Where I talk about maps
So I recently found my old maps of Majiki and Roahla, and I thought I would share them.
Here's the old Roahlan map, and if you're familiar with the new version, you can see that it hasn't changed too much.
But then we get to the world map, and woooo boy a lot has changed.
This map basically looks like Earth, not a magical fantasy planet. Basically it's only missing Antarctica and the Gulf of Mexico is on the west side of the western continents rather than the east side.
(Sorry, I can't find a copy that doesn't have Roahla on it already)
Then look at this beautiful, original map:
It is so much more original!
This map was made using hole punch chads from an overflowing 3-hole punch I had in my college dorm room. I just dumped them onto a piece of paper and traced where they fell with only a few adjustments. Then, I got a piece of thin graph paper and made the land squiggly to mimic real land. Finally, I digitized it by tracing over a scan in Procreate.
Though I still love adding finished areas to the map. It's like in a video game where you have to go there to reveal the map! I think it's fun.
Speaking of fun, here's the map that Dawn's Light had for basically the entire book:
I like this one, I thought I was so clever, making the map of the frozen over land almost completely white. It also shows that there's something different about the Ulven lands than the rest of the region. Many Ulven have magic, unlike the humans that populate the rest of the land. I don't want to spoil anything.
I also love the moon compass detail.
It becomes a sun in the final map reveal!
Look at this beautiful map!
This is Roahla before it was cursed, and thought it would take a long time, it does eventually return to a state similar to this.
In The Liveship Paragon's map, you can see that the Ulven lands have even split off of Roahla to form their own country!
(I also just realized I forgot to make a compass for this map, oops. I'm not fixing it and reposting it to 40ish chapters of The Liveship Paragon. It doesn't bug me that much. Or maybe I'm just tired)
And I guess I also should share the map for Star Dragon. (One day, I will finish it!)
New Stellonia is a new country, and it's almost completely deforested.
In The Liveship Paragon, it's revealed that this is not the original homeland for Stellans. It was what is now Hoshio. (You can even see that the main port of Hoshio is Staropolis, and there is a New Staropolis in New Stellonia)
Many Stellans founded a new country here, in the deforested and empty lands.
But it's also a mystery, as why were the lands already prepared for mass agriculture, despite poor soils.
I really love telling small stories with maps.
I guess I'll add this map to the blank world one when I finish Star Dragon. That will be my reward for finishing it!
I guess I can't forget about A Dragon's Ruin, but I never made a map for that one.
So here's a picture of the art I made for the cover!
I really like it and I think it came out well!
I used a lot of references for that castle. Mostly old European castles.
Thank you for coming to my random ramble about maps!
