Chapter 5
"Yeah, we're gonna check out a temple today, what about you? what are you going to do?... hiking? nice, let's do that someday, together I mean," Vance was on the phone with his boyfriend, March was sitting next to him in the van and he was tortured just listening to their conversation. "...Just becareful, okay? I want you in one piece... Oh, we're almost there, I'll call you back. Alright, I miss you too". He got off the phone feeling the euphoria then looked at March "he's being so cute."
"So adorable," March respond pretending to be happy for his friend's love life.
They arrived in the Zumuyan temples in the middle of a vast land, it was huge about eight-storey high and it was make of rocks but it was in ruins, there were four different statues that are six feet high at each side where the Zumus were seen praying because they were their Gods. Tourist and cosmic citizen that see the place as an attraction by looking around, taking picture, also pay respects by bowing in front of those Gods and were seen praying as well.
"Wow! this place is amazing," Perfida was astounded at the scenery once she exited the vehicle with the rest then took a picture with it in her phone.
"Yeah," Perdita agreed as she felt the same was as her twin. The fresh air blowing their faces, the soft grasses, and the big hills where the children were playing by running up and rolled back down.
"Look at that, Bryce, do you want to play up there after we finish?"
"Yes!" Bryce said excitingly.
Vance got out last from the van then hissed in pain "Aww... my back hurts," he whined.
"Oh! you think that's painful? well, my heart got stomped on by you," March mumbled in bitterness behind him so he won't hear it, Perfida punched his arm a little from saying that, Perdita was giggling at the side.
"Let's go inside," Ram told them.
They entered the temple at a wide doorway and was wowed at the interior from its intricate carving on the walls with few more statue that were visibly preserved by the Zumus. All of a sudden, once everyone were inside, Perdita couldn't like there was an invisible wall blocking her way "what the...? Peach!" she called her sister.
"What?" Perfida turned around and saw her sister was still outside.
"I can't get in."
"Huh? what do you mean"
"I can't get in. Look," Perdita showed her, Perfida was baffled that there was some force that was preventing her to enter.
"What's wrong?" Vance asked by whispering.
"My sister can't get inside," Perfida answered.
"Why is that?"
"Is something wrong?" Torrey asked the two kids who were whispering, only Archie knew that it wasn't true yet he did not know what was going on.
"Nothing," the two teens panicked a bit.
"I... I was just telling him that this place is awesome," Perfida lied while Vance just nodded to make her statement true.
"It is, isn't it?" Ram said. "There's a reason why this was built, it was to be protected, any guesses from what?"
"Uhm... animals?" March guessed.
"Uh... no but that's possible. It was from lost spirit."
"Ooohh," Vance and Perfida turned their heads to the doorway where Perdita was still there, she frowned that it was built to keep something like her outside.
"Although, they believe that lost souls are dangerous or whatever, I wonder if it works?"
"Oh, it does," Perfida cringed then mouthed sorry to her sister.
"I'll wait here," Perdita sulked, she turned around facing the land feeling so sour. "Stupid ghost protecting temple, I'm a nice ghost."
Back in indoors, they were praying to one statue to another then there was this one statue, a bald woman in a kaftan dress with a turban on her head that put its hand out "this is Bimbee, she is the Goddess of family and love," Ram told them. "In here, you touch her hand and quietly tell her what you're praying that involves the two."
"Love? I'll go first," Archie exclaimed and dashed to line up.
"Me too," March said.
"I'll go next," Perfida stood behind him.
Meanwhile outside the temple, Perdita enjoyed watching the kids just being kids, running around chasing each other then she saw there were two little girls spinning with their hands holding that it reminded her of her sister when she and Perfida were little that it made her imagine that they were them.
"Are you lost?" a she heard man's voice said, she looked to her side and was startled that there was a person standing right next to her, a tall man wearing a brown garment like a toga, he had dark skin, bald with white-inked tattoo face that resembled a skull yet he was smiling at her.
Perdita was wide-eyed and not because of his appearance but he popped out of nowhere. "Are you talking to me?" she gulped. The man nodded, a kid past through him like projection light, Perdita was shocked to see it. "You're a ghost."
"Yes, I am Zau, one of the spirit guardian of this temple."
"Spirit guardian?"
"Yes," then many spiritual guardian appeared roaming around the area without the living knowing they were there, Perdita was blown away. "And you are?"
"Perdita."
"Why are you here, Perdita?"
"My family is inside the temple and I'm waiting for them out here because I can't get in."
"The temple is built to keep away the bad spirits."
"Bad? you think I'm bad?"
"No, the Wagans but our prayer prevent every spirits to go inside."
"They take people away, right?"
"Yes, and harm them but don't worry about them, they are in the other parts of the forest," Zau informed her which made Perdita worry. "Come, I will show you around". Perdita smiled that he was nice to her so she followed him.
Back inside, Perfida was next and held the Bimbee statue's hand, she got a vision from it, she saw what the place looked like long ago, it was colorful, the structure were clearer and there were full of people wearing brown wrapping clothings with white tattoos on their faces then got back to reality feeling fascinated at what she saw.
"So... what did you pray for?" Vance gave this teasing smirk to March.
March's face was turning red, he looked down to hide it. "It's a secret," he stammered.
"Oh, come on."
Perfida moved away for the other people to pray so she went to friends and they noticed her expression "you okay?" March asked.
"Yeah..." she answered softly. "I... I just got a vision from touching that Bimbee statue."
"What did you see?" Vance quipped, he too was impressed.
"I saw what this place had color before and there were people wearing this... brown clothing and their faces were..." something caught Perfida's eyes then pointed at it with her finger. "Similiar to that". There was a small carved illustration of them by the wall straight ahead, she took a closer look at it.
"They are temple guardians," Ram emerged once he caught Perfida observing the sketch.
"Who are they?" Vance asked.
"They were the people that lived here to serve the Gods, very Holy people, it is believed when they died and their soul protects the temple."
"Are there some guardians now? why am I not seeing any of them here?"
"There are but it's just a handful of them now and they visit the temple to pray and clean it up once a week. If we're lucky, we meet on in town. Come on, there's more to see here."
About an hour later, they were done exploring the temple so they walked out and Perfida looked for her sister but she was nowhere to be found yet she saw the spirit guardians that she recognized in her vision "he wasn't kidding when he said that they protect the temple with their souls but where's Purdy?"
"You don't see her?" Leyo asked, Archie heard his other granddaughter was lost.
"Yeah, I need to find her."
"Peachy, Where's Purdy?" Bryce asked, Bryce even saw the spirit guardians walking around among the living. "And who are they?"
"I... don't know but I'm sure she's around, they're the spirit guardian, Mr. French said that they're good people or... ghost, maybe they know where Purdy is."
"Who's Purdy?" Torrey heard the little boy saying another name, Perfida dreaded to talk out loud about her dead sister.
"Purdy? no," Archie jumped in to help. "She asked... where's... the buuurdy."
"Birdy?"
"Yes... she saw this bird earlier when we arrived and she's hoping to see it again."
"Oh," Torrey seem to buy Archie's lie and just shook it off.
"Is there a gift shop around here?"
"Yes, right behind there, follow me," Ram said.
"You kids, wait here," Archie winked at them, Ram and Torrey accompanied him as they walked behind the temple.
Perfida began feeling worried that her sister so she turned to her brother "you said you want to play, right?" Perfida said to her little brother.
"Yes," Bryce nodded, Perfida then took her brother to her friends.
"You play with them first," then she looked at her friends. "I need to find my sister by asking one of these spirit guardians?"
"Sure," Vance said. "Come on, Bryce, race you up the hills".
Now that they got distracted, Perfida stood beside a spirit guardian so it won't look like she was someone who was talking to their imaginary friends "ahem, excuse me, spirit guardian," she called his attention, he slowly turned to her.
"You... you see me?" the spirit guardian was taken aback by a living that can see a ghost.
"Yes," Perfida confirmed. "I'm looking for my sister, she's a spirit too so she should be out here, she's the same height as me, blonde, golden eye color and wearing a blush pajama."
"Oh, you mean Perdita?"
"Yes, her, have you seen her? where is she?"
"I'm here, Peachy," Perdita popped up from behind with Zau that it startled her twin.
"Purdy," Perfida grumbled. "Where were you? and who's with you?"
"This is Zau."
"Uhm... hi!"
"Hello," Zau greeted with a light bow.
"She's my twin sister," Perdita told him. "Wow, it's nice to introduce someone for once."
"She's your sister?" Zau was surprised at that.
"Yes, now you can see that I'm the prettiest," she said while Perfida snickered and rolled her eyes to that remark. "He showed me around the place, sorry to scare you."
"That's okay, so what did you see?"
"Just those statue Gods and introduced me to other spirit guardians."
"How incredible that you can see spirits," Zau expressed to Perfida.
"Thanks," Perfida smiled.
"You are the first living person to see us."
"I am?"
"Becareful when you see a Wagan, they are very dangerous, they can control your minds and take you away."
The twins gulped just hearing the name. "Kids!" Archie called them. "Get inside the van and get lunch."
"We have to go," Perfida said to Zau.
"Nice meeting you and thank you for the tour," Perdita said her farewell, she was actually glad that someone would interact with her and show her around the temple.
"It's my pleasure," Zau replied.
In the resort, Gussie spent all day in his room that looked like a tornado destroyed it because it was a mess, clothes were everywhere, beer bottles and some condoms filled the bin, his bed was missing a blanket. All he did was lying around staring numbly at his phone with only a boxer on him, it was a picture of him and Lexi as a happy couple "I miss you," he sulked, he swiped another image of them after another.
Lexi appeared in his room looking at him with pity, she sat on the bedside and stroke his golden yet unkempt hair "I miss you too," she said but he could not see and hear her. "I hate seeing you like this, babe."
