Chapter 23
Gussie just finished his task of the day so he took his car keys and got out of the room. He strolled to the hallway until he bumped into his mother, "hey, mom," he greeted.
"Where are you going?" Torrey asked.
"Showing Perfida and her friends the restaurant."
"Oh! I am happy that you all are getting along just fine now."
"Well, you're right, mom, they're cool. Anyway, I should get going."
"Hold on, Sweetie, just one more thing."
"Yeah, mom?"
"This may not be an easy thing to ask and I'm not gonna force you if can't."
"Mom, what is it?"
Torrey held his hand, "when you leave, maybe just maybe, you are willing to fix things with your father."
"Mom, I want that too but it's hard to do that when keeps berating me everytime we interact."
"I know, I'll talk to him about it and we can just all sit down and have a calm conversation."
Gussie briefly thought about then nodded, "sure, mom, we can do that."
His mother smiled and tried to hold back her tears, she hugged her son after that, "thank you, Gussie. Don't worry if he said something that hurts you, he will have to go through me first."
"Mom, that's fine, I'm used to that love language," he blurted. "Sorry that came out wrong."
"Well, it will change after that, okay?"
"Okay, mom."
"Now go, treat your friends."
"Bye, mom. Love you." Gussie kissed his mother on the cheek then left.
---------
Later, the arrived in the restaurant and the mood seem different than before, "I thought you said that this place is a dump," Vance said as he and the others got out from the jeep and tried not to look disgust at the establishment. "No offense."
There were more people there and there were adults doing some crafts and their kids playing around the yard, "it was." Gussie was just as stumped. "Maybe we should've brought along Bryce. Sorry."
"It's okay, he might not enjoy it," Perfida replied.
"So this is the restaurant," Lexi said. "The... location is nice."
"He's not gonna hear your honest opinion," Perdita reminded her fellow ghost.
The waiter that served Gussie came to them, "hey, you're back!"
"Yeah, with friends, hello again. What is going on here?" Gussie asked.
"Oh, we use the place for workshops to make weaves and baskets," the waiter answered. "I hope you don't mind."
"Stellar." Perfida was impressed.
"Can we still eat here?" Gussie quipped
"Yes, come inside." The waiter guided them. "We'll just have to find you a table and chairs."
"No problem."
"The view is great," Perfida commented as she was about to sit down a chair that was left by ridge at the side of the restaurant.
"No! don't sit on that!" the waiter yelled but it was too late, Perfida sat on it but the its leg bent that she fell.
"OW!" Perfida yelped, she was on the ground with this pain on her behind.
"You okay?" Vance helped her up.
"Yeah. I think."
"Sorry," the waiter apologized to them. "We put broken furniture here to fix it... later."
"That's... good to know," Perfida mumbled while she patted some dirt off from her skirt.
Later, they sat outside with the where Gussie sat the last time and also had the same food that he ate. "Food is good," March said.
"Yeah, for a fixer upper," Koru remarked.
"My mom will be here to pay for the restoration and all that," Gussie replied.
"That's stellar," Perfida voiced. "What about the name of the restaurant?"
"I want to name it after Lexi."
"Aww!" the boys were moved by that.
"Sweet, he's gonna name it after you," Perdita squealed to Lexi. "You must be so happy."
"Very," Lexi smiled.
After having their lunch, they joined in with the people who were working as they taught them how to weave fabrics and make baskets with them and played with the kids while Gussie and March sat down at the side watching them, "now I know why the restaurant is still standing," Gussie figured.
"What do you mean?" March asked.
"I wondered how a restaurant this beat up is alive, now I know why, the owners invests in local craftmanship," Gussie said. "Smart. Maybe I should do that too when I'm in charge."
"That's a stellar idea." Vance went to them with a paper bag in his hand. "It'll be ashame if this stops."
"What you got there?" March pointed at the bag.
"Oh, I bought a weave bag and sweater for my parents and I even bought some for myself."
"Me too, more for me anyway, I even bought a slingbag, a necklace and a bracelet. Can't wait to wear them in Ares City."
"Hey!" a guy appeared wearing a buttoned down shirt and slacks like from an office.
"Hi!" the gang greeted back.
"I'm Ben from the tourism office and there's going to be a Zumu traditional wedding just ten minutes from here, maybe you guys want to see it."
The kids looked at each other and agreed, "sure, let's go," Gussie said to him.
Vance accidentally took March's hand when they were about to go, the others had smug in their faces, "uhm... come on," Vance stuttered and did not even let go of his hand then ran with him to the jeep that was parked outside the restaurant.
"May I?" Gussie lend his hand to Perfida.
"Yes you may." She took it while Leyo went with Koru as he climbed on his back then followed the two boys.
Once they got to the wedding, it was in a local temple so the kids stood outside and watched the ceremony. The couples wore their local traditional purple weaves lined with silver threads, there was a temple gaurdian with off-white tunic initiating it and families from both side witnessing their union.
"So this is what their weddings look like," March admired. "This way more different than in Ares city."
They continued watching quietly and was moved when the couple kissed. "This is so stellar, not just their style of wedding but the idea of a wedding, I mean what are the odds that you know it's that person you want to spend your life with," Perfida expressed.
"I know I have that," Koru said. Lexi turned her head to Gussie while March glanced at Vance from behind him.
----
Hours after the wedding, it was raining hard. "Oh no," Gussie moaned. "I don't think we can't go back to the resort, there'll be floods in the road at this rate."
"Should we wait when it stops?" Vance asked.
"Yeah, til tomorrow," Koru informed.
"Oh."
"So where are we gonna sleep tonight?"
"Hmm... I'll handle this," Gussie told them.
Perfida messaged her grandfather that she and her friends could not be back that night while Gussie talked to some people from the wedding. "Well that was beautiful, what's your dream wedding?" Vance quipped to March.
March felt flustered, "uhm... not sure how I want it but I would like my wedding tuxedo in seafoam green and gold colored tie."
"Nice color tone."
"Thanks, what about you?"
"I'm thinking woodsy forest style, small and intimate, something like that," Vance described. "And there will be strings light hanging my the tree."
"Sounds lovely," March commented and he admired his style.
"Okay, I talked to one of the relatives and she said that we can stay with because coincidentally and also luckily, two rooms in her home are for AirBnB," Gussie said to them.
"Wow, stellar," Perfida respond.
"I'll just have to pay her for one night stay."
-----
"Thanks again for letting us stay in your inn, Mrs. Sheri," Vance thanked the owner of the place they were staying as she guided them to the place since gave her a righ too to get there.
They got a two-storey hut house a block from the temple and got out from the car then covered themselves from the rain. "Call me Sheri," the sweet old woman said. "And it's no trouble at all and it's nice to have children around my house once in a while, I live alone most of the time anyway after my son moved out. So did you like my niece's wedding?"
"Yes, it's a wonderful ceremony."
"Aren't you sweet." Sheri unlocked the door then they all walked inside. "Quickly, go inside before you kids get sick."
The interior was rustic and industrial style. "Wow!" Perdita was amazed at the inside of the inn.
"Yeah, not bad." Lexi felt the same way.
"You have a very... very nice place," Gussie said to her because he was impressed.
"Thank you, my niece styled it for me."
"The one that got married tonight?"
"Yes."
"Cool."
"Let's have a warm snacks first before going to your rooms, I will also find you kids some comfortable clothes to sleep on for tonight."
"Thanks, Sheri."
Lexi saw that there were framed photos by the glass cabinet she saw a portrait of a guy next to Sheri, who brown skin, dark curly hair, thin face and light blue sleepy eyes. "Oh... that's her son," she mumbled.
"Hm? What are you talking about" Perdita quipped.
"Nothing, it's just that I met that man before."
"Is he a friend?"
"Not really, he's this activist who is not a fan of my dad."
------
The Soulpadres shared one room while Gussie and Koru were in the other one. There were two queen-size beds that were pushed together into one. The kids wore the the clothes that the owner lend them. "This has been an interesting experience for all of us," Vance remarked.
"I know, right? It's been a long day," Perfida yawned. "Let's just go to bed."
"Yeah, I'm tired too."
The kids were going to sleep, Leyo lied down at one side of the bed by the edge then Perfida lied down next to him. "Ahem." March called out to her attention then gave her this eye contance.
"What?" Perfida did not understand what he was trying to say until he gestured towards to Vance that she finally caught on. "Oh! right."
The girl moved the other way so March laid down with Leyo instead while Perfida was going to sleep beside Vance.
They all dozed off until March turned to Perfida's side and put leg on her that it woke her up from the heavy drop. Even though she had the hard time moving from the added weight, Perfida went back to sleep but then Vance did the same that the two boys' arms intertwined that it was squeezing the life out of the girl.
The two ghost girls laughed at Perfida's awkward situation, "how's it going there, Peachy?" Perdita teased.
"You seem comfy," Lexi added by snickering.
"Oh shut up you two," Perfida snapped back by whispering.
----
The next morning, Archie, Bryce and Harrison got out from a clothing store but then they heard a commotion by the parking lot, "you can't have your property by the forest!" they heard a man shouting.
Archie looked over and saw a group of local young men harrassing this one man standing beside a very nice car arguing to them while his driver protected him from them, "it's not like I'm taking away your home and it's not my fault that it's for sale either."
"Regardless, you can't do this!"
"Bryce stay here with Harrison," Archie told him. "I'll be back."
"Okay, Papoli," the boy replied.
Archie walked up to them, "hey! Gentlemen, is there a problem here?" he called their attention, apparently it was Lexi's father that these men were hounding on. "Mauro? what's going on?"
"Archie." Mauro turned to him. "It's nothing, just another protesters bothering me."
"You people," one of them answered Archie. "This is our island, you have no right to come here and do what it is you do to our island."
"I'm sorry, that's how you feel but times are different now so whether you like it or not, I can do what I want to the property I LEGALLY BOUGHT!!!"
"Mauro, enough," Archie called him out but the young man shoved Mauro to the ground that he got up the was about to attack but his driver and Archie managed to pull him away. "Stop it! that's uncalled for."
Security gaurds came and took those guys away from the premise. "You okay, Mauro?" Archie asked. "What was that?"
"They are what we call the Insurgencies, group of people that do not like new settlers such as myself and cosmic citizens. This happens to me a lot but that's the first time I experience violence from any of them."
"That was out of line."
"Si. Anyway, gracias, Amigo."
"Papoli, is it okay now?" Bryce ran to his grandfather with Harrison.
"Yes, it's okay now," Archie assured him.
"Is this your grandson?" Mauro asked.
"Yes, Bryce, this is my friend Uncle Mauro."
"Hi," Bryce said to him. "Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too." Mauro patted the boy's head. "He looks a lot like your son. You said you have a granddaughters too, right? where are they?"
"Actually, now I have one now, they were twins," Archie clarified. "One of them died with Apollo in the crash."
"Oh my, I didn't know."
"No, it's okay. Anyway, the other one, Perfida, she and her friends went away with Gussie."
Mauro's facial expression became different, "Gussie? Ram's unico hijo? you let her go anywhere with that bastardos? careful, you might lose her too."
Archie knew what he meant, "Bryce, why don't you go wait for me in that restaurant over there?"
"Okay, Papoli." Bryce walked away with the dog so that the grown-ups can talk.
"Mauro, I know you're angry but Gussie is not responsible for your daughter's death."
"Nice seeing you again, Amigo," Mauro said to him with a blank stare then went off with the driver.
