18. The Engagement

"They thirsted for love,
But found only a mirage,
Some hearts are like a desert,
You die wandering in."

"Today's your big day, Lucy!" Kristine said, looking at her and setting her hair. Lucy saw her reflection in the mirror. The Indian ghagra  did wonders on her. Her face wore a smile, but not an inch of make-up. She had refused it again. She smiled seeing herself look so different. It had been years since she had worn Indian.

"I guess it is," she replied with a lighted smile shinning upon her face. Kristine finished the final touches on her hair, smiling at her with a sort of sisterly affection.

"Something is going to be different today," she said to Lucy. Lucy raised her eyebrows.

"What?"

"Blake"

"How?"

"You'll see. Now let's go," she said, holding Lucy and bringing her out of the door.

The hall was filled with people chatting among themselves. On seeing her, they turned and gasped at her beauty. Lucy looked like rain on barren lands, like rainbows on skies which had only seen darkness. She was a surprise in the wells of monotony and nobody could help appreciate the vibes of purity which radiated from inside her like. Her eyes searched for Blake in the crowd. He was talking to the guests.

Lucy stepped on the last stair when she saw Blake. She couldn't believe her eyes. He had worn an Indian sherwani, a dark blue one, which complimented his blonde hair and fair skin very well. He looked at her. His eyes seemed to have reached the closest they could get to heaven upon seeing the person he had loved, so dearly, for all his life and more, looking straight at him, waiting to spend the rest of her life with him. He. walked and extended his hand towards her. She accepted.

"You look beautiful," he whispered.

"And you, like magic," she smiled, gazing at him as if he were the stars.

They sat down on the sofa , and Mrs. Halter opened a small violet box. She handed the diamond ring to Blake. He took it. Lucy extended as Blake lovingly slid the ring into her finger. Then, she slid the ring into his.

The crowd applauded. Lucy and Blake looked at each other and smiled. Their dreams were coming true and there was to be, waiting like an envelope to be opened, a life full of laughter, maybe a few fights and downfalls, but full of love and compassion.

Eros and Kristine went up on the stage .

"We have something to say," they said together. The gathering turned to them and an earsplitting silence spread across the hall. Eros took the mic first.

"Congratulations to both of you," he began, "We've grown up so fast. Time flew by just like that. Us enjoying, playing, laughing, joking and now, marrying. I remember each and every moment we spent together, laughing and crying, falling and lifting, dancing and watching moving waters with stillness. I remember Kristine teasing Lucy all the time since childhood," he looked at Kristine and Lucy who smiled. " I remember Blake and myself discussing about you girls," Blake nodded. " I remember all those moments when we cried on each other's shoulders and laughed until our stomachs ached. And now, I'll always remember this smile on both your faces," Lucy and Blake looked at each other, their heart melting slowly like ice in a hot bowl. "You've grown up to be such fine humans, both of you. So supportive, so strong, so caring. I don't know how to thank you. You've been our parents when we needed it, our friend, our family. So thank you," he said, "For being the kind of friends we could only dream of having and the siblings we could share, not our blood, but our entire childhood with." Kristine gently patted him and took the mic.

"Congratulations. So finally, the couple who faced so many difficulties and had so much romance are going to stay together. You know, I'll never forget that you both had taken 7 whole years to confess your love in the  beginning," Kristine said. The crowd laughed. "And  now that you both are together, there's no one happier than Eros and myself. We've faced so much together, that now, this happiness is just over flowing . And hey, Lucy, remember. I want to see your babies first, okay?" she laughed. Lucy's face turned deep red, and the crowd burst out laughing.

" I really love you both. Our best wishes and love on your new beginning. We're going to stick by your side till the end. We're going to be there for you, forever. Till the rains start to fall. Like I've been there before..," she ended, tears forming in her eyes. "I'll be there for you, because you were there for me too." The gathering screamed in delight and applauded so loudly that the hall filled with the sounds of their claps. Lucy and Blake threw their arms around both of them, as they said,

"Thank  you."

That night, both of them sat down together on the bench in front of their houses.

"It was a great day," Lucy said, looking up at the diamond-like stars.

"Yeah,"Blake agreed. They remained silent for some time and then Lucy got up.

"Its late," she said. "So goodnight, Blake"

"Hey, Lucy," he said, getting up and walking towards her.

"Hmm m?"

He placed his forehead on hers. "I love you"

She smiled. "I love you too."

"We have an appointment with the stylist tomorrow," he said.

"Yes."

Then, she pulled away, grinning.

"Blake , smile," she said. He looked at her in surprise as she clicked a picture of him, standing under the night sky.

"What was that?"

"You got me hypnotized today. Wanted to be so forever. And now I guess I can even if you're not around," she smiled, looking at him with the kind of love that could melt mountains.

The next day Blake and Lucy went to Eros and Kristine who were busy in managing the wedding hall. Blake and Lucy sighed.

"Come here, both of you," they said in unison. Eros and Kristine walked towards them.

"What is all this?," Lucy scolded.

"What is what?" Kristine asked.

"What are you both working so much for?"

"Your wedding."

"We'll handle that"

"BUT."

"You both need time for yourself as well. Will you please stop this?" Blake said, annoyed. Eros and Kristine looked confused.

"Both of you, go and spend time together. We've booked two seats in the restaurant . Go now," Blake said. Eros and Kristine smiled, hugged them, and went out.

Blake and Lucy drove to the stylist.  It was in one of those isolated places which was literally surrounded by trees in both sides. Blake drove along the narrow road.

" I'm so happy, Blake," Lucy said, smiling and looking at him. "Finally everything is going to be okay I it's so difficult to believe that it's happening."

" I know, Lucy," he said, gazing at her glistening face. "We're together. And one step closer"

"And nothing can tear us apart now"

"You know, Lucy, sometimes I ask myself what I have achieved in life. And I always get the same answer," he said, "you."

A crescent smile spread across her face as she looked at him affectionately.

"And now, since we're beginning a new journey, I want to tell you something for one last time," she said.

"mhm?"

"That you've been the best boyfriend ever"

Blake laughed . "You've been the best girlfriend too"

"And I love you," they said in unison.

Lucy was extremely happy. She looked in front, thinking about what would happen in their wedding, future life.. But then, something caught her eye. A distant vehicle, no, a truck,  was coming their way at in immense speed. Her pulse thundered.

"Blake?"

"Yeah?"

"I think something's very wrong... I.. I.. think something's going to hit us....."
