46) Tony throws a party
As it turned out, quite a few people had accepted Tony's invitation. After all, who was going to turn down an invitation from Tony Stark? A few journalists had rushed off straight after the press conference to submit articles before their deadlines but the large majority of journalists attended, keen to get a snapshot of the Avengers' lives at Stark Tower. In the end, almost all three hundred guests from the conference attended the subsequent party at Avengers Tower.
Construction had finished on the tower but what Tony had forgotten was that only one room looked vaguely ready to accommodate human life. It was a large room and the designated communal space for the Avengers. That and whichever strangers came to live at the tower upon a whim on Tony's part. There were only a few chairs scattered around and one sofa.
"Magic us up a bar will you?" Tony slurred at Loki.
"Sure thing," Loki muttered.
With one click, a makeshift bar stood against the far wall. A few cameramen instantly started taking photos. Loki would probably end up with a newspaper article about him the next morning. With another click he gave the room a lick of paint and furnished it with a few more comfy sofas, disco lights, a full stereo system and even a few paintings.
"I guess I'm the bartender then," he commented idly, ignoring the shocked gazes.
"Right you are," Clint said, first to snatch up a bottle of beer.
Natasha was close behind with a glass of wine.
"Enjoy your night," she commented with a small smile.
He rolled his eyes in response.
After the hordes bore down on the drinks like a mob of vultures, Steve approached Loki.
"How is it going?" He asked, leaning uncomfortably on the bar.
"This isn't anywhere near atypical for a party, and certainly not atypical for a Stark party," Loki drawled in response.
Steve looked him up and down.
"I assume you're used to this sort of thing, given that you're... You know..."
"An Asgardian very used to partying and drinking?" Loki asked, amused.
"Well, I was going to say royalty, a prince."
"I did have to frequent social events," Loki said casually. "An absent prince is a royal scandal waiting to happen, no matter the reason for the absence."
"That seems unfair. What if you don't want to attend?"
Loki shrugged.
"You had to do publicity stunts too," he pointed out. "And, to make it easier for me, I had to do it my entire life rather than having to adapt to the lifestyle halfway through."
"But you don't seem like the type to party all the time," Steve insisted. "You're all prim and proper."
Loki smiled, taking it as a compliment coming from Steve. He wouldn't be happy to hear it from anybody else though.
"Just because I don't often drink, doesn't mean I can't," Loki explained. "Drinking does affect my seidr in an averse way, something Thor has never quite realised," he added in a slightly bitter tone.
The man was now looking annoyingly sympathetic.
"Avoiding alcohol does not mean that social occasions are out of the question. I do, as the god of lies and trickery, enjoy a party or two. Especially if I was commissioned to cause a scene or actually practise sanctioned magic."
Steve hadn't lost his sympathetic air.
"Let me know if you want me to take over running the bar," Steve offered with a kindly smile.
"Thanks," he replied, knowing he wouldn't take Steve up on the offer.
As if Steve had any idea how to make any of the drinks. Loki had spent the large majority of his time on earth making cocktails for Tony and business associates.
Steve moved away and was promptly hailed by a couple of journalists. The man was his own worst enemy, choosing to subject to their interrogation rather than politely turn down their offer of an interview during one of the most hectic parties of Tony's entire reign. Many slack-jawed journalists watched as Tony seduced almost all of the listening women and a few men with his cheesy pick-up lines. Loki decided it was time to intervene.
"Tony, Tony, we've talked about this," Loki tutted, gliding towards the crowd.
"Well you were nowhere near, my love!" Tony cried.
Loki blinked in surprise. This was obviously the point in Tony's drunk spectrum where he became dangerously flirtatious. At this point, no-one was safe.
"I couldn't because you were hounded, my dear," Loki replied, deciding to go along with the chick-flick drama they'd created.
"Can't you see that I just want time alone with Loki?" Tony asked the journalists childishly, pulling at Loki's hand.
A few more seasoned journalists just shook their heads, smiling, having seen this Stark behaviour before. Some of the younger ones were flabbergasted and those desperate for a story of any kind were hurriedly typing on their phones or just holding up camcorders. Tony was meant to be dating Pepper Potts, for goodness' sake.
"Tony, dearest, don't cause a scene," Loki smiled.
"Aww, I love you so much!" Tony trilled. "Give us a kiss."
Grinning, Loki gently unwound Tony's hand from his and flashed the journalists with his most winning smile.
"My friends, if I may call you friends, I think I can safely say it is far past Tony's bedtime and too late for those of us with actual jobs."
Loki knew Tony wouldn't remember the comment in the morning.
"As such, thank you all for a splendid party and goodnight!"
Slightly astonished, the journalists dispersed, casting shocked looks back at him and Tony. Rhodey came up to them.
"Don't worry, Lokes, I've got Tony from here."
Loki passed the near comatose billionaire onto his friend.
"Loki, may I speak with you?"
It was Thor, looking uncharacteristically nervous. Confused, Loki agreed. He wondered, idly, whether Loki had heard Tony say 'give us a kiss'. Thor understood joshing as well as any mortal but that particular phrase was one of Loki's specialties.
"Of course. Shall we go somewhere private?"
"Thank you, brother. We have much to discuss."
