In the media, the badguy will often hold the main character at gun point and say something like "Do it or I'll kill you." Or in one way or another get the main character to cooperate  by threatening the character's life.

Here's the thing, in real life, cooperating like that is the WORST thing you could do!
Lets use a scenario similar to the one I used in the "Be ware, be alert." Chapter.
You're walking down the street/sidewalk,  and a car stops nearby. The driver rolls down his/her window and tells you to get in the car or he/she will shoot you.

Do NOT get in that car.

There at a few reasons why this is true:

1. You'll probably end up dead at some point anyway. And even if you survive, the chances of escape are slim to none, and the life you will have will make you wish you were dead.

2. The person is likely bluffing. Here's the thing, if he/she was going to kill you, he/she would have done it already.

3. Depending on the distance, there's a chance the person could miss. Guns aren't perfect, and depending on the gun, and the person firing it, you could survive.

So what should you do in this situation?

I should clarify before I say anything else that this is not from experience, I have not ever been held at gun point, but this is my observation based off of various cases and things that my parents and grandparents have taught me when we discussed survival skills and what to do in various emergencies.

So here at a few tips my mom and I came up with when we discussed this topic:

1. Scream as loud as you can. If you're in a place where people might be nearby (A parking lot next to an open store or business, a suburban neighborhood, etc.) Most likely someone will hear you. And even if you are shot, they'll be witnesses and you have a better chance of being taken to the hospital to recover.

2. Run away. When you start  screaming you don't want to stand still, you'll want to try and get as far away from the person as you can. (Preferably closer to a place where People might be like a house or open building etc.)

There is always that chance that you could still get killed, but you have a better chance at survival this way. Also, even if you don't survive, the police will have a much easier time avenging you and preventing the person (people in some cases) from doing this to anyone else.

And your family will know exactly what happened to you. They won't have to struggle to keep their hope alive for years on end, give up everything they have to find you, only to discover that you've been murdered already...in a much more gruesome way than you would have been if you had not cooperated.

Now, hopefully, (and most likely) none of this will happen to you. By being aware of your surroundings, being cautious and using other tips and tricks in this book, you are narrowing down the chances of this ever happening to you. I can't promise you that it won't, but don't freak out about it.
