Eight.
"Here, Anri," You handed Anri your math textbook. "You can borrow mine for tonight's homework."
"But what about your homework?" She fretted.
"Finished in class."
"Oh...thanks anyways."
"No problem." The reason why Anri had to take your math textbook for the night was because somebody was taking her stuff and throwing it around the school. You nor your friend group haven't figured out who's been behind all the scavenger hunts.
"Whelp, I have to go to work. I'll see you tomorrow Anri!" You waved her goodbye and ran off to the cosplay cafe.
You felt bad for leaving her, Mikado, and Masaomi to search on their own without your help, especially after everything they've done for you. Plus, you been hanging around them less lately because of work.
You entered the cafe and headed straight to the employee's room to dress out. As you slipped on your uniform, Mirai came into the dressing room suddenly. "(Y/n), do you remember if we got our paycheck?" She asked. "Because our boss can't remember."
"Yeah. We got paid on Sunday."
"Could you show your paycheck so we can be sure?"
"Sure thing. I think I slipped it into my math textbook and haven't had time to organize it then..."
You trailed off as you dug through your messenger bag in sudden realization. "...which is with my friend right now," you finished.
"That sucks. Wanna call them up and bring your textbook so you can retrieve your paycheck before it goes into their pockets?"
"Mirai! My friends would never do that!"
"Kidding...kinda."
You sighed at shook your head at Mirai's playful attitude. From her immaturity, you think she and Kaito are high schoolers, but nope! They're both in college. The only other high schooler here is Patricia, but she doesn't go to Raira. You took out your phone and scrolled through the contacts before finding Anri's name in it. You pressed the call button and waited for her to pick up. A dial tone played on your phone, signalling that her phone was ringing. A distinctive click! noise was heard. "Hello?" Asked Anri through your phone.
"Hi, Anri," you greeted her.
"Oh, it's you (Y/n). What's wrong?"
"Um...you still have my math textbook, right?"
"...yeah? You need it?"
"This is going to sound utterly stupid but I left something important in the pages and I need you to bring it here to my workplace so I can retrieve it."
"Can it wait until tomorrow? I can find it for you and hand it to you in school."
"No, Anri. It's REALLY important."
"Alright. I'm coming over. What's the address of your work place?"
"707 Mystic Avenue."
"Okay. I'm on my way. See you in a bit."
"Thanks, Anri."
You hung up and sighed before marching out the dressing room and to the entrance and stood behind the counter so you could take their order. You blushed at the fact Anri was coming over. Oh, this was utterly embarrassing! Anri gonna come and she's going to see you here and learn about your obsession with anime. Oh well. At least it's just her, and she's an understanding person.
The bell chimed, perking your ears. You inhaled, closed your eyes and smiled. "Hello there!" You greeted. "What would be your order today?"
When you opened your eyes, the color drained from your body at who it was. Anri, still holding the door knob and holding your textbook in the other, had a perplexed look on her face. Mikado also stood beside her, a look of fascination on his eyes as he looked around the cafe. The worst part? Masaomi was also there, snickering.
You wanted to have a meltdown right then drop your friends discovering where you worked, but you kept it cool. "(Y/n)?" Masaomi said. "This is where you work?"
You furiously blushed red, and luckily Kaito noticed your uneasiness. "Hey," he said, approaching you. "Are they being a bother?"
"No," you shook your head as you looked at Anri. "I thought you were coming alone!" You whined.
"I mean, we were already together and I didn't want to leave on my own," Anri stated.
Mikado looking at the menu above you and at the cakes on display. "I actually want to get something here," he said.
"Y-Yeah..." you stuttered. "What can I get for you?"
"Those Pokémon cakes were really cute, I really want the Bulbasaur cake," Mikado ordered.
"Why don't we all get all of the Pokémon cakes?" Masaomi asked. "I want to try them all!"
"Um, they're all the same flavor..." you sweatdropped.
"But I want them all!" Masaomi whined.
"Okay!" You sighed. "Would you like a drink as well?"
After taking their drinks order, you punched into the cash register and totaled their amount due. "That would be 3000 Yen please," you said.
Masaomi paid the total amount himself and you counted the amount needed and handed him the change. "Keep it," he winked at you. "I'm tipping you lots because you look adorable in the uniform!"
You're face was consumed in red as you fled into the kitchen as Masaomi laughed at you. As you prepared their drinks, Patricia came in and noticed how miserable you looked. "Tough bunch of customers?" She asked.
"Worse," you sighed. "They're my friends."
"What's wrong with that?" She said.
"It's just..." you fidgeted with your uniform. "I'm so embarrassed they found out I work here?"
"Why? You don't enjoy working here?"
"No! I love it, actually. I never intended for my friends to find out where I worked."
"Well, if they were truly your friends, they wouldn't judge where you worked or what you do for a living and still like you for who you are, not for your job."
"You're..." you took a deep breath. "You're right, Patricia. Thanks."
"No problem," she smiled as the bell chimed again. "I got this," she said. "Go serve your friends."
You nodded as you placed their drinks on a tray and went out to grab each of the Pokémon cakes. They were all small vanilla cakes with white frosting, but on top they had a different Pokémon on top. One had Charamander, another had Squirtle, and there's the Bulbasaur cake Mikado liked so much from earlier.
You carried the tray out and found your friends sitting around a table, conversing and laughing. Keeping Patricia's words in mind as you approached them, you balanced the tray in one hand as you served them their drinks. "Here's your order!" You chirped as you placed the cakes in the center.
"Oh wow!" Mikado admired.
"You're right-they are super cute!" Anri smiled.
"Thanks, (Y/n)!" Mikado said to you.
"No problem!" You replied. "Just let me know if you need anything!"
"Wait, (Y/n)!" Masaomi called you back. "So, this is where you work?" He asked, taking in the cafe as a whole.
"I guess that explains why you aren't hanging around us as often as you used to," Anri observed.
"Yeah," you laughed nervously. "Sorry, you guys must think I'm a total weeb."
"Not at all!" Mikado assured you. "I think it's kinda admirable that you manage to juggle a job and still be on top of your class at the same time. Besides, I think this place this really cool!"
"Wow, you think so?" You asked, relieved that your friends weren't being judgmental of you. "Thanks, Mikado!"
"Oh, here's your textbook," Anri handed your math textbook and you flipped through it, taking the paycheck and pocketing it to show to Mirai later.
"Thanks for making the time to come here, Anri," you thanked get.
"Plus, you better get used to seeing me often," Masaomi added. "'Cause I'll be a regular here and I only want you to serve me in that adorable uniform!"
Oh, you never ran back to the kitchen red-faced as fast as you did that day.
