Chapter 2: Descent into Eiridun

The planet of Eiridun hung like a distant jewel in the endless black of space, its surface shimmering under the soft glow of a dying sun. Clouds of violet dust swirled around the atmosphere, and jagged mountain ranges cut through the landscape below, giving the planet a harsh, desolate look.

Inside the cockpit of the Union's sleek reconnaissance vessel, Kira guided the ship through Eiridun's gravitational field with practiced precision. The planet had a reputation-unstable, unpredictable, and largely uninhabited after centuries of tectonic turmoil had forced most settlers off-world. The abandoned temples scattered across the surface were all that remained of an ancient civilization long forgotten.

"This place looks... welcoming," Dax said, leaning forward as the ship sliced through the thick atmosphere. "Nothing says 'mysterious ancient artifact' like a planet trying to tear itself apart."

Kira ignored his sarcasm, focusing on navigating through the turbulent skies. The gravitational fluxes on Eiridun were already affecting their flight path, and she had to carefully compensate to keep the ship steady. Sweat beaded on her forehead as her hands flew over the controls, every movement precise.

"Getting a little bumpy, isn't it?" Dax commented, his voice just behind her.

"You think?" she muttered, feeling the ship shudder as it fought against the planet's pull. "This atmosphere is denser than we expected. Brace yourself-we're going in."

With a sharp jolt, the ship broke through the final layer of clouds, and the surface of Eiridun stretched out before them. Cracked plains and jagged cliffs sprawled beneath their feet, with flashes of lightning illuminating the distant horizon.

"There," Kira said, spotting the ruins of the ancient temple they were heading toward, a dark silhouette nestled between two towering cliffs. It looked old. Dangerous. Perfect.

"You weren't kidding about the place being abandoned, huh?" Dax said, tapping at the ship's console to run a scan of the area. "No signs of life... or much of anything else, for that matter."

"Good. That means no one to get in our way," Kira replied, bringing the ship down for a landing on a rocky outcrop just beyond the temple. The moment the landing gear touched down, she powered off the engines and grabbed her gear, slinging a light-weight pack over her shoulders.

Dax was already up and moving, grabbing a toolkit from the cargo hold, his expression shifting to something more serious. Whatever jokes he had earlier were gone now-he was ready.

"You ever been on a mission like this before?" Kira asked as they exited the ship, the cool air of Eiridun washing over them, thick with the scent of ozone.

"Ancient ruins? Dead planets? Rival mercenaries hunting us down? Yeah, totally normal Tuesday for me," Dax replied, smirking. But then, he glanced over at her, his expression softening. "Nah. Not like this. But I've dealt with some pretty dicey tech before. We'll figure it out."

Kira nodded, silently appreciating the shift in his demeanor. She could already feel the gravity in the area pulling at her muscles, heavier than it had been in orbit. Eiridun was a volatile planet, and they hadn't even entered the temple yet.

"Stay close," Kira said as they started their trek toward the entrance of the temple. "This place has probably been abandoned for centuries, but that doesn't mean it's safe."

They walked in silence for a while, their boots crunching against the rough, uneven ground. The temple loomed larger as they approached, its dark stone walls covered in vines and cracked from years of neglect. The entrance was a gaping archway, tall enough for two people to walk through side by side, though shadows swallowed the interior.

Dax pulled a small device from his toolkit and held it up to the archway. It emitted a soft hum, scanning the structure. "There's definitely some energy signatures coming from inside," he said, his eyes narrowing. "Old tech, probably running on some kind of self-sustaining power source. Shouldn't be too hard to tap into."

Kira nodded, feeling her muscles tighten with anticipation. She wasn't a fan of walking into dark, ancient places with little information, but they had a job to do. She led the way into the temple, the cool shadows enveloping them as they crossed the threshold.

Inside, the air was thick with dust, and the walls were etched with strange markings, worn smooth by time. The floor sloped downward into a series of interconnected chambers, each more narrow and labyrinthine than the last.

Dax stepped closer to her, his voice low. "I'll start mapping the layout, see if we can pinpoint where the artifact might be. But something tells me this isn't gonna be as simple as walking up and grabbing it."

"It never is," Kira murmured, her eyes scanning the walls. She could feel the strange tug of the planet's gravity interacting with her own power, pulling at her in unpredictable ways. The temple seemed alive with energy, and something about it unsettled her.

As they ventured deeper, the air grew colder, and the faint hum of ancient machinery filled the silence. They rounded a corner, and the narrow hallway opened into a large chamber, its ceiling arched high above them. In the center of the room stood a pedestal, and atop it sat an orb of shimmering crystal-the artifact.

"There it is," Dax said softly, his voice filled with awe. "That's what we came for."

But Kira's instincts screamed at her to be careful. "Wait," she said, grabbing Dax's arm just as he started to move forward. Her eyes scanned the room again. Something wasn't right. The gravity felt... off, like it was being manipulated.

Dax paused, glancing at her curiously. "What is it?"

Kira's hand clenched around his arm, her pulse quickening. "There's a gravitational field in here-stronger than it should be. It's protecting the artifact. If we just walk in, we're likely to trigger something."

Dax frowned, stepping back and taking out his scanner again. "Good catch. There's a charge building in the room, too. If you hadn't stopped me, we'd have been fried."

Kira allowed herself a small smirk. "Glad to know my powers are good for more than flying ships and looking annoyed."

Dax flashed her a grin. "I never doubted you for a second. But how do we get past this?"

Kira stared at the orb, feeling the weight of the field pressing down on her. She could manipulate it, she knew, but it would take precision-and a hell of a lot of focus. "I can dampen the gravity field around it, but I'll need you to disrupt the energy source it's drawing from."

Dax nodded, already moving toward the outer edge of the chamber, where an old control panel was embedded in the wall. His fingers flew over the controls, and the room filled with a soft hum as the machinery sputtered to life.

"Let me know when you're ready," he said, glancing back at her.

Kira closed her eyes, extending her senses outward. She could feel the gravitational forces pulling at the room, pressing down on the pedestal. Slowly, she reached out with her power, unraveling the invisible threads of force, lightening the pressure bit by bit.

"Now," she whispered.

Dax's hands moved, and suddenly the hum of energy in the room flickered, weakening just enough for Kira to pull the gravity back entirely. The field around the orb collapsed, leaving it exposed.

They both stood still for a moment, catching their breath. "Nice work," Dax said, his voice quiet in the now still chamber.

"You too," Kira replied, surprised at how easy it felt to work together-like their powers were meant to fit together. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the weight of the moment sinking in. The room was quiet, but the space between them was charged, filled with an energy she hadn't expected.

But before they could move forward, a sharp, metallic clank echoed through the chamber. Kira's heart jumped as she turned, just in time to see the shadows shift near the entrance.

"We've got company," Dax murmured.

From the darkness emerged three figures, their faces hidden behind dark helmets emblazoned with the insignia of the Black Nova Syndicate. They weren't alone on this mission after all.
