Don't say that. Why don't we explain your situation to him? What if he could possibly help in a way we didn't think of?" Mrs Kang asked, hoping that they could try other options on how to cure the syndrome.
"He doesn't need to know. I'll try from here and when I can finally stop fainting every time I see him, then you can bring him closer," Yeosang stated, making sure his answer was firm.
And so the task of trying not to faint commenced. Yeosang didn't even know why he was trying so hard. He would be going back to the university in a little over a month and he would have no one to faint at the sight of.
Nearing the ending of the first month, Yeosang couldn't take it anymore. He had been trying so hard he ended up fainting three times in one day. Much more than he had done in several years. And to make it worse, he felt as if his heart would explode any second.
It was always palpitating even when he wasn't looking at Jongho. That's how hard he tried. To the point where his heart would randomly speed up.
"I think I might get heart disease," Yeosang sighed as he swirled the water in his glass cup. "Oh this will be great. I'll get heart disease AND I'll never stop fainting. Absolutely peachy."
Mrs Kang watched her son with hurt. Hurt because she couldn't help her son and hurt because the cure seemed so easy yet so difficult to carry out. She didn't want her son doing all of the steps in order to break his syndrome but she also didn't want him living the lifestyle forever so in the end, she begrudgingly accepted the fact that her son might someday carry out the act of copulation with the neighbour.
Scary for a Mother to think of really.
"Maybe you should take a break," Mrs Kang suggested, not wanting Yeosang to overdo himself.
"No. I'll do it until I stop fainting and then after that, I can live with dizziness."
Yeosang was determined. He was ready to prove to everyone that he was capable of staying conscious no matter how beautiful something, or someone, was. He would ensure he would be able to stay conscious by the time he started heading back to the university which would be in around roughly a month's time.
The only problem, the task was way too difficult to overcome by himself and he was getting nowhere. All he knew was that his heart would speed up and his mind would go fuzzy at random times. Mayhaps he was getting damaged or mayhaps it was because his brain would randomly bring up the neighbour's face at unnecessary times.
Yeosang didn't understand how Jongho was always outside messing around. The amount of time spent outside was astronomical and Yeosang thought that he was crazy. But he simultaneously thought that the neighbour was doing him a favour by keeping in sight at all times so he didn't complain.
On a rather fine day at the beginning of the final month, Yeosang decided he would go for a walk to clear his brain. He didn't want to look outside the window all day anymore and instead decided it would be good to refresh his brain.
His mind was at peace and he aimlessly walked around his neighbourhood with his earphones in. He didn't want any thoughts occupying his mind but he couldn't help but subconsciously drift off thinking of his neighbour. He didn't like it but it seemed that he had spent so much time staring at him, his brain suddenly had his facial image as a default.
"Choi Jongho," Yeosang suddenly sighed out loud. "Black hair, a bit taller than me, apparently strong as fuck, seems to like outdoors, hard-working, the perfect son. What an amazing human and to know my brain thinks he's a masterpiece? Utterly horrifying."
Yeosang kept muttering things to himself about the male, not watching where he was going until he bumped into someone's back. Irritation seeped into him and he didn't know if he wanted to punch the figure in front of him for being in his way even though he was the one who wasn't looking or, punch himself for not looking.
"Watch it," Yeosang snapped, knowing full well it was his fault.
The figure turned and Yeosang's insides went cold.
"Oh, I'm sorry I stopped walkin- Yeosang?"
"Jongh-"
Yeosang felt himself go limp upon making eye contact with the person and once again, as he had done before, he fell against the male's chest as his brain went cloudy. The male fought to stay conscious even though it was extremely challenging and just hoped he wouldn't fully pass out and have to be carried all the way home. How embarrassing to be carried by the neighbour just because his brain couldn't handle his beauty and even more embarrassing if Jongho had heard him muttering things about him.
Ignoring the fact that he was about to pass out for a second, Yeosang took that opportunity to use his limp state to feel the chest underneath his hands. He could simply pretend that almost unconscious him didn't know what was happening.
He was surprised to feel a hard chest and even more surprised to find it feeling quite muscular under his fingers. He liked it.
Liked it? Yeosang wanted to whack himself once he realized how satisfied he was feeling by the muscle under his hands and with great difficulty, slowly pushed himself off of the male's chest.
"Are you okay?" Jongho asked, filled with concern.
"I'm fine. I just got a bit dizzy," Yeosang muttered, still amazed by what he felt.
How old was Jongho anyway? He wanted to know.
"How old are you?" Yeosang suddenly asked, ensuring that he wouldn't look at the male.
Jongho didn't seem to mind the random question and instead answered as he carefully let go of the older male, ensuring he wouldn't collapse again.
"I'm about to turn nineteen. I'm currently eighteen."
Yeosang was a bit shocked. He didn't expect the male to be younger. If anything, he figured they were the same age or mayhaps the male was a year older. He couldn't believe he was younger and had such muscle and here he was, a whole ass twenty year old with no muscle. He wanted to do something about that but in reality, he was too mentally exhausted to even start.
"Are you going home now?" Jongho asked, tilting his head like a cute puppy and wondering the reason why Yeosang couldn't look at him.
He knew he couldn't look at unique things but he didn't think that he was unique. He just thought that he was a regular everyday person.
"Yup," Yeosang responded, popping the 'P'.
"Can I walk with you?"
Yeosang was taken back. Did this human really want to walk him home knowing that he wouldn't look at him? Did he really want to awkwardly walk home together? Did Yeosang really want to walk side by side knowing his brain thought the younger was beautiful?
Honestly, yes to all.
And so Yeosang found himself walking side by side with the taller male. As expected, it was quiet and Yeosang wasn't sure if he was supposed to start up a conversation. Was he supposed to re-introduce himself and talk about his hobbies?
"Hello my name is Kang Yeosang but you already know that and I like to spend all day staring at you until I nearly pass out. What about you?"
Yeosang shuddered at the thought of saying that. It would set up an awkward barrier if he uttered such words and so he remained quiet until they got home five minutes later.
Yeosang wondered, what was the male doing walking around anyway? Or was he just wasting time as well?
The two awkwardly stood where the paths to their houses separated and Yeosang was uncertain if he should say something. 'I had a nice walk, thank you for walking home with me." Nah, that sounded so cringey and he would want to shoot himself if he said that.
He settled to just turn away and walk inside but his plans on making a run for it were interrupted.
"If you ever think I can somehow help you, feel free to ask," Jongho spoke up, breaking their little awkward bubble. "I don't know what condition you have but mayhaps there's a way I can possibly help."
Yeosang felt touched. No one had ever offered to help him. Not like anyone knew his condition but that was besides the point. He just felt happy that someone wanted to help him and it was the person he fainted for.
Mayhaps he could end up breaking up the curse of fainting and then would settle with getting dizzy instead. It didn't seem so bad to do it that way.
"Well, uh, thank you?" Yeosang awkwardly replied, unsure of what he was supposed to do now.
He rapidly glanced at Jongho's face, not surprised to see the male staring at him and immediately looked away before he would pass out. It seemed the closer they stood, the easier he got dizzy. It was a bit bothersome and unfortunate that he couldn't look at the taller's face for longer.
He couldn't help it. Jongho was pretty but his brain ruined everything. Mayhaps if he didn't have the syndrome he could admit it easier but since that wasn't the case, it seemed as if his mind was forcing opinions on him and he didn't appreciate it. He wanted to admit everything on his own accord.
"See you around I guess or more like I see you around while you avoid eye contact," Jongho chuckled, slowly walking backwards and towards his house.
Yeosang felt himself grow a tad bit red and he mumbled incoherent words, wanting to smack the taller male.
"Yeah, yeah. Let's see."
With that, Yeosang spun on his heel and entered his house, inhaling sharply once he noticed his Mother staring at him with a raised brow.
"So are you trying to get friendly with him? I think it's a good idea."
"No. He was just in my way when I was taking a walk and he followed me home," Yeosang deadpanned, quickly walking past his Mother and up the stairs so he wouldn't have to go into detail on why he was seen with the taller male nor explain what they talked about.
Yeosang rapidly made his way to his room, making sure his door was fully closed before collapsing on his soft mattress with a sigh. Images of the younger flooded his mind and he let out a groan knowing that at this point, it was mostly him denying his feelings.
"But I don't want to like him!" Yeosang whined. "I just want to live a normal and single life but here I am falling for a person I've hardly even spoken to. It's not nice."
The male spent that evening contemplating what he should do about his mixed-up feelings. Ask the neighbour for the help offered or continue suffering and passing out? Living a normal life sounded like a deal but the conditions to get to that point were rather unfavourable.
That night at dinner when his Father tiredly sat eating the food after a long day of work and surgeries and his mother sat anxiously, hoping her cooking was favourable even though Mr Kang had never in his life complained about the food, Yeosang made a decision.
He would ask for help in getting to a better state even if it meant losing some of his pride.
