CHAPTER NINE
Kara drove for ten minutes and she parks outside the abandoned house. The house is full with graffiti everywhere; it has none front door and the two windows are broken.
This house is the perfect house for a zombie movie and since it is getting late Adam doesn't like the idea of entering this house.
"Is it safe?" Adam asks nervous grabbing the box out of the trunk.
She nods and says "Yep... this house has been forever here and its creepy yes, but nothing will happen I promise." he nods and follows her into the house.
"Not a fan of creepy houses huh?" she asks.
"Not much, I don't even like scary movies." he admits.
"Oh. I. Love. Scary. Movies" he rolls his eyes and she laughs.
They walk thru what it seems to be like the living room. It a chimney that looks like it hasn't been use in a long time. It has two furniture and they are both covered with a white blanket that now it looks gray because of the dust and dirt it has in it "Careful with that." she says pointing at a hole on the floor. He takes a big step passing the hole and continues walking "You don't seem like a girl who likes scary movies." he points out.
"What do I seem like?" she asks grinning and turns to her left into a room and then she shakes her head "Not here." and continues walking.
"The kinda girl that likes Nicholas Sparks' movies." she lets a little laugh "Um, no... I mean I don't dislike them. It's not just the type of movie I prefer to see. I prefer to be scare than to cry over a movie."
They enter to a room that seems to be an old office. It has a broken window, lots of shelves with old books and a big table at the back.
"I will have never guess that." he puts the box on the table and she opens it and gives Adam a plate.
"You never know someone entirely... now throw it against the wall." he glances at her and takes the plate from her hand and he throws it.
He felt good.
"Want another one?" she asks, and he nods and grabs a plate from the box. This time he throws it harder and when it crash the sound was louder "YES!!" he says with big smile "Now it is your turn." he gives space to Kara and she grabs a plate and throws it.
She felt good too.
They went on throwing plates and screaming for forty long minutes and when the box was completely empty and they sit down in the table.
"That felt nice." she says putting her head on his shoulder.
"Yeah, I didn't remembered it felt so good." he says with a glance remembering the first time he did it with his momma "Thanks." he says at Kara looking down at her and she looks up "Not a problem." they stay like that looking at each other and Adam gets closer, but Kara stands up and says "Um... I think... I think we should get going."
"Yeah, right." he says disappointed, but stills gets up and they go to the car.
...
They talked little on the entire ride, just small talk. She parks in front of Adam's house.
"Thanks for lunch." she says.
"Thank you for... everything. I had a good time." he admits and she glances at him and says "Me too."
"See you again?" he asks not knowing if she will want to see him again.
"Yeah, bye." he gets out of the car and Kara drives away.
She thinks how awesome Adam is 'I don't care he has this whole situation with his family or his drinking problem, I like him... and he tried to kiss me so he probably likes me too. I didn't kiss him back because I was like freaking-out at that point and I didn't even think of what I was doing... although I regret not kissing him, but he kinda got me by surprise there... and I still don't know if I'm ready to be with anyone. Everything is so confusing right now. I like Adam, but I'm still not clear if I still love Austin.'
She parks her car and enters to her house.
"Look who is back." Mike says "Where were you?" she gets closer to her brother and sees her mother right behind him. She wonders why is she here early, her mother is rarely home early.
"With a friend." she says.
"Lucas?" her mother asks while she makes dinner.
"No... um his name is Adam, he's new in town." both her mother and brother are surprise.
"Did it was the same one you were with yesterday?" Mike asks, and she knows where this questions leads. And in a normal situation she would just had walked over her room, but she needs her mother to know that she has moved on so she nods.
"Do you like him?" her mother asks without looking at Kara.
"Yes." she says and then her phone rings and she checks it and it is Adam "Excuse me." she says and goes to her room and answers it, closing her door.
"Hey." she says.
"Hi... so, um... I was thinking. If maybe you will want to go with me to the park tomorrow." a big smile cross in Kara's face and then she says "Yeah, sounds good."
"Great." he says sounding relief.
"So... um... are you feeling less stress?"
"Seriously, yes. I let a lot of anger throwing those plates."
"See, I told you."
"Thanks... I haven't had that much fun in a while and I needed it."
"Me too." she says smiling and lies down in her bed.
"It felt nice telling you the truth." he admits, and she knows the feeling.
"I know how you feel... you were the first person I told about Austin's death."
"How's that possible?" he asks thinking that everyone here seemed to know that he died and that he was Kara's boyfriend.
"Well... I told people he had cancer, but when he died I didn't had to tell anyone. Mountain West is small and that gossip ran fast. So by the end of the day everyone knew, and I didn't have to tell anyone because everyone knew he died of cancer and that I was his girlfriend. So you were the first person I told, and it felt good like... I cannot even explain it...." he interrupts her and says "Like you admitted the truth."
"Exactly."
"That's how I felt... I appreciate everything."
"Well, you're welcome."
"Then I'll see you tomorrow at twelve o'clock."
"See you then." she hangs-up and puts the phone over her chest and lets out a big smile. She cannot wait to see him tomorrow.
'Maybe this time we kiss or maybe-' her thoughts get interrupted by a knock on the door "Come on in." she says and Mikes enters.
"So... was that him?" he asks, and she nods "Are you boyfriends?"
"Um... no."
"Okay... but you like him? Or did you say that because of mom?"
"I like him... or I think I do. It's kinda complicated."
"Well... what if you invite him to the party mom's throwing on Wednesday."
Now everything made sense to Kara "That's why she is home early!!" She says thinking out loud.
Every year on the same day her mother throws a party to celebrate the anniversary of their company. It's practically a bunch of rich people talking about how awesome being rich is... it's a party that Kara hates attending to, but she has to. And inviting Adam might made the party a bit better, 'so why not?' she thinks "Yeah, I'll tell him tomorrow."
Mike frowns and asks "Are you seeing him tomorrow too?"
"Yes, I will meet him at the park."
"Okay." he says and goes out of her room.
She thinks about the party of her mother 'Maybe he doesn't want to come. Like his world is so different from mine and maybe he doesn't likes being with a bunch of ridiculous rich people. Or maybe he says yes for me. It'll make the party less horrible if he is here with me...' Austin always came because his mother was invited. He didn't had to come, but he came because he knew Kara hated that party and he didn't wanted her to went to the party alone, remembering that makes Kara's heart ache for the memory of him.
"Will I ever stop loving you?" she says out loud grabbing the photo of Austin and pressing it against her chest. Her eyes cover with tears and she puts her knees against her chest and grabs a pillow and presses her face in it.
"Would I ever be capable of thinking about you and not cry?" she says out loud looking thru her window, and the tears came faster this time and wasn't able to stop them.
She cries in her room alone like always. This has been her life for the past few months 'When is it I will stop crying from the memory?
Will it always be like this?
Why can't I get pass this?
Why do I have to cry always for the same reason?
Why do I have to hide my emotions from everyone?
Why do I have to pretend that I am okay when I am not?' Her thoughts get interrupted by the sound of her phone. She grabs it and sees that Adam is calling again. She sobs and wipes her tears of her face and takes a few deep breaths before answering.
"Yeah?" she says, trying that her voice sound as normal as possible.
"Hey. Did I wake you?"
"No. What's up?"
"My father just called... um, nothing to worry though. But I must put our date later if that Okay with you?" his voice sounds nervous, and that made Kara nervous.
"Yeah, sure... but is it everything okay?"
"Yes... um, he... um, he found an album my momma made for me when I was little and he wanted me to pick it up."
She relaxes now that she knows it isn't anything serious, but still she doesn't like him being near his father.
"Okay." she says and looks again to the photo of Austin. The tears were threatening to come out, she shakes her head trying to not led the tears to come out, but before she knows it she is crying again and this time Adam notices that something is wrong.
"Are you okay?" he asks, and she wipes her tears again.
She stays in silence not knowing if she should tell him, but then she says sniffing "I was... um... does it ever stop hurting?" he isn't clear of what she's talking about so he waits for her to keep talking "I mean... does it ever comes a moment when I don't cry when I think of him?" now he knew what she was talking about.
"Oh, gorgeous... there is. With time you'll know how to deal with it and you'll be able to smile when you think of him, I promise."
She cries even harder, she cannot contain the tears anymore "But it hurts so much right now."
"Oh Kara, don't cry please." she tries to stop the tears but she cannot stop them and she cannot answer him, she cries.
"I'm coming over." he says and before she could tell him not too he hung-up the phone.
Her heart aches again and the tears came faster and every second that passes it hurt even more. She grabs the photo again and sees it for a while, sometimes it felt like he would come and kiss her again. But she knew that wasn't happening she has to accept that. 'I can't live like this. With this... emptiness inside me, it hurts so much sometimes I want to burry myself underground.
I want to stop thinking.
I want to stop feeling.
I want to stop remembering.
I want to stop being hurt all the time by something I can't change. I wish I could forget what pain feels like for a minute and remember how does it feels to be happy with nothing to be worry about.
I was one of those who always complain about everything... if I could go back to the past I will slap myself and tell myself to enjoy what you have because life has ways to take you what you love the most and rip you heart out in question of seconds. It's not fair I have to feel like this. Anything right now isn't fair. I should be able to date someone as wonderful as Adam and be willing to kiss him, but when I'm with him I feel guilty. Like I'm cheating on Austin, but I cannot be cheating on Austin because he is freaking dead'
She hears Mike talking to someone at the door and she knows that it is Adam. She wonders how he got so fast. It has pass five minutes since he hung up and their houses are fifteen minutes away from each other.
A few seconds later she hears a knock and this time Jenna enters "Kara, sis... what's wrong?" she asks and sits beside her and right behind her it is Adam and her eyes meet. She doesn't find the words, she still cannot talk. Kara looks down to the photo and Jenna follows her eyes "Oh sis." Jenna says and hugs her, but Kara's eyes aren't focused on Jenna she is looking at Adam. Somehow he makes her feel better. Looking at his amazing green eyes makes her realize that she has someone that knows how she is feeling right now.
"I'll leave you two alone." Jenna says when she realizes ways the two of them were looking at each other.
After Jenna leaves the room, Adam sits besides Kara and she puts her face on his shoulder and he whispers on her ear "You can scream, cry, punch me, or talk. But just don't hide your emotions."
"I want to talk." she says looking at his incredible green eyes that made her feel secure.
"Then talk gorgeous." he says, putting himself behind her and he puts his hand around her waist and she lays down putting her head on his chest.
"How long did it take for you?"
"I'm not over it... I've being hiding my emotions behind alcohol for a long time."
"And did it help you to stop the aching?"
He raises his eyes and he shakes his head and then in a low voice says "Don't even think about it Kara... it's not worth it. I will not let you waste your life."
"I want it to stop. I need it to stop." tears come down her face and Adam hugs her harder. He knows she needs it to let it all come out.
He looks down at the photo and says "Talk to me about this photo... you told me you were friends here."
"Yes. I've always been friends with Austin. This photo was taken like a month before we became boyfriends."
"So he was your best friend too?"
"Yes... um, since we were little. Our mothers were friends before we were even born." she lets out smile.
"So, I'm guessing he was your first boyfriend?"
She chuckles "Um... no. I had feelings for him when I was fifteen and we became boyfriends when I was sixteen."
"Ha." he says amuse.
She frowns and asks him "What?"
"I cannot imagine how he felt nothing for you earlier. You're hard to miss." he says with a smile and Kara shrinks and blushes. And that made Adam's smile even brighter "Don't tell me you don't know how special you're." he says whispering in her ear and she couldn't say a word. Her heart is beating fast, and she is getting the weird feeling on her stomach, she shakes her head in respond "Well gorgeous let me tell you, you're special, don't you ever forget that okay?" she looks up at him and he gives her a smile that made her blush even more. She couldn't say anything so she nods and he kisses her on her forehead.
She cannot believe that he came because she was crying. It made her happy just to think that. She realizes that she forgot about Austin for a minute, she wasn't crying anymore, her heart didn't hurt... she was maybe happy. Looking at him in the eyes she says "Um... thanks... for coming and making me feel better."
"Whenever you want." he grabs her hand and caresses it and it made Kara tickles.
Being in his arm makes Kara feel secure; and she hasn't felt like this for a while so she doesn't want him to leave. At least not for now "Can you... um. Stay for a few more minutes."
"Of course."
