Chappy 49

(Y/n) stared at the TV in boredom. Katsuki had left hours before, reluctantly, to go school. He had given her specific orders not to step foot out of her hospital bed or otherwise he'd kill her himself.

That was considered impossible because how would she go to the bathroom then?

To make things worse, she didn't have her phone with her. She had left it in her bag which she gave to the woman at the fire scene. She was sure that Shouto had tried to call her only to get no response. He must've been worried sick out of his mind. Not that she could do anything about it anyway. She didn't know the woman or if she still had her bag and school jacket in the first place.

All she was left with now was to just stare at the cartoon she had zero interest in.

A series of knocks resounded from her door and she lazily turned her head towards its direction.

"Come in..." she drawled in a bored voice as she waited for the person to enter.

The door opened, revealing two faces that (Y/n) never thought she'd see together.

"(Y/n)!!/ Sweetheart!!" both Nanami and Mitsuki said in tandem as they walked towards the astounded girl.

"Uh...hi?"

How do these two know each other again?

"(Y/n)! Guess who I just met in the lobby looking for you?" Nanami gesticulated at Mitsuki. "Katsuki's mom! I just saw her and their resemblance threw me off. I knew they had to be related...And I was right!"

"Oh...that's nice," (Y/n) smiled at Mitsuki. "It's nice to see you again."

"It's nice to see you too, dear. We heard what happened. I'm so glad you're okay now," Mitsuki smiled and placed her hand on her chest. "How're you feeling?"

"I feel-" the girl began but stopped upon noticing the women's knowing expressions. "You guys know?"

"Yes," Nanami nodded. "When the doctor called, all I heard was that you experienced chest trauma and I didn't wait to hear the rest. I hanged up and ran here. I guess coming here all those times, I never gave them the chance to tell me what really happened, only asking how you're doing," her expression dulled. "But coming back today, they told me everything. Well, us, everything. I...didn't know what to say honestly. Or feel."

"Don't feel weird about it," (Y/n) pleaded, wincing a bit over the image of Nanami freaking out.

Instead, Nanami furrowed her eyebrows and exchanged a look with Mitsuki before smiling at (Y/n). "Why would I feel weird about it? You don't know how happy I am!"

The girl shot her a confused look. "You...are?"

"Not with the dying part. No," she laughed. "I'm happy because you're here. Alive. With us. So why should I dwell on the fact that you died instead of celebrating the fact that you're not?"

"You're right," (Y/n) shrugged and picked on her nails. "I still find it a bit weird though..."

"Of course you do! But you shouldn't worry about that. You're alright and that's all that matters!" Mitsuki chuckled while winking at her.

(Y/n) simply smiled wordlessly. She was glad that they didn't treat her like a risen zombie, even if it still bothered her a bit.

"Anyway! I'm just here to give you this," Mitsuki continued and held up the bag she was carrying. "There's a get well card inside and cookies. Lots of them because I know how much you love them!"

(Y/n)'s eyes lit up at her words and eyed the bag hungrily. "Thanks!"

"Anytime dear," the woman laughed at the eager girl as she handed her the bag. (Y/n) took out the card first and smiled at the little Scooby-Doo cartoon character drawn at the front. The card was purple with the rest of the Mystery Inc. gang drawn on various corners of the card, along with their van as the centerpiece. It was adorable, to say the least.

"It's from all of us. Even that nitwit I call a son," Mitsuki informed, earning a funny look from Nanami, who was surprised by how she addressed Katsuki.

"Don't worry. They're like that," (Y/n) clarified to Nanami, making her nod in understanding with her lips formed in an 'oh'.

(Y/n) read through the card, a heartfelt warmth bubbling in her chest at their concern.

"Aaww thanks," she cooed as she placed the card on her table.

"You're welcome honey," Mitsuki took (Y/n)'s hand and patted it fondly. "Just get better, okay?"

"Okay."

"Well, I should be leaving now," she announced as she began walking towards the door. She then stopped and looked back at (Y/n). "Oh and when you see that son of mine, tell him to get his ass home."

(Y/n) knitted her eyebrows together. "Before he left he said that he's going home."

"Huh?" the woman stared at her quizzically. "I left my house just an hour ago. I didn't see him."

"He left seven hours ago."

"Oh," Mitsuki nodded before her frown twisted in a grin. "He's probably avoiding me because he didn't come home last night. Well, I guess I'm just gonna have to go home and wait for him to come home so I can kill him before he dodges me again. Okay bye now!"

The woman waved at the two before leaving the room.

Nanami looked back at (Y/n) and chuckled. "She really is his mother."

"You should hear how they talk to each other," (Y/n) giggled in amusement, recalling all the conversations they've had in front of her.

"Well, I should also get going too," Nanami announced and stood up from the chair.

(Y/n) pouted in disappointment. "Already? I'm gonna be so bored alone."

"I have to get back to work honey," Nanami said and kissed the top of the girl's head. "I just came by during my break. I don't have a lot of time."

(Y/n)'s pout increased and she glared at her aunt. Nanami laughed at her childish behavior and shook her head.

"You're going to be fine. Besides, have you talked to Shouto? The poor boy's been trying to get in touch with you."

The girl sighed and shook head. "I don't even know where my phone is in the first place."

"You lost it?" the woman scowled in annoyance.

"I don't know," (Y/n) shrugged earning a weary sigh from Nanami.

"You know what? Just forget about it. I'll get you another one when I can. But for now, focus on getting well now, okay? You have everything you need, yes?"

"Yep."

"Okay, bye now sweetie," Nanami smiled at her before leaving the room.

(Y/n) was left once again to her thoughts and boredom.

Suddenly, she found herself missing Katsuki's company. He had promised to be back soon and she was getting unusually impatient.

She let out a yawn, deciding instead to sleep instead of drowning in boredom.

(Y/n) gobbled down the cookies Mitsuki had brought her as she watched a documentary on the National Geographic channel.

She had just woken up four hours ago, only to be disappointed that Katsuki hadn't yet returned.

(Y/n) chewed on the cookies in distemper. She didn't know the reason why she was angry with him for not coming back as promised but all she knew was that he was getting a piece of her mind once he came back.

If he came back that is...

During the day, she had received visits from her classmates, who were happy to finally see her awake and even some of her teachers. The dreaded visit from Aizawa led to her being lectured for thirty minutes straight with her being forced to agree that the next time she used her Quirk out in public, she'd be punished. He had also gone ahead to explain that the only reason why she and Katsuki were being allowed to go free with only a slap on the wrist was because they had saved four lives, something more important than punishments. Other than that, he wished her a good recovery and that by the time, she went back to school, she should've caught up with the others and done all the homework. In other words, that was his punishment for embarrassing him.

Other than that, some pro-heroes also visited her to praise her for her heroic work. However, they didn't fail to scold her for her recklessness that led to her getting injured.

The good thing was that only a handful of people knew of her death while all the others believed the monkeyshine the doctors had cooked up.

She didn't have a problem with it though, as she too supported the idea of her death kept under the wraps. She herself hadn't gotten over the fact that she died and she didn't want others to know. She didn't want them to find it weird.

But the other thing was Shouto.

She still wasn't decided yet on telling him and dealing with his reaction.

The door swung open abruptly, revealing the one person (Y/n) wanted to see. She shot Katsuki a glare, though inside, she couldn't deny the excitement she felt upon seeing him. Her earlier on gall with him had disappeared into thin air.

"You're late."

"Shut up! That old hag wouldn't give me some fucking piece of mind," he clicked his tongue in irritation before throwing her school bag on the bed.

(Y/n) stared at the bag before pulling her it closer to her. She opened it and rummaged inside, finding everything she had left in it intact. She thought she had lost it to the explosion, or worse, got stolen.

"Um," she turned to Kastuki. "How did you...?"

"The lady you gave it to brought it." Katsuki plopped down on the couch while taking out his phone. "There's also supposed to a card or something in there, I don't know."

Curious, the girl looked into the bag again, only now noticing the white card at the bottom. She pulled it out and stared at the shiny, purple cover of the card. The words 'Get Well' were written at the front in white glitter with the picture of a purple bear giving her a thumbs up under them.

She smiled as she opened the card to read it.

Her eyes lit up when she saw who it was from.

"Hey," she chuckled and turned to Katsuki. "It's from beam guy. It's nice to know that there's no hard feelings between us for throwing him out the window."

The boy gave her a blank look. "Who?"

She frowned. "The guy who we found first trapped under the beam. Guy with the cat ears."

"Oh him," he nonchalantly said as he went back to his phone. He then added as an afterthought. "What did he say?"

She looked back at the card. "He says 'I heard of the unfortunate thing that happened to you during the fire incident. I'm really sorry about what happened. No matter how many times I try to think otherwise, I still can't help but feel like it's my fault for putting such a young, nice girl in the hospital. However, I hope that you get well. I don't know how I can properly thank you for saving me but if I can, I will visit you while you're still in the hospital. My wife and I thank you so much for bringing us back together. And this includes our..." her eyes widened. "...Fourteen children'..."

(Y/n) and Katsuki exchanged bewildered looks. Then...

"Bunnies do fuck a lot."

(Y/n) furrowed her eyebrows, ignoring the riling feeling that churned in her gut when he said that. "Don't cats eat bunnies?"

Katsuki smirked. "Depends on your definition of eat."

(Y/n) gave him a funny look before looking away from him.

"I'm gonna-" the girl cleared her throat and looked back down at her card. "Pretend you didn't say that for the sake of my mind."

Katsuki scoffed a laugh as she returned the card back into her bag. She then looked back at him to find him staring at her.

"Did you get any card?" (Y/n) gave a half-smile.

Katsuki scowled and extended his middle finger towards her, making her laugh.

She then took out her phone from the bag and turned it on. Her eyebrows rose when she saw that her phone was at ninety-eight percent. If she could recall perfectly, her phone was at ten percent when she left the arcade.

The girl smiled. The woman must've charged it for her.

She awaited the notifications to come in and when they did, she was even tempted to put it on silent. She had fifteen missed calls from Nanami and thirteen from Shouto. She also had a couple of messages from him and other classmates.

He must be so worried. (Y/n) sighed and dialed his number. She didn't wait for long before he picked it up.

"(Y/n)! Thank God! I heard what happened! Are you okay?!"

The girl chuckled silently at his worried state. "Hello to you too."

"Don't you scare me like that!" he continued, ignoring her light words. "I tried calling you and you weren't picking up. So I tried your aunt and she told me you're in the hospital. What were you thinking?! Putting yourself in danger like that?!"

(Y/n) rubbed her temples, his scolding words ringing a familiar bell on how she scolded him after the Hero Killer fiasco. "I had to do something Shouto. Isn't that what heroes do?"

Shouto went silent for a moment before sighing in defeat. He fell silent for a while before muttering. "This is all his fault."

(Y/n) furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head. "What? No. It's not. It was my decision to save those people. I practically dragged Katsuki into it."

Upon hearing his name, the ash-blond looked at her, now interested in the conversation. (Y/n), however, was deeply engrossed in defending Katsuki to notice his eyes on her.

"Haven't you noticed that every single time you do something out of character, you're always with him?" Shouto countered, anger starting to seep into his voice. "And every single time, it's always the same excuse. That you dragged him into it."

"Why are you suddenly angry?" (Y/n) asked, her tone rising up due to her own vexation. "I don't get it! I'm simply telling you the truth. It's not his fault! And why are you bringing up other things that are not of importance right now?!"

The line went silent for a second before Shouto sighed.

"Because you've not been acting like yourself these past few weeks," he said. All the previous anger from his voice had been sucked out, leaving behind a controlled tone. "Don't you think it's a bit unusual that it happens only when you're with him?"

(Y/n) paused, mouth wide open. She then shook her head. "What are you even talking about? I've been the same girl I-

"Just not the same one I met five years ago."

His words sent a jolt of pain straight to her heart and she felt it sink to her stomach. All the words she had planned to say to him had immediately blanked out of her mind, leaving behind the solitary words 'You have changed. You're not the same girl I used to love back then'. True, he hadn't said those exact words but didn't they mean the exact same as what he said?

The girl looked down at her hand and ran her tongue across her upper teeth. She began picking at a loose thread unraveling from the hem of her blanket and she pursed her lips. Her expression had dulled, and Katsuki had taken note of it as his scowl became more prominent.

"I-I have to go," she struggled to not to lose to the heaviness her heart felt. "I'm sorry."

"Look, (Y/n)," he quickly said. "This is the first time we've had a real conversation in weeks, and you decide to bail on me in the middle of it?"

She took in a sharp breath and looked up at the ceiling. "I have something I need to do...right now. We can talk later, okay?"

Shouto let out a long, suppressed sigh. He fell silent for a moment before second before he finally spoke.

"Fine. I love-

"Bye."

She hung up. She let the phone fall to her lap before pinching the bridge of her nose and closed her eyes as she inhaled deeply. Ugh, I didn't come back for this shit.

"Hey, you okay?"

(Y/n) opened her eyes to turn to Katsuki who had taken a seat beside her. He had his eyebrows knitted but his eyes were softened in concern for her.

The girl exhaled and laid back on her bed. She turned her gaze back on the ash-blond and sent him a small smile.

"I know you heard," she began in an apologetic tone. "I'm sorry that he thinks you're to blame for this."

Katsuki clicked his tongue and rolled his eyes. "I don't care what that Canada flag thinks! What I care about is you staying calm. If you get another heart failure, I'll choke you."

(Y/n) giggled, earning a scowl from him. The girl's eyes fell on his hand that was on the bed and she reached out to take it. Katsuki watched her hand as she interlaced her fingers with his.

He looked up at her to find her smiling at him. A blush appeared on his cheeks before he quickly frowned and turned away from her gaze.

(Y/n) smiled and squeezed his hand. The feeling of his hand had managed to slowly calm her down and return her heart rate to normal. It also didn't fail to make her warm inside.

She didn't regret a single word she had said to Shouto. It was one thing to say she had changed but it was another to blame him for her death, albeit unknowingly. He had always been on Katsuki's case ever since (Y/n) became close with him and she had just about enough of it. Plus, he simply had no right to blame Katsuki for what happened to her or anything for that matter.

Because Katsuki saved her life. And he was there for her even after.

And whether Shouto knew that or not, he still didn't have the right.

***

Hours later into the night found (Y/n) still awake and busy playing a game on her phone as music blared from her earphones. Meanwhile, Katsuki was fast asleep, his headphones still in place and the music still playing.

The door swung open and the girl looked up from her phone. It was her doctor and he was there to give her the last dose of the day.

(Y/n) paused her music and took out her earphones just in case he decided to talk to her. She quit her game and placed her phone on her lap as she watched him take out the tube attached to her cannula.

"Finally, I never thought it'd be off so I can walk without dragging that thing around," she muttered in relief making the doctor chuckle.

"You're getting better. You're now fully hydrated which is a good sign," he explained as he took the empty bag from the rack.

(Y/n) hummed in response and stared at her cannula in deep thought.

"Is something wrong?" the doctor asked her in concern.

"No...ugh, it's just that...I suddenly remembered I died. And started feeling...um, weird," she then sighed and looked up at the doctor. "Am I the only one secretly freaking out about the fact that I came back to life? I mean, look at you. You look...like you've seen this happen every day."

The man smiled as he inserted a syringe into a bottle. "Do you expect me to start freaking out?"

"Maybe..."

"Now tell me," he began while injecting the medicine into the cannula, making her wince a bit. "If I, the doctor, the one who's supposed to treat you, starts panicking, what do you expect the patient to do?"

(Y/n) shrugged. "Get a heart attack?"

The male laughed and nodded. "Well said. Now, we as doctors train ourselves to keep a cool head even in the most bizarre of situations. Treat them like normal occurrences. It's not easy but we have no choice. Our calmness will also reflect on the patient and keep them calm."

(Y/n) nodded in understanding before pointing at the sleeping Katsuki. "Okay...what about him? He looks pretty fine with it. And as far as I know, he's no doctor."

"Him?" the doctor glanced at Katsuki as he gathered his equipment. "Oh yes. We briefed him after you were stabilized and fell asleep. Told him to treat you normally once you woke up, like a patient who was simply unconscious. If he did, then the brain will gradually condition itself to believe in that. We do that with everyone who has knowledge of what happened. And the way I see it, he's doing pretty well. Plus, there's no use in dwelling on the negativity of death when here you are, alive and well. We just accept it and move on with life."

The girl looked down at her palm and rubbed at the spot where the cannula's syringe was inserted. "Guess so...that still doesn't make it not weird."

"Haha, don't worry. You too will get used to it over time. Besides, in this world where Quirks are in abundance, I think anything's pretty much possible. I've seen unexplainable things happen that I still can't wrap my head around," the grey-eyed male said.

"Oh yeah?" she looked up and arched an eyebrow in challenge.

"Yes!" he beamed and knitted his eyebrows in thought. "I once had a patient who's still alive today considering the fact his stomach and half his respiratory system is gone."

"Wow," the girl gaped at him in disbelief and fascination. "That's...amazing."

"You have no idea," he winked knowingly at her.

Suddenly I feel like my death was child's play. (Y/n) bit the inside of her cheek as her eyes fell on her lap.

"So is he your boyfriend?"

"Huh?" the girl darted her head up towards Katsuki and back to the doctor. "No. He's not. Why?"

He shrugged and smiled innocently. "Just asking."

(Y/n) narrowed his eyes at him in suspicion as he began making his way towards the door.

"Well, goodnight now," he waved at her before leaving.

The girl sighed and relaxed back into the bed. She turned her head towards the sleeping Katsuki and a small smile crept up her lips. He looked so peaceful even though he frowned a bit while asleep.

She recalled back to her argument with Shouto and a scowl instantly replaced her smile.

He's wrong about you Katsuki. She thought with a stand, shaking her head to banish the thoughts from her mind.

She threw the covers off her legs and got off the bed. Her bare feet landed on the cold tile floor making her shudder. She ignored the cold feeling pressing against her naked soles as she started pulling the top blanket off her bed.

Once it was off, she silently carried to where Katsuki was and placed it at the end of the couch before gently removing the headphones from over his head. When it was off, she paused the music and placed his phone and headphones on the table set beside the couch. She then gently covered him with the blanket. She sat on the arm of the sofa just above his head and stared at him for a while, admiring his tranquil state.

Cautiously, she brought her hand to his face and gently brushed the tips of her fingers over his hairline. His eyebrows twitched and she paused, holding her breath. However, he didn't wake up and she sighed before continuing her ministrations.

"Hey," she called out to the boy sitting across from her on his bed. They were in his room at the motel after a day of roaming around the city.

"What," he looked up from his phone.

"You know I'm gonna outlive you, right?" (Y/n) said as she dug her fingers into the packet of chips.

Katsuki scoffed. "How are you so sure?"

"Coz...you put yourself more in danger than I do. Won't be a surprise if you die before me," she threw in a chip into her mouth, smiling knowingly at Katsuki.

A throbbing vein popped out of his temple as he glared at the girl on his bed. "Is that a challenge?!!"

"It could be. The last of our last. The ultimate challenge," she smirked. "The one who dies first loses."

Katsuki gave her a strange look.

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard and you're fucking crazy," he commented. He then added after a pause. "Deal."

"I'm totally winning by the way, just sayin'" she ignored Katsuki's glare and flicked his nose. "And it's a promise."

(Y/n) sighed at the memory and the corner of her mouth lifted up into a faint smile.

"I'm sorry I didn't keep my promise. You must've hated that," she said in a soft voice as she continued tracing his hairline. "But...thanks for helping me keep it at least."

She got no response, naturally, only his soft breathing and occasional eyebrow twitch. Probably dreaming.

"Goodnight Fireworks."

The girl softly snorted and patted his head before standing up to head back to her bed.
