Chapter 4
"Where are we going?" Adam asks as he is dragged out of the cell.
"I think you could use some fresh air." Tim says but stops when he sees several inmates standing by the railing laughing at Adam's breakdown speech. "So, ya'll think that's funny? You're not gonna think it's so funny when I kick your f*cking *sses up in between your shoulders." He growls.
"Sorry, Foust." A prisoner says, holding up his hands and backing away.
"Now, GET THE HELL AWAY FROM MY CELL!" Tim yells.
The inmates quicken their steps, going back to their own cells.
"Who peed in your Cheerios, Foust?" A bass voice laughs.
Adam turns to see a guy with long wavy dark hair and a beard, wearing a snapback. He was small framed and several inches shorter that he and Tim. He was leaning against the wall next to Tim's cell with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Oh, screw you, Avi." Tim says, grabbing Adam's hand tightly as he begins to walk down the cellblock.
Adam glances over his shoulder to see this Avi guy laugh and shake his head as he goes back into his cell right next to Tim's.
"Who was that?" Adam asks as he practically had to run to keep up with Foust's long strides.
"Avi Kaplan." Tim answers as he jogs down the stairs.
"Are yall friends?" Adam asks as he begins to breathe heavily trying to keep up.
"Yeah, I guess so. He's just about the only one I trust besides Chance and Lundquist." Tim answers.
"Wait." Adam stops on the steps trying to catch his breath.
"What?" Tim stops at the bottom of the steps looking up at him.
"Why are you running?" Adam says as he wipes the sweat from his forehead.
"I'm not." Tim smirks. "You are."
"Hey, guys." Chance greets them, holding a styrofoam cup full of coffee. "Where you heading?"
"Just thought I'd show the rookie around." Tim answers.
"Have fun." Chance smiles as he walks past them heading up to Cellblock B.
"Yep." Tim answers as he and Adam head down a corridor. "These double doors to your right is the cafeteria."
He opens the doors and shows Adam inside.
The room was quite large, filled with tables and chairs. A few inmates were sitting at tables drinking coffee and playing checkers. Two armed guards sit nearby drinking coffee and chatting.
"The cafeteria is open from six in the morning until seven in the evening but only serves meals three times a day." Tim says, giving Adam time to observe the place. "The food ain't that great but it's edible. Except don't eat the Thursday night meatloaf. We still haven't figured out what kind of meat they use."
"Okay?" Adam chuckles as he follows Tim further down the corridor and down a flight of stairs.
"Down here are the showers." Tim says. "Never, and let me repeat myself, NEVER come to take a shower alone. Understand?"
"Why?" Adam asks.
"Many a man has been raped down here, some even killed by coming alone." Tim answers. "And the laundry room attendants never sees anything, if you know what I mean."
"Wow, that's scary." Adam says as they walk up to what looks like a laundry room/supply room. "So does that mean I have to shower with you?"
Tim smirks and raises an eyebrow at his roomie.
Adam chuckles and shakes his head. He had a complete feel of trust in his cell mate.
"So what's this?" Adam asks.
"You get your change of clothes here and a towel." Tim says as they walk around a corner revealing a large shower room. Several large laundry tubs sat in the corners. "You throw your dirty clothes in the tubs, take your shower, get dressed and then get the hell out as quickly as possible."
"Definitely not the comforts of home." Adam comments as he sees approximately thirty to forty shower heads lining the walls. "Definitely no privacy."
"Nope." Tim answers as they head out and back up the stairs.
"Sure are a lot of stairs." Adam chuckles.
"You'll get used to them." Tim smiles. "Down the hall from the cafeteria on the left is the Infirmary, next to it is the therapy room."
"I'm supposed to go to therapy, I think." Adam says as he peeks into the window of the therapy room.
"That won't last long. Just tell them what they want to hear and you'll be released. We all have to go through therapy when we first get here." Tim says. "The therapist is Nate Rhodes. The doctor in the Infirmary is Doctor Olusola."
They walk up to a large prison door and Tim rings a buzzer. An armed guard comes out of a guard shack on the other side of the gate.
"Where you heading, Foust?" The guard asks.
"Just giving the rookie a tour of our lovely facility." Tim says with a smirk.
The guard chuckles as he unlocks the gate.
"You have about an hour and a half before lockdown." The guard informs them as he opens the other steel door leading outside.
"Gotcha." Tim nods.
Tim and Adam walk out into 'The Yard', both having to shade their eyes from the bright sunlight.
A large stone wall surrounds the yard, barbwire lines the top of the wall. Guard towers seemed to be everywhere. A tall chain-linked fence divided the yard in half.
"This is where visitation is held on nice days and when the weather is cold or raining it will be in the cafeteria." Tim says as they walk slowly across the yard. "Visitation is heavily guarded with armed guards."
"What's the fence for?" Adam asks looking on the other side of the fence.
"That belongs to Cellblock A. They keep us separated like cows in a livestock barn." Tim chuckles as he lights a cigarette, quickly putting the lighter back into his shirt pocket.
"What are those?" Adam asks, pointing to four large steel box looking things in the distance. They measured about five feet tall and about six feet wide and five feet in length. No windows at all.
"We call it The Oven." Tim answers as he stares out at the structures. "When and inmate does something wrong or becomes unruly, they're put in one of those for a few hours. You're in total darkness and the temperature can easily get 120 degrees or hotter in there during the summer."
"Wow. Have you ever been in there?" Adam asks as they sat down on the ground, taking in the fresh air and the sunshine.
"Once, about a month ago." Tim answers. "There used to be a guard here on the graveyard shift. He was a class A *sshole. The lights go out at 9:00. He expected everyone to be in bed asleep by 9:30 when he made his rounds. If you were still up, well, you got punished. I had just begun to start studying for my GED. So I was studying one night and lost track of time. The next thing I knew, there was a flashlight shining in my face and the b*stard said 'Gotcha'. The next morning he came and got me and stuck me in one of those. He leaves work sort of forgetting to tell anyone I was in there."
"Oh my, God." Adam gasps.
"When they discovered me missing, they searched the entire prison. They were about to report me as an escapee. One of the guards just took a chance and checked the crates. They found me unconscious. I spent three days in the infirmary." Tim says.
"What happened to the guard?" Adam asks.
"He was fired and arrested for attempted murder. I hear he's in a jail downtown." Tim answers with a smile.
"Hey, guys. Suppertime." The guard calls out to them.
