Eventually at like 8pm Donnie showed up. He looked horrible. He walked into his office without a word to me. I hurried behind him. I tried to open his door but he locked it. I banged on the door several times, when I remembered that my dad had a spare key to that office in the pot of one of the fake plants. He never told me which one, but I always guessed that it was a lopsided one right next to front desk. I walked over and before I got to the tree, I saw Pete sitting at the desk.
"You know you start tomorrow, right?" I questioned.
"I do... Now." He got up and left.
I shrugged and proceeded to the tree. My speculations were right. I pulled out the key, went back to the door and unlocked it. I walked in and saw Donnie sitting there staring at his computer screen. I walked up to him, trying to make him give me eye contact. I noticed he was hiding the one side of his face to me.
"Don't want to say hi? Or even explain why you didn't show up?" I asked annoyed.
He didn't answer. Just ignored me.
"Well, if you would've been here today, you would've gotten to see your son."
His eyes quickly shot at me without moving his entire face.
"Yeah, that's right, Josh," I was trying to getting at least one word out of him, "you're adopted son."
"I'm not in the mood for your little questions, just get out."
"Excuse me? I could fire you."
Even thought he didn't look at me, I could tell that he was "giving me a look." The look that says fuck off.
"I mean it."
"But you won't fire me. You know why? Cause you need me in your life."
That was the final straw. He's right that I'm not going to fire him, but I don't need him in my life. "I won't fire you because my dad chose you out of a 100 people who applied for this job. My dad actually liked you and saw potential in you. If he were alive right now, he would tell me not to fire you because you are a great asset to this business."
"Therefore, you need me."
Okay, I am a hypocrite, "for this job, yes. For my life, no. I don't. I have plenty of people around me."
"So you don't need to know why I was late."
"Yes I do. Even if it is just a lie. I need to know because we need you here. Stop twisting my words."
"Could you just go? I mean we're closed, why do you need to stay?" He questioned.
"Why do you?"
"So I can work on the financial shit and get caught up on paperwork." He added.
I rolled my eyes and left. It's just not worth arguing with that guy anymore. Whatever. If he wants to be bitter then let him. It's not my fault that his life sucks. I was out the door without a second thought. I walked home and waited for Haynes. He texted me that he was still at work. Man, it sometimes sucks to date a doctor. I'll be honest I miss when he would be around 24/7. I wish he could be a doctor for like 2 days a week. I decided to change into pjs. Which was just black pj pants, a long sleeve grey shirt and slipper socks. I made myself a bowl of cereal and decided to put on whatever looked interesting on Hulu.
I would say about an hour later Haynes walked in. He was smiling, which was odd. He's usually so tired when he gets home he can barely move. Still smiling, he sat next to me on the couch. I just stared at him concerned. It was a little weird, but I'm curious.
"You like wearing expensive clothing, right?" He questioned.
"I mean anything that fits should do." I added.
"You also like fancy free food."
I nodded, "now we're talking."
"Okay, so there's this big party that my boss plans every year, it's for his birthday. Well, I want to show you off an-"
"Wait, you already know I would be on board for this. Why are you explaining this to me?" I interrupted him for a valid reason.
"I don't know. Most the people that I work with can be really rude and snotty."
"And I could be a smart ass."
He let out a deep breath, "I don't want to tell you not be yourself because I that's why I love you. But this job is important and I'm kind of on thin ice with my boss an-"
"You don't have to worry about me. I'll be on my best behavior with still being myself."
He smiled. I kissed him. But something weird happened, when I put my hand on his face, he flinched. My fingers felt kind of dusty, like I just touched make up. I cocked my head and stared at him.
"Are you wearing make up?" I questioned.
"No." He quickly snapped back.
"Why are you wearing make up?" I asked brushing the make up off to recover a black eye, "the fuck you do?"
"Remember when you told me not to do something?"
"Do what?"
"Well, I did it and it didn't end well."
"Do what?" This time I was getting annoyed.
He smiled and nodded, getting ready to tell an amazing story about his black eye.
