CHAPTER SIX

At three-forty-five o'clock Adam got out of his house and went to pick Kara to her house and at four o'clock exactly he was in her house.
He gets out of the car and sends a message to Kara saying come out. Earlier Kara told him not to knock the door that when he got to her house to text her and that she will come down, and two minutes later she opens the door and Adam sees her wearing a black t-shirt with a white quote that says 'Everything passes. Everything changes. Just do what you think you should do' a pair of white pants that were broken at the high of the knees and a pair of black shoes that are similar to converse.
"You are really punctual." Kara says with a smile when she reaches where he is.
"I don't like to make pretty ladies to wait." he says opening the door for her and when she slides to her sit he closes the door and goes to the driver's sit.
He looks at her and notices she isn't wearing make-up. Normally when he goes on a date with a girl, they wear mascara, eye-liner, foundation and lip-gloss. But Kara seems just to be wearing a pair of sunglasses, none make-up on her and he really likes it.
She frowns and asks confuse "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"You are unique. Did you know that?"
She founds it flattering that he finds her unique, but she knows that she is another girl with different qualities and tastes "I will not say unique, I'm a little different. But why do you think that?"
"I don't think that I know that." he gives her a glance and drives.
They were in silence for like a minute or two and Kara wants to ask him about his history, but she doesn't want to seem like she is investigating him.
She thinks about it for a minute and then realizes that he was going to tell her on the first place, so there was nothing wrong with asking him "So... um... you never told me your history."
He frowns confuse not knowing what she was talking about and asks "What?"
"When you were taking me to my house you were going to tell me your history and then my sister interrupts us. Do you remember?" she explains.
He thinks about it and then remembers and starts to get nervous about telling her so he thinks first what he will say "Oh, yeah right... um... well. My history... my history is like let's say it is a unique history. I always lived in cities since I was born. But I was always moving... 'Cause of my dad's job... so you know the history where you don't have many friends and all of that. But when I was around fifteen I moved to a town... it is about an hour on plane from here... anyway, my father got like this stable job and we were able to buy a house and I lived there all these years before I moved here."
"And why did you moved here?" she asks curious thinking it sounded like he had a pretty normal life so she doesn't gets why will he wanted to start over.
'God, she really wants to know my past. But I'm not ready to talk about it, that subject isn't something you drop in on a first date' he thinks and then tells half of the story "'Cause of my father's job."
"So you moved in with your family here?" he shakes his head and says "Um... no exactly."
She frowns not understanding and asks "Huh?"
He will not bring his father now, he wants to have a normal date with her and bringing up his father will ruin that. So he says the one thing that knows that would change the conversation "I mean... um... my momma died last year."
All made sense to Kara now. That's how he understands her feeling so good, because he lost someone that was important to him. Still she felt bad "Oh."
"Yep."
"I don't mean to sound pushy on the subject... but how?"
"Intoxication."
"God that's bad."
"I know." he says and pulls over on the mall's parking-lot "Well here we are." he says, gets out of the car and opens Kara's door.
"Thanks."
"You are welcome."
"So, what movie are we going to see?" she asks curious.
'God... fuck... the movie. Who in earth invites a girl on a date to the movies and doesn't know which ones are on?' He sees an announcement of a France film based on a book and he points the announcement "That one."
"Are you a guy who is into France novel films?" she asks intrigue.
"No, but the trailer of that one seemed interesting." He has never seen a French movie before and has never even heard about that movie.
They start to walks inside the mall and she is surprise and smiles. Kara likes foreign movies. It is weird for some people but for her is like getting to know another culture.
When they reach the line to buy the tickets Adam asks her "You don't like France movies?"
She shakes her head and says "Oh, yes. But let me pay my ticket." she says taking out the money out of her purse
"No way." he pushes her hand with the money right back inside her purse.
"I want to." she insists and pulls out the money.
"But I don't." he says taking the money out of her hand and putting it again in the purse.
She frowns and says "Seriously?"
"Yes, I invite you here and I'll pay your ticket and what you are going to eat."
"You are really stubborn." she says on a jokey tone.
"I get that a lot." she rolls her eyes and says giggling "No kidding."
He buys the tickets and then the popcorns and they sit outside the theater waiting for the movie to start.
"Tell me something about you Kara." he tells her.
She swallows the popcorns and asks "Like?" he shrugs and says "I don't know... um, what you do on your spare time?"
"I learn languages." she says teasing,
He raises his eyes and asks surprise "Really?"
"No." she laughs "I hang out with friends most of the time or I read. And you?"
"I'm almost all the time practicing basketball."
"Since when have you play basketball?"
"Since I was a little boy, do you do any sport? Besides riding your bike like a psycho." he says smiling and she let out a little laugh that made him laugh too.
"No, I'm not into sports. I'm good at it but I don't play them on my spare time."
"Are you good at basketball?" she shrugs and says "I guess so."
"We have to play it someday."
"Yeah, sure." she looks at her watch and sees that the movie is about to start "We should get going."
"Right." he says and they enter to the theater.

...

There is a reason why Adam doesn't see foreign movies because they bored him. It has pass thirty minutes of the movie and he is falling sleep.
He looks at Kara and she seems bored too so he leans to her ear and whispers "Do you want to go somewhere else?"
"Please." she says giggling and they both stand up and go out of the theater.
"I never thought it was going to be so boring, I'm so sorry." he apologizes but she shakes her head and says "God, don't worry. I'm the one that's sorry. You paid two tickets for a boring movie."
He smiles at her and Kara gets goose-bumps when she sees him smile at her like that "But hey, we still have time to do something else." he says.
"You don't have to worry, seriously."
"I've got an idea." he says grabbing her by the arm and pulling her out of the mall.
"Where are we going?" she asks as they walk but he didn't answer he just give her a smile in response.
When they reach the car he says "To the beach." she frowns and asks "The beach?"
"There is a beach twenty minutes from here."
"I don't have a swimming-suit."
"And who said we will swim?" he opens her door, and she slips to the car and he closes the door and enters to the car with a smile on his face "We can just walk."
"We can walk here." she points out.
"But here there is no sand or the sound of ocean." he tells her trying to get her on-board with his idea.
She lets out a little laugh and nods "Let's go to the beach."
As soon as she said those words he drove and then he asks her "Do you want to listen to the radio?"
"I'll say yes, but radio leads to singing and that will ruin our date." she says blushing.
'She said date' the fact she said they were on a date made him happy. He knew they were on a date, but he thought that Kara didn't saw it as a date. 'Does this mean she likes me?' he thinks and then realizes that Kara is talking to him "Are okay?"
"Oh... yeah, sure... you were saying that you are a bad singer?"
She shakes her head and corrects him "Terrible singer."
"You are exaggerating."
"That's because you haven't heard me."
"Then sing one song so I can hear you sing and verify if you are a bad singer or no... just one."
"Okay." she says with a smile and Adam turns the radio on and they hear an announcement saying that the next song is 'Counting Stars by One Republic'. Neither of them knew what song it was until the singers started to sing.
"Do you know it?" he asks her, and she says "The chorus."
"That counts, sing when the chorus starts. Okay?" Kara nods and he smiles and turns the volume of the radio and he sings.

"I see this life like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
And my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and you shall find

Old, but I'm not that old
Young, I'm not that bold
I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told

I feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing"

Kara laughs at the faces Adam put while he sings. She notices he is a good singer and now she is even more nervous about him hearing her sing.

"I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing

I couldn't lie, I couldn't lie, I couldn't lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive."

Adam turns his head to Kara and sees a smile on her face "Your turn." he says looking at Kara and she nods.

"Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard

Said no more counting dollars,
We'll be counting stars."

He glances at her because he notices she is nervous so he sings along with her.

"Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard

Said no more counting dollars,
We'll be, we'll be counting stars

I feel the love and I feel it burn
Down this river, every turn
Hope is a fourth-letter word
Make that money, watch it burn

Old, but I'm not that old
Young, I'm not that bold
I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told

I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing

I couldn't lie, I couldn't lie, I couldn't lie
Everything that downs me makes me wanna fly

Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard

Said no more counting dollars,
We'll be counting stars

Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard

Said no more counting dollars,
We'll be we'll be counting stars."

They both were singing and screaming, moving their heads and feet with the rhythm of the music.

"Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt

Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt

Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt

Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt

Everything that kills me makes me feel alive

Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard

Said no more counting dollars,
We'll be counting stars

Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard

Said no more counting dollars,
We'll be, we'll be counting stars

Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt

Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt

Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt

Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons are learnt."

They both laugh at the end "You're not that bad of a singer." he says.
"I think you need to go to the doctor so they can check those ears of yours." she says teasing him and he laughs and she gives him a small smile
"So you sing, play basketball and choose boring movies, what else can you do?" she asks to him curious, and he thinks about it for a minute and answers "Mm... I can cook."
"You can cook?" she asks raising her eyebrows.
"Yes. My momma tough me when I was little."
"What is the best thing you cook?"
 "Lasagna." he says.
"I must try that lasagna of yours."
"Any other day I will cook you."
"Sounds like we are having a second date." she says with a nervous tone.
"Sure." Adam says letting her know that there will be a second date.
"And what can you do Kara?" he asks her, and she says "Oh, me... I'm fast at reading. Does that counts?"
"I guess so. What do you read?" she shrugs and says "Everything, from the classics to recent."
"And do you have a favorite?"
"No. They all are. I mean... every book is like a person, different. You cannot find two persons that are exactly the same. They may look alike or have similar tastes but there is no person who is the same as the other. The same as book, the theme may look alike or the covers, but at the end they are different stories. Do you read?"
"Not a lot. I prefer movies. Do you like movies?"
"Who doesn't?" she asks in a sarcastic tone.
"Right... Where are you going after graduating?" she sighs and says "Well I'm going to college. I don't know what collage, yet. You?"
"Well, there is this family tradition in my momma's family has that is that they all go to the PhilaU, Philadelphia University." he says glancing.
"And do you want to go?"
"Being honest, no. I don't even like the concept of college."
"So what are you planning to do?" she asks him and he shrugs and says "For now I don't know."
She rolls her eyes and says "I wish I could have that choice, my parents are strict when it comes with college. My brother is in his last year and my sister... well she went to college and then quit, but my parents don't know that yet. They will freak out if they find out."
"And we are here." he says and parks the car.
He gets out of the car and opens her door "I've never been to this beach." she says coming out.
"That's because it's kind of unknown beach." he explains to her.
"So we are alone?" she asks in a nervous tone. She has have butterflies in her stomach the way thru the beach and just thinking they will be alone all day, makes her even more nervous.
"Probably." he answers grinning.
"Okay, then lets walk." she says taking off her shoes, and he does the same.
They walk in the sand near the shore of the ocean that is transparent-blue. They don't talk for a while they walk and smile at each other.
"When was your first kiss?" he asks her.
"In six-grade and you?"
 "Same...first party you were drunk?"
"Last year, there is this party we throw every year on the last day of vacation. I cannot remember everything, but I know I didn't go to the first day of class." he laughs and says "So you used to drink."
"It was that one time, I don't like to drink."
He frowns and asks worry "Is it because of something that happened that night?"
She shakes her head and explains to him "Oh, no... um, my sister Jenna is an alcoholic and I was there when she came drunk every night and I know how alcohol makes people behave and it has been hard to her to stop drinking and even though I don't like it, it's in my genes and I'm scared that if I drink I will like it and then I will not be able to stop. So I've decided not to drink."
"Well, that sucks." she laughs and says "Yes, it does... but anyway, let's talk about something else."
"What do you want to talk about?" he asks her, and she turns around facing the ocean and he stood behind her, not knowing what to say or do.
"Did you know that...." she says and spins around, but somehow she falls down and Adam tries to grab her hand but he ends up falling on top of her.
They were laughing at what happen and then they realize that their noses are almost touching and at once Adam stands up and offers his hand to Kara and she takes it and stands up too.
"Let's sit over there." Kara says pointing at a big rock and they walk toward the rock and they sit down looking at the beach.
"Thanks." she says and Adam looks at her confuse not knowing why she is thanking him for so she explains to him "Thanks for today. I haven't had so much fun since... well."
"You're welcome. I am having fun too and besides I like to see your smile." she blushes and looks at the sky and sees the sun is going down "What hour is it?" he looks down at his phone and says "Almost eight."
She gapes and says surprise "Time went flying."
"That's what happens when you've fun." he says glancing at her and she gives him a smile that made his smile even bigger and they were getting closer each second and when they were about to kiss Adam's phone rings and he looks down and see it's his father calling "I'm sorry I've to take this." Kara nods and he stands-up and answers the call.
Kara looks at the sand for a few seconds and realizes that she was about to kiss him, now her stomach is like about to explode.
Kara hasn't been this nervous ever, not even with Austin. Kara is shaking, she looks up to see Adam and he seems piss off with however he's talking with.
After a few minutes he hangs up and sits beside Kara, he notices she's shaking and says worry "You're shaking... are you okay?"
"I'm just a bit cold." she lies.
"I'll be right back." he says and goes to the car.
He returns with a blanket and says "Here you go."
"Thanks." she glances at him but she notices he seems worry "Is something wrong?"
"No." he says icily and before she can ask something more his phone rings again but he ignores it this time.
Kara frowns and asks "Aren't you going to answer it?"
"No." he puts his phone in silence and then says "Is getting kinda cold, do you want to go?" She nods and says "Sure."
Once they were in the car Adam drives saying nothing and Kara notice she is mad at something and she knows that it is with however call him so she asks him "Who was it?"
"Huh?" he asks confuse since he wasn't listening to her.
"Who called you?" he sighs and says "Um... my father."
"Is he okay?" she asks worry and he shrugs and says icily "He's like always."
She frowns and asks "And that's good or bad?" he opens his mouth to respond but closes it and shakes his head without responding "Okay then." Kara says mad, maybe he is new, and she doesn't know him, but she wants to and she is trying to but there is something he isn't telling her. Just she doesn't know what, it's just a feeling. When he told her about his history and his mom she knows he omits something, something he doesn't want her know. 'But, why? Why could be so bad I cannot know about?' she wonders.
