Chapter Forty Nine~ Praying for the Playboy
Lucy watched in slow motion as the car slammed into the side of the bike sending Natsu flying through the air. He hit the ground with a great amount of force. She stood there in shock as to what was happening in front of her as everyone around her panicked. No! No! No! She screamed in her mind. She moved her lips but no words came out. She tried to move her legs but they wouldn't move either. She was frozen in fear, unable to do anything. The only sound she could hear was a loud scream that was emanating from her own body. Finally the scream turned into a word, one word. "Natsu!!!" Her body finally released from the state of shock she was in as she tore off and ran to where he lay in the street.
She fell to her knees beside him, "Natsu! Natsu!" She screamed at him. Come on Natsu! You have to wake up, you have too! We have a deal!" She cried. She could feel someone's large arms pick her up and pull her back as she struggled to break free, she struggled to get back to him. "Let me go! I need to be with him!" She screamed as she flung her arms and legs trying to hit her capture, but it made no difference. They didn't let her go until they had moved her back, and then they let her go but held on to her shoulders. She turned to face her capture, and saw Gajeel looking her dead in her face.
"Listen blondie," He said with a somber expression, "Stay here. Let those who can help him right now be there. You are in no state to help him at this moment. As soon as the ambulance arrives you can get in and go with him, but right now the people that can help him most need that space." Lucy starred up at him ready to scream, yell, fight back, anything, but instead the only thing her body would let her do was lean into Gajeel's chest and cry. He wrapped his arms around her supportively as he watched the scene unfolding in front of him.
When the ambulance arrived, he was placed on a stretcher and lifted into the back, She climbed in the back with him. Everything had been a blur after that, a labyrinth of doctors, nurses, and rooms that consumed her every moment, but she refused to leave his side until he woke up.
Everyone stood in the hospital room starring at the bed that Natsu was lying in. No one moved, no one made a sound as Lucy sat next to him letting the tears fall down her cheek. Every once in a while a machine would beep and Lucy would look up at it to see what it was doing. It had been eight days and there hadn't been much change to his status. No matter how hard Lucy tried to fight it the images of the accident kept playing over and over in her head. If it truly had been an accident though that would have been one thing, but this had been done to him intentionally.
The nurse entered the room, checked his vitals, and then turned around and walked out again. She didn't even bother to look at the faces of the kids in the room anymore. She already knew the expressions that they held. The heartbreak of the one they love laying there in a coma.
Eventually everyone started to leave a little at a time. They would all come and speak to Lucy, but she didn't say much. Just a simple "I'll be okay," or "Thank you." Gray and Juvia were the last two to leave. After Juvia spoke and hugged her blonde friend Gray looked at her for a moment before he turned himself to Juvia, "Juv, Give me a minute with Lucy okay?" He asked quietly.
"Okay," She said as she looked at him with pain in her eyes as she stepped out of the room. The pain wasn't because of jealousy or fear, the pain was because she knew the relationship that the three of them had. Gray had no closer friends then Natsu and Lucy. They were his family, especially since his father had died when he was so young. His mother had remarried and placed him on the back burner as if he was a burden. That was when he had found them. Juvia knew because he had confessed it to her long ago. About how important the two of them were to him. So when they suffered, he suffered too.
When Juvia was out of the room Gray went and bent down in front of Lucy as he stretched his hand out and placed it over hers. "Lucy, you need to rest." She said quietly. "When is the last time you have been home? Washed? Hell even eaten anything? You're looking sick again and that scares me."
Lucy looked up at him with tear stained eyes. "I can't Gray, I can't leave him. He's going to wake up. He has to wake up!" She cried out. "There is so much going on Gray. We we're planning the wedding, I had just moved in with him, everything was falling into place, and.... and...." Her voice cracked as the sobs took over her body.
"And what Lucy?" He asked rubbing her back trying to calm her.
"We had a deal, he has to wake up because I have to tell him...." She trailed off again as she looked at her pinkette laying in the bed looking like he was sleeping rather peacfully.
"You can talk to me Luce." He said as he looked at her concerned at what she needed to say.
She looked lost for a minute before she came back to reality. "He has to wake up, Gray, I have to tell him my secret... I have to tell him we are going to be a family..."
Gray's eyes widened as he looked at her face. "You're???" He started to ask.
"Yes... I'm pregnant." Lucy said as fresh tears fell from her eyes. All Gray could do in that moment was wrap his arms around her and cry too.
