The thing about secret relationships was, they were hard to maintain unless you had a good cover story.

And if your cover story was 'I hate him' then everyone knew you were secretly dating.

At least that's what the current betting pool was at the Statehouse, there were several states in very heated 'I hate him' relationships and one of them must be in a relationship with the other. Or at least that was Florida's logic. In truth the betting pool became a thing after Mass and New York were seen cuddling together in bed and thus a whirlwind of bets was born. Everything from Texas and California being secret lovers to California and the rest of the west was kept in a secret Google Doc compiled by Rhode with the current statistics on the bets and what amount the pot was up to now. It seemed like every 'I have you' coupling had a betting pool and a new one was born everyday.

Ohio and Michigan, thankfully, flew under the radar.

Neither knew why or how; Ohio was considered the most handsome of the midwest (a fact he flaunted much to Michigan's chergain) so his eligible bachelor status was pretty sound. And why would he date his mortal enemy? The one who stole Toledo from him? He had plenty of other states to choose from. Why pick Michigan?

Because Michigan was the only one who knew the true Ohio outside of the ego and Skyline chili. And he wiped his tears when his state did stupid things and Ohio soothed Michigan when the others insulted him. They were each other's rock.

So they kept their relationship on the downlow and no one ever suspected anything. And to their credit, they were very good at it. The bickering and biting remarks at the table or outside of meetings were scarily convincing. Ohio did nearly go too far when he and Florida tried to kidnap Michigan's mayor (Michigan made Ohio sleep on the couch for a week after) but they came back together and were stronger together for it. They held hands secretly under tables or kicked each other gently when the other seemed upset. When the house was empty they'd snuggle and watch a movie or, when all the states sans Gov of course, was asleep they'd sneak into each other's rooms to snuggle to sleep.

Turns out Florida and Louisiana's prank had some merit after all.

But it still weighed heavily on the pair's minds that they had to hide their relationship, especially with the whole betting pool going on. Michigan glanced up as the door to his bedroom opened and shut and Ohio trudged inside.

"Oh? What's going on?" Michigan asked gently as Ohio fell on the bed.

"They're currently betting me with Illinois." Ohio mumbled into the sheets.

"Oh is that all." Michigan snorted, opening his book. "That's better than last week when you were with Kansas."

"I don't want to be shipped with anyone!" Ohio yelled sitting up. "I want to be left alone!"

"This'll pass." Michigan shrugged. "Once Florida gets a new hyperfixation this will go away and the money will be spent on another drone."

"After what happened to the last one? Not likely." Ohio snorted. He scuttled up in bed and cuddled against Michigan who sighed, put down his book, and cuddled Ohio right back.

"Only one I want to be shipped with is you." Ohio mumbled against his jersey.

"Same here Oh. Same." Michigan smiled. "Imagine the commotion if they found out we were together."

"We should bet on us being together, win the pot." Ohio smirked. The two gently kissed and snuggled together again, letting the arguments outside fade to nothing and enjoying the company of one another. Why make their relationship a big deal when they could have this peace? They wouldn't trade it for anything.

Rhode Island turned away from his cameras and booted up his laptop, opening up the master list of all the possible Statehouse couplings. He put the cursor in the empty space next to 'Texas/Oklahoma' and put 'Michigan/Ohio' in.
