"Did you get one?"
"No, not ye-wait, wait, wait, waiiiit...Ah! I got one!"
(Y/n) laughed at the boy's excited grin while watching him stare fondly at the little goldfish he had caught in his small poi net.
"How many did you get?" the girl asked, turning back to the small tank to continue scooping up the small fish.
"Two," Kirishima tipped his net into a small water-filled bowl he had on his other hand, letting the fish drop into the water to join another fish that was already in it. "Imma name this new one, Red and the other one, Riot! Like my hero name!"
The female sent him an amused side-long glance. "Why am I not surprised?"
"What about you?"
(Y/n) turned her gaze to her own bowl in her left hand and lightly smiled at the three small goldfish swimming around in it.
The two teenagers were playing a game together with other people at one of the booths called kingyo sukui, or goldfish scooping.
"Three."
Kirishima briefly eyed the bowl and turned back to his own fishing activity. "Did you name them?"
The girl snorted. "And why would I name them?"
The boy sent her a 'I know you did' look, earning him an eye-roll from the girl.
(Y/n) took out her poi from the water and gestured to one goldfish in her bowl, "Since they're all males, this one is Katsuki." She gestured to another. "This one's Fireworks." She gently poked another with the tip of her poi. "And this is Lord Explodo-Kill, who will be shortly joined by..." She swiftly returned the poi into the water and diligently scooped up one goldfish before placing it with the others she had caught, "...King Explosion Murder." The girl brought the bowl nearer to her and she smiled at the new addition. "Welcome to the family little guy. It'll be a blast. No pun intended."
A loud guffaw escaped from Kirishima and he nudged (Y/n)'s side with his elbow. "You two look so good together. I can't believe you're not dating."
"Yeah, me neither," (Y/n) pulled a face and resumed back to her fishing. She tried scooping up one more goldfish but her washi paper got torn.
"Shoot," she took out the poi and pouted at the tear in the middle. "I wanted a girl next. I could've named her (Y/n) junior."
Kirishima said nothing and continued to try and fish more goldfish from the pond. (Y/n) discarded her torn poi into a nearby bin and settled for watching Kirishima chase after a few goldfish before his poi also got torn.
The two teenagers got their prize fish bagged into small, translucent, plastic bags to take home. All the way to another booth, (Y/n) couldn't stop laughing at how Kirishima cooed at both Red and Riot as if they were his own children.
Night was quickly falling, which meant that the crowds would grow bigger and bigger as more activities always occurred at night.
So far, (Y/n) and Kirishima had gone to a number of gaming booths before the place had become overrun, which meant that they were left with the food and snacks booths as the last places to go to.
Luckily for the both of them, one of Kirishima's friends owned a mask booth there where they could leave all their stuff for safe-keeping and free their hands.
"So-" the red-haired male whipped around to smile at the girl. "Taiyaki, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, yakitori, onigiri, apple candy or cotton candy. Which one would the beautiful lady like to have first?"
(Y/n) pressed her fingers to her lips to stifle a laugh. "I think she'd like takoyaki first."
"Your wish is my command," Kirishima dramatically made a sweep of his hand and bowed to her. The (h/c)-haired female laughed and playfully punched his shoulder.
"Ow," the boy straightened up to rub his shoulder, all the while still smiling at (Y/n).
The girl rolled her eyes. "Oh shut up. You didn't even feel it. Now come on," she grabbed him by the hand and began pulling him towards the direction of the takoyaki booth. "I'm seriously starving."
Weaving their way through the sea of fellow festival-goers, they finally got to the takoyaki booth and put in their order. They got their order and paid for them before moving to the side to eat their snack. (Y/n) eagerly picked one of the takoyaki by the end of her toothpick and put it into her mouth.
"Oh my, that..." she pointed at the remaining takoyaki with her toothpick and quickly swallowed to speak more clearly. "That is some good shit right there."
"Yeah, it is," Kirishima said in between bites. He then paused before balancing his packet on one hand as the other dug into his pocket to fish out his phone. When he checked it, he frowned. "Awe, we missed the show by ten minutes."
"Hmm? What show?"
"The one for Yume no Sheika," the red-haired male returned his phone into his pocket. "Ya know, the one for your friend."
"Oh." (Y/n) turned her face away to the side and grimaced. Can't exactly say that he's my friend. She looked back at Kirishima. "Do you still wanna go?" Please say no.
Kirishima paused for a bit while in thought and then shook his head. "Nah. Not interested anymore."
Thank fuck. "Huh?" (Y/n) rose an eyebrow. "What do you mean? You seemed pretty excited a week ago."
"Yeah...I mean yeah but," he lifted a shoulder in a half shrug. "Not really my scene."
(Y/n) cast a skeptical eye at him but nodded nevertheless. "Uh...huh...right."
Kirishima continued eating his takoyaki while (Y/n) maintained her gaze on him for a few more seconds.
He had quickly dropped the idea of going to see the show after giving it a moment's thought. Usually, he'd have already dragged her by her collar to the show, late or not. Changing his mind that fast struck her as odd.
Could he have known about Reo's actual personality? Because if he did, only one person could've told him that.
She wasn't mad if that was the case. No, far from it considering the fact that she didn't want to see Reo again in the first place after their talk the previous day.
With a jerk of her shoulder, (Y/n) resumed back to her food before her staring turned weird and chose not to question him about it.
***
Kirishima and (Y/n) stood on a small hill overlooking the festival. They were waiting for the fireworks display to start along with a few couples who had decided to join them.
Both teenagers weren't talking to each other as (Y/n) was busy taking in the beautiful view of the festival from up above while Kirishima was busy on his phone.
(Y/n) paid no heed to the boy beside her. She didn't want to ask him who was taking up all his attention as it wasn't any of her business. It wasn't like it was a date. They were just hanging out. They were both free to do whatever they wanted to.
The girl shivered when a cold breeze blew over her and instinctively wrapped her arms around herself, grateful that she had carried a jacket just in case.
The night was beautiful that day and the festival below them was lit up with lively, pretty lights in contrast to the hill they were on. Faint music and excited chatter could be heard from where they are and (Y/n) could imagine how loud it must've been down there. The girl then heaved out a wistful sigh and looked up at the star-filled night sky. The corner of her mouth turned up.
It would've been really nice to have gone to the festival with Katsuki, if he had invited her to go in the first place that is. She hadn't talked to him all day and she was really missing him. The previous days were filled with awkward stolen glances and not-so-accidental brushing of hands. She wanted normalcy for once. A different kind of normalcy. Fuck she really missed him.
Outloud, it would've sounded borderline clingy but she didn't care. To her, the fireworks display would've been a little brighter if Katsuki was with her. Not that she had any problem watching it with Kirishima but still.
(Y/n) faltered, her head lowering. Now that she thought about it...
"Hey Eijiro?" she turned to the boy. "Why did you ask me out?"
The boy's eyes darted up from his phone and moved left to right before he shook his head. "Oh, no important reason."
(Y/n)'s eyes narrowed to pinpricks and her lips pursed lightly. "So you just asked me out because you felt like it?"
"Something like that," he said, his response giving no room for any more questions but (Y/n) was having none of it.
The female sized him up with scrutinizing eyes and frowned. He was acting really odd. Like he was hiding something.
A thought crossed her mind and she immediately brushed it off. But the more he continued avoiding her gaze, the more the possibility gnawed in her brain. Better out with it before it ate her up.
"Hey." Kirishima met her narrowed eyes. "You don't like me or something, right?"
"Oh uh...wow." A small blush tinged on the boy's cheeks at the blunt question and he nervously scratched the back of his neck. "Look (Y/n)...I don't really like you."
(Y/n)'s mouth fell wide open in surprise and her face heated up. "Oh...okay." She cringed. "This is embarrassing."
"I didn't mean like that. I meant I only like you as a friend." Kirishima sent her a sheepish smile and placed an assuring hand on her shoulder. "Sorry if I gave you all the wrong signals."
"No." (Y/n) shook her head and returned the smile. "I'm the one who should apologize. It's pretty much my fault for making all these false assumptions."
"It's okay." the male dropped his hand from her shoulder and casually shrugged. "Besides, you're not really my type."
"Now hold on just a minute there." (Y/n) jabbed a finger at his chest while chuckling. "I'm everyone's type."
"Right. Just not mine." Kirishima ruffled her hair, earning a playful swat from (Y/n). The boy laughed and looked at a place somewhere over her head, his smile widening. "Besides, you're meant to be with someone else."
"Huh?" (Y/n) stopped to send him a confused look. "What do you me-"
"Ah, right on time!" Kirishima cut her off to speak to someone behind her. "What took you so long, buddy?"
(Y/n) pivoted around to see who he was speaking to and her heart palpitated.
"Do you know how fucking hard it is to find your shitty face in this fucking place?" Katsuki scowled at the smiling red-head once he stopped in front of the two. His eyes met with startled (e/c) ones and his scowl softened a tad bit. "Hey."
"Hi." she breathed out, taken aback by the fact that she wasn't speechless because her throat felt completely dry at that moment. (Y/n) thanked the heavens that none of the boys had a mind-reading Quirk because the level of internal screaming exuding out from her brain at that moment would've fried their brains within seconds.
"Well," Kirishima wrapped his arms around Katsuki and (Y/n)'s shoulders and pulled them to each of his sides. "That's my cue. Gotta go now."
"Get the fuck off me sharkmouth," Katsuki roughly pushed off the boy's arm, leaving (Y/n) still in Kirishima's hold. "Deal's a deal, now fuck off."
Deal? (Y/n) frowned as she looked back and forth between the two boys. What deal?
"Chasing me away so soon?" Kirishima's lips quirked up into a smirk and Katsuki extended his middle finger toward him. Unfazed, Kirishima laughed and turned to (Y/n). "What's with the face (Y/n)? No worries, I'll pick up our stuff and leave you two while you do your thing, okay?"
Do our thing? "Uh..."
Kirishima chuckled at her utter confusion and let her go but not without gently pushing her towards Katsuki. "Have fun!"
(Y/n) looked back at the boy who was already walking away and grimaced. He had left her alone. He had left her alone with him. The traitor!
Awkwardly clearing her throat, (Y/n) turned to look back at Katsuki and found him already staring at her.
Cue more internal screams.
"...Hi."
"Can't believe you still came to this shitty place." Katsuki turned away from her to look into the distance.
"Well," (Y/n) played around with her middle finger as she shuffled next to him. "You're also in this shitty place too so..."
"Piss off."
(Y/n) giggled. The uncomfortable air between them was slowly starting to disperse and it warmed her heart. She dismissed the idea of asking Katsuki about the deal Kirishima was talking about as she didn't want to ruin the moment.
"Why the fuck would you want to watch some stupid lights anyway?" Katsuki curled his lip towards the sky as if it had teargassed his mother. "I can do fucking better than those tiny sparks."
(Y/n) snorted and bumped her shoulder against his side. "Sure you can."
"Hah?" Katsuki sent a threatening glare. "What's that supposed to fucking mean?!"
The (h/c)-haired female gave him an unconcerned look and shrugged. "Fireworks are nice. Despite the fact that they can be quite dangerous and volatile when you go near them, they still manage to light up the skies in the prettiest ways I've ever seen." Was she still talking about the explosive device or the human embodiment of them? Either way, Katsuki also seemed to have noticed the subtle change of subject as a blush was visible on his cheeks. (Y/n)'s face mimicked his and she nearly shut her mouth but she couldn't. Not when she was already so close. "So, why wouldn't I like fireworks?"
Katsuki's eyes widened a bit and he cast his gaze to the side. "...You're an idiot."
(Y/n) pursed her lips to stop the smile that was threatening to take over and stepped closer to Katsuki's side.
"I'm your idiot."
Katsuki remained silent and (Y/n) didn't mind. There was no need for words. It was finally happening. She was happy. Their moment of silence didn't last long as a voice was heard from afar which was accompanied by loud explosions of fireworks from above, their vivid colors igniting the black sky. Each one drew a pattern into the sky, something unique and breathtaking, like the stars behind were only a backdrop brought in for the occasion.
Katsuki, bored as he came, was less interested in the display than in watching (Y/n)'s expressions from the periphery of his eye, how they lit up her face just as she smiled. He looked around the hill and noticed that all the other couples had taken to kissing each other, something that made him twist his face in disgust. He sent one last quick glance at (Y/n) and his eyes fell on her hand at her side. He immediately averted his eyes away and cursed under his breath, his face reddening at the thought of what he was about to.
(Y/n) was completely enthralled with the colorful display in the sky that she wasn't remotely prepared for the hard shove that was delivered to her shoulder. Yelping in surprise, she stumbled and nearly fell to the ground if it weren't for the hand that shot out to grasp her own. Katsuki pulled her to stand up straight but didn't let go of her hand.
Slightly recovered from the shock of the near fall, (Y/n) turned to give Katsuki an accusing and questioning look.
"Shut up." Katsuki snapped and turned his fiery eyes away from her so that she wouldn't see his fierce blush. "You looked stupid. I was fixing it."
(Y/n), accustomed to his weird antics, simply rolled her eyes and smiled. She realized that he was still holding her hand and her smile widened at the fluttery feeling in her chest.
Well, that was one way to get her to hold his hand.
"Oi, dumbass."
(Y/n) hadn't noticed that she had been staring endlessly at nothing in particular until he had called her out of her thoughts. She turned to him with a curious look. "What is it?"
"Lemme do that for you," Katsuki said, not once looking at her.
(Y/n) tilted her head. "Do what?"
"...Make you smile."
Heart stop.
(Y/n) froze, air completely stolen out of her lungs with a simple request. Heat crept up her ears and she couldn't fight against the even bigger smile that forced its way to her lips. She even had to bite down on her bottom lip to stifle the embarrassing giggles that bubbled in her chest.
She cleared her throat and looked away from him because if she did look at him, she would've have melted in more ways than one. He had rendered her speechless but she knew that she'd have to answer him soon.
And she chose to by entwining their fingers together and squeezing his hand lightly. Katsuki seemed to have gotten the message as his shoulders slightly relaxed with relief and subtly released the breath he had held.
For the remainder of the display, Katsuki and (Y/n) didn't let go of each other's hands and watched in silence, reveling in each other's company.
***
(Y/n) and Katsuki walked hand in hand as Katsuki escorted the former home. Eventually, after the festival, the two teenagers had ended up taking a walk around the city while talking about anything that came to their minds. Well, (Y/n) was the one who did most of the talking while Katsuki listened, occasionally giving remarks if need be.
And due to that, (Y/n) had lost track of time and only came to that realization when she checked her phone and saw that it was nearing midnight, which ensued in them taking a detour home.
"We're here," (Y/n) turned to him when they arrived at her home. She tried not to sound too disappointed but who was she kidding? She was devastated.
"Go on," Katsuki inclined his head sideways, indicating her door. "Piss off. I'll see you tomorrow."
(Y/n) smiled at the promise in his words. "Okay. Bye."
She turned to leave but as she went to walk away, she was yanked back by the hand that was still holding hers. She whipped around to ask what was wrong when a hand grabbed her by her collar and a pair of slightly chapped lips collided with hers.
Her eyes flew wide open in shock as she tried to wrap her head around what was happening. The kiss was a little rough, messy, a clash of teeth in the beginning but nothing that couldn't be dismissed. Otherwise, it didn't contain the famed sparks always mentioned in books as it felt very normal. A good normal though.
The kiss ended as soon as it started and Katsuki released his hold on her while parting away, also letting go of her hand in the process. His face was similar to (Y/n)'s; completely flushed. His eyes were never still and he didn't look at her except in passing.
Meanwhile, (Y/n) was still reeling from the surprise. Blinking rapidly, she opened her mouth to say something but immediately closed it after when she realized she didn't know what to say. She shakily sighed and looked away from him.
Say something!
"That was um..." she faltered off to find the right words to say. "...Weird."
Katsuki let out a small scoff. "No kidding."
(Y/n) risked a peek at Katsuki from the corner of her eye and smiled. Blushing did quite a number on him.
"Do you..." she nervously played with her fingers and built up enough courage to ask him. "Do you wanna try it again?"
Katsuki shrugged, still not looking at her but (Y/n) had caught something along the lines of 'sure' or 'whatever'.
That being enough for her, (Y/n) stepped closer to him until they were nearly chest to chest and he finally looked at her. From a closer proximity, (Y/n) noticed some things she had never took note of. His prominent jawline, cut facial features, blazing red eyes that always held a glare and seemed to be staring at one's soul, his default scowl- he was admittedly handsome.
Slowly, nervous hands worked their way up to hold the back of his neck to lower him down to her level as she tiptoed to reach up to him, all while Katsuki watched her. The boy then leaned down to close the distance and their lips met in a lighter but more sweeter kiss than before.
Heart pounding, completely engulfed in his presence and cologne that she loved so much, (Y/n) tilted her head to the side, noses brushing against each other, and deepened the kiss. Katsuki's hands gripped her waist and pushed her closer to him as (Y/n)'s arms wrapped around his neck. No sound filled the neighborhood as everyone was either inside or asleep, the only movement outside being the two teenagers satisfying the one desire they've harbored for so long.
Their lips moved together in a slightly chaste kiss, in perfect sync, and with no tongue. The indescribable feeling that burst in waves from within (Y/n) made her weak in the knees and she could only describe it in two words as her hands wove into his spiky hair.
Absolutely breathtaking.
***
After they'd reluctantly parted several kisses later and Katsuki had gone home, (Y/n) slunk through the door of her house, careful not to make any noise that could alert Nanami of her entrance. She pressed her body against the door and began to slowly close it. Suddenly, the door loudly creaked and she tensed up. She held her breath, completely frozen and eyes tightly closed as she waited for her name to be called out.
When no voice came, she blew out her cheeks with a sigh of relief and relaxed. She then closed the door all the way and proceeded to toe off her shoes as silently as she could.
When she turned around to walk into the house, she froze in her tracks. A string of silent curses fell from her lips upon seeing the kitchen light on and she instantly knew that she was going to die that night. She was sure that Nanami had heard her come in and was probably waiting up for her with a lecture to give.
Maybe she doesn't even know I'm back. I could make a run for it to my room before she realizes. (Y/n) anxiously tapped her foot on the ground as she carefully weighed her options. As much as she tried to think there was, there was no point in evading Nanami. Even if she did, either way, they live in the same house and Nanami would question her whereabouts. Obviously, the best choice then would be to go to the kitchen and get the lecture over and done with.
God, she hated lectures.
All she wanted to do was just go up to her room and giggle into her pillow until she fell asleep but apparently, that wouldn't happen until after her lecture.
Fuck it all.
(Y/n) took in a deep breath. Okay. Act cool. Act like you were just going to get something from the fridge to eat. Act natural and calm. She wouldn't even notice...probably...hopefully? Shit. A dreading expression washed over (Y/n)'s face before it quickly disappeared with a shake of her head.
Giving herself a mental pat on the shoulder and one last encouraging thought, she decided to finally make her appearance in the kitchen. Upon entering, her eyes immediately fell on her aunt, who was leaning back against the kitchen island. The adult was staring at a letter in her hands with inexplicable shock written all over her face.
Alright...not what I expected...the girl furrowed her eyebrows at the woman as she passed her to head over to the fridge.
"What's up with you? Bill come up too high?" she threw over her shoulder as she reached out to open the fridge door. "I told you to throw out that water heater."
No answer. Not even a glance towards her direction. (Y/n) looked over her shoulder to send her aunt a confused look and her eyebrows pinched together when she met her aunt's eyes. Nanami was now staring at her with eyes that carried a mixture of shock and barely contained any anger. It made her uneasy.
Okay, she didn't even mention about me being late. This is getting really weird. "What?"
Nanami heaved out a shaky breath and pressed a hand to her throat. Worry was visible all over her tired face, accentuated by her unusually disheveled hair and the bags under her eyes. The earlier on dread was replaced by a sick, churning feeling that broiled within (Y/n)'s stomach as her mind came up with the worst case scenarios that could accompany the letter in Nanami's hands.
She had seen enough movies to have an inkling of what could be written in that letter. Most of the time it was usually test results that ran positive for some kind of incurable disease like cancer or something.
Oh, how she hoped it was just the electricity bill.
"Aunt, is...is something wrong?" she pushed the fridge door close and turned around to fully face her, unsettled by the woman's prolonged silence and haunted look. "You can tell me, you know."
"Oh, sweetheart..." the woman choked out, one hand going up to her chest and was that a look of sympathy?
Oh no, it was. Isn't that the look a parent always gave their child when they knew that they were one day going to pass and leave them all alone?
"Yes? What is it? Come on, tell me. You're worrying me," (Y/n) hoped her voice didn't sound as terrified as she was on the inside for the incoming news.
"This letter...someone slipped it under the door and..."
Oh no. There are tears in her eyes. She doesn't know how to tell me. I can handle it, right? If she leaves me, I can handle it. Right?
"It just came and-" Nanami cut herself with a sigh before licking her lips to prepare herself to say what was next. "Honey, your parents...your parents are-they're dead..."
(Y/n) paled, eyes widening as her lips parted in shock.
"Oh."
