Twenty.
After (Y/n) was transferred to the hospital, the doctors quickly examined and (her/him/them) and told everyone that they would require stitches for her head. Although the surgery was a simple stitch to the head, (Y/n) had lost a lot of blood from the time they was hit to the time they arrived at the hospital, so no one was sure if they was going to live. Right now, (Y/n)'s status was comatose.
It was the dead of the night, hours after Mikado and Anri left. Erika, Walker and Saburo opted to stay but Masaomi dismissed them, saying they should go back to Kyohei and help him. Masaomi sat in a chair with a bandage wrapped around his head, holding (Y/n)'s hand in his as he watched them. They just came back from their surgery. (Y/n) also had bandages wrapped around (her/his/their) head, and a IV tube sticking out one of (her/his/their) arms. (Her/His/Their) chest rose and sunk, as (she/he/they) was in a deep sleep.
Masaomi's eyes began to close as he had a long and rough day and been up for hours. He slowly feel asleep, but a voice woke him. "How about I take over and you nap for a while?"
His head sapped up and he turned to see Saki beside him. She had her delicate hand on Masaomi's shoulder and had a frown as she looking over (Y/n), a concerned look in her eyes. "Saki?!" He sputtered, now waking up. "How long you've been here?"
"A while," she replied. "I heard from Erika, Walker and the others. About everything. You're an idiot. You really are."
"You just noticed?" Masaomi laughed. But his laughter quickly died down as he looked at (Y/n) again. Their natural (s/c) skin was pale, as (she/he/they) didn't have much blood circulating through them and a light sheen of sweat on (her/his/their) face as (she/he/they) went through getting (her/his/their) head split open and surgery all at once.
"How is (L/n)?" Saki asked, concerned.
"That doctors said (she/he/they) was lucky," Masaomi replied. "(Y/n) took a really hard blow to the head with a metal pole in my place. An hit like that would've cracked someone's head open but they suffered a concussion instead. But, (she/he/they) bled out a lot and now...they're in comatose they aren't so sure if (Y/n)'s gonna make it out."
Masaomi gritted his teeth as tears fell from his thick eyelashes and fell onto (Y/n)'s face. "I was such a jerk to (her/him/them) for a while..." he sobbed. "All because they gave me advice what to do with you, Saki. I couldn't face the facts so I ignored them, thinking (she/he/they) might keep nagging me until I do it. I was so mean to them, but despite that, (Y/n) gave (her/his/their) life for mine. If they die...oh god...I'll never forgive myself!"
Masaomi sobbed as more tears fell, staining the white sheets of her bed. Saki frowned, "Masaomi, aren't you repeating what you did for me?"
Masaomi stopped crying, tears flowing, realizing Saki was right. "When I got sent to the hospital, you felt so guilty about it that I'd hold a grudge on what happened to me," she noted. "So you avoided me entirely and didn't visit me. Are you going to do the same for (L/n) when (she/he/they) gets up?"
Masaomi stayed silent, not wanting to respond. Saki gave a small smile. "How about instead of repeating the same mistake as me, you talk to (her/him/they) when (she/he/they) gets up. Who knows? Don't assume the worst; you'd never know it's going to happen until you do it."
Saki frowned once again. "Look...I need to apologize for something," she sighed. "I let them catch me on purpose. Izaya said if I did that, then it would all end. I...I went by myself that night. And then he spread the information that-"
"I knew," Masaomi interrupted, finally talking again. "Izaya also told you to pretend that you couldn't walk so I would feel guilty and visit you, right? He wanted me to be his pawn."
"Masaomi..." Saki said, stunned that he knew the truth.
"I'm an esper, remember?" He grinned.
"Finally...I did something against what Izaya for the first time."
"I think I finally can say it. Look, I'm sorry that I couldn't save you that night. But, I really do lo--"
"Don't say it, Masaomi."
"Huh? Don't say what?"
"You know it. Don't say that you love me. Even though you knew that I pretended to not be able to walk so you'd feel guilty, I know that you still feel guilty on that night. I want you to say it because should mean it, not because you regret something from the past."
"Saki--"
"(L/n)'s a wonderful person, did you ever notice? When (she/he/they) came and visited me, I told (her/him/them) all about us and our history together. An ordinary person would of snapped at me and told me to back off and like you said-we're history. But, you know what (she/he/they) said instead? (She/He/They) gave us a week."
"A week? For what?"
"A week from the time I get discharged from the hospital to sort out our relationship. (L/n) put my feelings before (hers/his/theirs) all because we knew each other longer. (L/n) said (she/he/they) wouldn't make the move on you until our week was up and (she/he/they) observed how our relationship is going. Masaomi, did you ever noticed that (she/he/they) has feelings for you?"
"What? No way~ (Y/n) knows that I'm teasing."
"If (L/n) knew that you were teasing, then why did (she/he/they) stay with you for so long? Why did (she/he/they) attempt to help you with our relationship? Why did they give (her/his/their) life for yours?"
The both went silent. Masaomi still held the sleeping (Y/n)'s hand and Saki had her hand on Masaomi's shoulder. She spoke again, "You know, I was planning in leaving Ikebukuro for a while. You know, so I can take a break and came back as a new me. Do you what to come?"
"Saki..." Masaomi mumbled. "I'm not so sure...I'd be ditching my friends..."
"That's not it," Saki laughed. "Don't lie-you also like (L/n), do you?"
"What? No--"
"I see the way you look at (L/n). You treat (her/him/they) like (she's/he's/they're) the last exotic animal out there. And the way you talked about (her/him/them) when you finally came to visit me. It was like (she/he/they) were an amazing person. And they are. I get it. If you're not coming, then I want our relationship to end."
"No, Saki, I didn't mean--"
"I don't this ambiguous end for our relationship to keep on going and pull (L/n) into it as well. Masaomi, tell me honestly right now-do you want to leave Ikebukuro with me or not? You can let (L/n) know your answer when (she/he/they) gets up so she won't be confused if you do end up leaving or I leave."
"Saki..." Masaomi put some thought into his answer for a while before opening his mouth. "Saki-I made up my mind. I want to..."
The passing of a truck from the road below the hospital honked, muting out Masaomi's words as it lit up the room for a moment from its bright headlights. But Saki heard everything. She smiled and have Masaomi a hug. "I'm glad you made your decision Masaomi. And...I support it." She whispered to him.
