Chapter 6
"I told Toca I left my watch here," Vance informed. "So we can get inside knowing we have permission."
"Stellar," Perfida respond. "But how do we get in?"
"Don't worry about it, he sent me an OTQR Code (One Time Quick Response) key."
"You really know your stuff, have you done this before?"
"Nope, just someone who reads a lot of mystery books," he answered as he opened the looked door by accessing the QR key in his phone.
"Can I borrow them some of them?"
"Sure, I'm done reading most of them anyway. Now come on, let's go inside, we only have an hour or else the place will automatically lock itself."
The soulpadres entered the VR park and light were on since it was automatic as well, it was like a ghost town now that it would be closed down since the fire "so what are we looking for exactly?" Leyo asked.
"Answers, I mean it's like it didn't want to be in business."
"We should to go to the basement then," Perfida suggested.
"Good idea," Vance answered.
Once they got there, they began searching for anything that could shed some light in their investigation "this is the computer that was turning on its own," Perfida said. "Hmmm... hello, we're here to help."
"Did Hawkes teach you that?"
"Uhm... no, but it's worth the shot, do you know what to do?"
"Nope."
"Purdy, you try calling it."
"Uhm... okay," Perdita approached the monitor. "Hello, it's me again." Lo and behold, the screen lit up but it was just blank.
"Should we asked questions now?" March assumed.
"What do you want?" Perfida asked and nothing. "Sir? Please? Purdy you talk to it."
"What do you want?" Perdita asked the computer, the screen started to change to snow like an old television.
"I think it just work on Perdita," Perfida remarked feeling stunned by it.
"Yup," Vance nodded then there was noise that was so irrititable to ears that they had to cover it with their hands.
"I think we angered it," Leyo said loudly.
"No, it's not," Perdita said, she was the only one that didn't get bothered by the sound.
"Ugh... my head," March groaned. "Make it stop". Just like that, it stopped but the lights were off unexpectedly and it was pitch black "oh! frack, the power is out!"
"At least the noise is gone," Perfida grumbled as she rubbed her ears with her finger. "I think I can still hear it in my head."
The monitor was turned on again, it snow until it slowly showed something else "look," Perdita told them.
"What does it want now?" March was confused as to what was going on.
"It's asking you to watch."
"Perdita said it wants us to watch."
"Watch what?"
They glanced at the screen, there was a video clip, the location was a landscape, a very familiar landscape "oh my goodness, that looks like the place in my dream," Perfida gasped. "It's a simulation."
"Wow, freaky."
"Let's keep watching," Vance said.
"This is amazing," they heard a man's voice but his face was not shown because it was taken from his outlook. Literally. "I really am inside the game."
"Now let's see if this game works well, Void," said the other guy who was talking to him through audio.
"Okay, so this guys here is Void, he's our ghosts." Perfida pointed out then they watched him play a bit by building houses and stuff. "That looks fun."
"Focus," Vance reminded her.
"Sorry."
Void explored the virtual world a bit and went to the lake with the flying fish in it like Perfida's dream then he saw his reflection in it "this is incredible," he said in amazement.
"That is him," Perfida confirmed when they saw his face and to her shock the reflection in the lake was reverse as well. "Oh! wow."
The simulation started to glitch "Ricky, what's happening?" Void asked in a shakey tone, the soulpadres were horrified to watch when things began to get bad.
"Uhm... I...uhmm..." the other guy stuttered. "I'll get you out of there, hold on."
The glitch was getting worse by the second, it was too stressful to watch "hurry! get me out!" Void exclaimed but it was too late.
"I'm trying."
They watched that the virtual world depleting including Void then there was a blood-curdling scream that followed, it was so loud that they did not watch how it all went wrong "what was that?" March shivered.
"He died from playing a game," Perfida stammered as she could not believe what she saw then the power was back which meant the lights were on again inside.
"But what does he want?" Vance asked.
"GET ME OUT!!" the voice from the computer spoke, the kids screamed from it. "GET ME OUT! GET ME OUT!"
It started to over-heat that smoke were coming out "let's figure that out later, right now I think we should get out of here before it explodes with us," Vance said, he took Perfida's arms and they all ran out of there like a bat out of a cave.
They dashed to the door but once they got there, it shut by itself that they all bumped into each other and fell on the ground, Leyo stood up and tried to open it but it couldn't "it's lock," he said in a distressed tone.
"Lock? what do you mean lock?" March panicked as he got up and tried to open it too. "Oh shit, it's lock."
"GET ME OUT! GET ME OUT!" Void's voice echoed and the lights started flickering.
"What's happening?"
"I don't know but we need to leave fast," Vance panted, he pulled then pushed the door to open yet to no avail.
"It doesn't want you guys to leave," Perdita cried.
"You think?" Perfida said back to her sister and getting agitated at the situation. "There must be another way out."
Vance said looking around the area "okay, where's the emergency exit?"
"GET ME OUT!" Void continued to roar at them that every magnetic bulbs bursted into pieces that they all had to ducked down and cover themselves after that the power was gone indefinitely this time.
Not long after the supernatural chaos, the soulpadres were still at the main entrance sitting on the floor, with their phones used as flashlights, to talk about what the hell was going on "you guys okay?" Perfida asked her friends.
"Yes," Leyo said.
"Yup," Vance replied.
"Very," March answered.
"Believe it or not, this does not compare than what Hawkes put me and my sister through this summer," Perfida told them, Perdita nodded in agreement.
"Don't sweat it, Peachy, we wanted to do this even though me and Leyo just stayed behind but it's better than being waaaay behind."
"Yeah, we're gonna get out of here, we just need to stay calm and think for a while."
"That was scary," March choked remembering that last scene in the video.
"That's how the ghost died, he was playing a game and something went wrong that it killed him, he showed it to us," Perfida replied. "And his name is Void or was..."
"Did you guys see that the simulation went all weird?" Vance asked.
"Yeah, I wonder what went wrong?"
"Malfunction probably."
"Poor guy," March sighed.
"Oh my crapolai, that could be us," Perfida realized.
"Luckily, it's not but what does he want then?"
"He keeps saying get me out," Perfida recalled.
"Get out from where? the computer?"
"Maybe, I mean... that's how he died, he's not like the other ghost I dealt with but it's hopeless because the computer would get over-heated... and you know what happened next."
"Well we can't be of any help here now that the power is out, let's focus on getting out of here, does anyone have a signal on their phone?"
"Nada," Perfida checked her phone along with the rest of them, they too had no signal.
"Let's find the fire exit then," Vance told them, they all got up and went the other way. They eventually found it so he pushed the door but it wouldn't open "you got to be kidding me, the emergency exit is automated too? it's suicide, what if there's a fire?"
"This is stellar, we're trap," Perfida exasperated.
"Maybe I'm just assuming things but can't Perdita transport herself to one place to another and call your grandpa for help."
"Sorry," Perdita shook her head.
"She can't," Perfida answered.
"That's okay, I'm sure there's another way," Vance looked up and had another idea. "The vent. Let's make a human... and cosmic citizen totem pole."
"Let's do it."
"Tallest to shortest."
"Okay, here goes nothing," March was the tallest one, Vance was the second tallest so he climbed on him and stood on his shoulder after that it was Perfida and stood on his shoulder and lastly, Leyo was the shortest so he stood on her shoulder yet his arms were longer than his body with big hands like an orangutan that he could stretch to the vents if he tiptoed.
"Come on, come on," Vance mumbled hoping that Leyo could reach it, Perdita could only watch them intently.
Leyo's hands were just a centimeter away "almost there," he managed to pushed the door vents and put his hand in. "Got it" before he pulled himself up, there was an object rolled out and hit Leyo's head, their totem pole went wobbly and they all stumbled to one another, Perdita cringed as she watched them hurt again.
"Leyo, are you okay?" Perfida asked even though she and the two other guys were in pain.
"Yes, I think," Leyo rubbed his head. "But I'll manage."
"What's this?" Vance picked up the object that hurt Leyo, it seem like the color was originally white but it was covered in dirt with black face shield.
"The thing that hurt me."
"The thing that I don't want to touch," March added looking disgusted by it.
"It's broken," Vance observed.
"Of course, it fell out from the vent," March reminded.
"No, look at it again, there's burn marks."
"Oh my," Perfida felt disturbed at how the person died that way. "It looks like a helmet," Perfida took it from Vance and it gave her a vision, it was through the eyes of whoever was wearing it, his last memory.
"Okay, Void, let's see if this baby works," said a guy that Perfida was facing to when the helmet was worn, he was tall, fair-skin, dyed green hair wearing a white V&R Park Logo tees.
"Alright, Ricky, I'm ready," Void said back.
Perfida got back to reality "you blacked out there, did you have a vision?" March noticed.
"Yeah, this helmet is their VR goggles," Perfida explained.
"But why is it hidden in the vent?"
"I didn't see that part, all I saw was this guy with green hair, his name is Ricky."
"Wait. In that video that the ghost showed to us, he mentioned a guy named Ricky, remember?" Vance recalled.
"Oh! yeah, he was there."
"It's possible that he killed the guy, I mean why would this be hidden in there all these years?"
"I guess," Perfida shrugged.
"Can we just put a pin on this theory and try to get out here first?" March asked.
"Right, do you guys want to try the totem pole again?" Vance said.
"Sure," March bent down so Vance go on his shoulder again.
"What are you kids doing?" a voice said, the kids screamed out of fright again.
