Chapter 12

They rushed to TocaTokyo, Vance and Leyo were in there waiting for the other three "what's going on? why do you want us here" Perfida asked them once she saw their worried faces.

"Can't really explain it here," Vance whispered. "Let's go to Toca's office."

"Toca's office? why?"

They went inside and saw Toca with Brett lying like mannequin on the couch and he helmet in his head "what's with him?" March asked.

"And why is he wearing the helmet?" Perfida took a closer look at Brett.

"I don't know, I went to his house and found him like this," Toca explained feeling scared for his friend. Perfida tried to remove the gear from his head but she couldn't "I tried that, it's attach to his head or something."

"What the heck?" Perfida then touched his hand if the psychometry could give her something, Perdita looked even baffled at what happened to Brett.

"What are you doing?" Toca asked.

"Trying to see what happened."

"Can it work even if he's not a ghost?" Leyo asked.

"There's a first for everything." Perfida began putting her focus on Brett to get a vision.

"Anything?" Vance asked after waiting for ten seconds.

"No," Perfida grunted then she saw leered at the helmet and thought of another way. "But maybe..." she touched the gear instead and got a vision. She saw the helmet pounced at Brett to wear it then it stopped there that Perfida was back to reality leaving a shocked look in her face.

"What? what did you see?"

"The helmet, it did that."

"Huh?" Toca didn't follow what she was talking about.

"Wait? are you saying the helmet came alive and made Brett wear it?" March asked, Perdita gasped.

"That's about it," Perfida confirmed.

Toca was flabberghasted "what? that piece of junk is responsible?"

"If I were you, try not to badmouth it, now that we know it 'comes alive' and could attack you too if you keep saying it that," Vance advised.

"Alright. I'm sorry," Toca apologized to the helmet. "You are an antique, a classic piece. Please, don't attack me."

"What should we do?"

"I don't know, I never seen anything like this before," Perfida replied.

"Why not take him to the hospital?" Leyo suggested.

"And say what? HELP! my friend's brain is controlled from wearing a haunted VR headgear," Toca respond.

"Do you have a better idea?"

"If you take him to the hospital, it would hurt other people there too," Perfida voiced.

"There's that," March saw her point.

"Let me try to call Hawkes," Perfida said, she took out her phone and started calling him yet it went to voicemail, can't talk, in a mission. "Ugh... he's still busy, we're on our own."

"Just leave him a message," Vance advised.

"Okay," Perfida called again. "Hi, I know you're in the middle of a mission but I need your help, I'll cut to the chase, there's this haunting VR park and now there's a guy unconscious by wearing an electronic helmet, call me when you get this message..

"So what are we going to do with him now?" March asked.

"I don't want to take him home but I will take care of him," Toca said.

"Leyo and I can help," Vance assured him.

"Okay, okay, great. God, you guys need to finding Ricky. FAST."

"We're trying, there's so much we can do to find one guy," Perfida said.

"I guess, I can help."

The kids were taken aback by this, "you will?" Vance asked.

"Yeah, whatever it takes to make the search faster."

"We do need the help we can get and hopefully, we find him soon," Perfida mumbled and looked over to Brett who was affected by this haunting. "Very soon."

"Gosh, poor Brett, I wonder how that happened?" Leyo questioned.

"This is getting stranger and stranger by the moment," Vance voiced.

"And confusing too," Perfida added.

"By the way, I know we called you guys here but any luck on Pena?" Vance asked them as they walked out the office.

"Nope," Perfida answered then checked the trackerpad. "But she's still in her apartment right now, why don't we go back?"

"Sure," March said.

"Stellar, me and Leyo will go back to help Toca," Vance said.

"Okay, let's go," Perfida replied.

------

Perfida, Perdita and March returned to spy on Pena, "I think she's one of those people who just chills in her home on the weekends," March told to Perfida.

"Maybe or... she has an agenda later," Perfida respond.

"Doubtless, we can't stay here all night especially me, my dad would kill me".

"Okay, what if we wait til five and call it a day?"

"Stellar, thanks, Peach."

-------

In the other hand, the other two assisted Toca with Brett who was placed in a big sports bag so no would see that they were carrying an unconscious man, "so where are you taking him again?" Vance asked as they struggled to carry a dead weight short guy to Toca's car by the parking lot.

"My family has a house outside the city, it's secluded," Toca answered. "No lived there in ages."

"You're gonna leave him there?"

"Well... what if you're right? what if this headgear can hurt people?"

"You believed that?" Vance chuckled. "I was just joking."

"I think it's true."

"Gentlemen, can we just take him to the car?" Leyo was having a hard time lifiting Brett. "He's not getting any lighter."

"Sorry, Leyo," Vance apologized. "Now, come on, my arms are getting weaker too. Wait. how did you get him here in the first place?"

"I used a trolley," Toca answered. They stopped because Vance and Leyo frowned at him "I forgot, I'll go get one right now".

They carefully put Brett down, Vance and Leyo stretched a bit while Toca ran to get a trolley.

Later, they were on the road heading to Toca's said place by truck that he used to stock ingredients for his restaurant but there was a slight problem "tell me again why can't you use your car?" Vance asked shivering from fear and Leyo wrapping him with his longs arms also scared from Toca's inexperience driving of a huge vehicle since they sat shotgun.

"Because my car doesn't have a trunk that fits Brett and what's wrong with my driving?" Toca wasn't aware that he was not very good.

"Let's just say, you nearly hit twenty cars in five seconds."

"Emphasis on nearly."

"Emphasis on hitting twenty cars."

"Pfft... you two just haven't ridden a truck before, this is how they do it."

They heard a siren, Vance saw police car coming at them "oh yeah? tell that to them."

"Stellar," Toca groaned and pulled the truck aside then took of his seatbelt. "Don't worry, I'll handle this."

"Okay," Leyo replied then turned to Vance. "We're going to be in trouble, aren't we?"

"You two wear these," Toca gave them aprons from a cupboard.

Toca was out of the truck to face the officer while the two boys stood beside him and wore the aprons from TocaTokyo to make it seem like they were his empolyees "do you have any idea how fast you're going?" the police asked. "License and registration, please."

Toca handed him the ID and QR registration "I'm sorry, officer, I'm in a bit of a rush to get some... stuff for my restaurant."

"Really?" the officer took a look at his driver license. "But you are not licensed to drive a truck."

"It's an emergency. The guy who does the delivery is sick."

"Mm hmm, can I check the back?"

"No!" Vance panicked.

"And why not?"

"What he means is... my restaurant serves sushi and this trunk is pre-freezing for the fish that we're going to get," Toca lied. "If we open it, the coldness inside will be gone, it'll take a while to pre-freeze it again especially in the summer."

The officer had this look of doubt. "alright, I'll let you off with a warning then."

"Seriously?" Vance was surprised that they were off so easy.

"Yes, BUT."

"Oh, I knew that was too easy."

"I want you to let my son and his friends celebrate his tenth birthday in TocaTokyo, he loves hanging out there."

"Deal."

"And I want it free."

"You got it," Toca reluctantly accepted a free of charge birthday just to slip out from the law. "Anything else?"

"Drive safely."

"Yes, sir."

The officer left them and the three of them hurried back to the truck "whew, that was really easy," Vance sighed in relief.

"Yeah, sure," Toca grinded his teeth together out of frustration.

"Look at the brightside."

"What?"

"You're helping your friend."

"Right."

They arrived in Toca's old house and like he said, no one lived there, A Japanese modern vacation home, it was in the middle of nowhere no neighbours, just some woods and a big body of lake. "This place is stellar," Vance commented, he was impressed at how the place looked. "If Brett is not being brain dead by the headgear, he's lucky to be here."

"Yeah, spent my summer here when I was a kid with my family," Toca said. "Now come on, help me get Brett out of the truck."

"Where are we going to put him?"

"In my room."

The took Brett out from the truck and were having a hard time again to carry him inside the house. Once they got in Toca's bedroom and put him on his bed "that was tiring, what now?" Leyo asked.

"My mom has a baby monitor here after when she had my sister, I can use that to keep an eye on him when I'm not here. I think it's in the storage room, I'll be right back, you guys make yourself at home."

"Stellar, thanks," Vance said then dashed to the soft tatami couch and Leyo sat in the lazy boy while they were relaxing.

-------

It was almost night time, Perfida, Perdita and March finally saw that Pena exited the building "there she is," March whispered then pulled her to hide at the side of a store.

They watched Pena walking the other way "let's go," Perfida said and they followed her.

"She looks all dressed up," March noticed.

"Yeah, so?"

"Maybe... she's not going to see Ricky."

"We don't know that."

They followed her about ten blocks from her place and led them to a very fancy restaurant, they saw her went inside through the wide window then met up with an older man wearing a nice suit "that doesn't look like Ricky at all, Peachy," March observed. "I think she's in a date or something."

"March, is right," Perdita informed as she appeared beside her sister.

"Okay, I guess we're done here, let's check on Vance's side, maybe they already took care of Brett."

-------

Back in Toca's house, Leyo helped Toca installed the old baby monitor in his bedroom, "Perfida just messaged me, nothing comes up to Pena," Vance informed.

"That's great, right?" Toca said.

"I guess but that doesn't mean she's not a suspect."

"Probably."

"By the way, does Crol knows that Brett is... kinda not well?" Vance asked.

"Nope," Toca answered. "I don't know how to explain that his business partner is attacked by a haunted headgear and the previous owner of the VR park."

"Good point."

"Are you sure that no one is gonna come here?"

"If there is, it'll be an intruder. Don't worry, the security system is updated."

"And in Brett's state, there's no doubt he'll go somewhere," Leyo added.

"Anyway, where did you guys find that helmet?"

"At the vents near the fire exit," Leyo answered.

"What were you guys doing by the vents?"

"We got locked inside the VR park when the power went off, we were gonna get out through the vents then we found that," Vance explained.

"Perfida said that it's the headgear that Void used when he died, she saw it in her vision," Leyo revealed and Toca looked shock.

"You're saying that Brett is wearing the same headgear that killed Void?"

The two got tongue tied after realizing that they forgot that little detail "Dude, we're sorry," Vance apologized. "We don't know that this could happen."

"I know, I know, but I think we really need to find this."

"The camera is all set up," Leyo said.

"Stellar, I just need to connect it in my phone and let's get out of here," Toca said. They left a moment later leaving Brett in the house in the middle of the woods, he was just lying there like a ragdoll in Toca's bed until the headgear started to light up and made the camera turned off by itself after that his hand began to move up without the boys knowing.
