Chapter 3

There haven’t been many times in my life where I was actually afraid. When I let myself into my apartment, I knew something was wrong.

I opened my closet and pulled out the 9mm I had hidden. I quietly cocked it. The click felt too loud.

When I turned the corner to my living room, there was a man looking out my window.

I did have a nice view. I was lucky and got the side of the apartment building that wasn’t face to face with a factory building made of brick. That’s all some residents could see when they opened their windows.

"Freeze." I ordered, my gun aimed right at his back. The man slowly turned and looked at me, his eyes narrowed on me when we made eye contact.

"You don't want to be pointing that at me." His voice was deeper than I’ve ever heard and his bright blue eyes seemed to be almost glowing.

"What are you doing in here?" I asked as I pointed my gun at him. "You’re the cop that was attacked by a dog"

It wasn't a question, but I felt compelled to answer anyway. "And if I am?"

"You're coming with me."

I felt like I should listen to him. But then my brain kicked in. This guy was breaking and entering and now he was trying to kidnap me.

I shook my head, "I'm not going anywhere with you."

He sighed tiredly, "I don't have time for this." he muttered to himself.

"Drop your gun."

My hands immediately went slack and the gun dropped out of my hands. It was like I had no control over myself.

I narrowed my eyes on his, "How did you do that?"

"There are things that you need to be aware of now."

I glanced down at my gun. It was easily reachable. "Like what?"

"We can't talk about it here. We'll talk about it when we're at my home."

"I'm not going to go anywhere with you."

"You keep saying that, but it'll be easier if you just cooperate."

"You're the one who broke into my home. You're threatening to kidnap me. You haven't even told me your name or why you want to take me to your home."

"My name is Grayson Meyers. I'm taking you away from here because it's not safe for you to be here."

"Because of all the B&E's?" I asked sarcastically.

He shook his head, watching my every twitch. He was waiting for me to go for my gun. I needed it for protection against him. He outweighed me by at least 150lbs.

"No, it's not safe for all these humans to be around you." he said it simply.

Who would refer to my neighbors as humans?

"I'm a cop. There’s no safer neighbor than me."

He sighed, "Not anymore."

"As far as I know, I'm still a cop." how dare this man come into my house and order me around. Tell me that I'm not a cop anymore. To tell me that I'm a dangerous neighbor. I felt rage flow through me. This guy didn't know anything about me. Who was he to tell me what to do?

White hot pain flashed through my body as I crashed to the floor, then I blacked out.

Mason POV

I really didn't want to be here anymore. We'd cleaned up that rouge's mess; it was time to go home.

But no.

Grayson just had to check on this chick. We could've been well on our way if she hadn't shown up at the scene. We could've killed the rogue, disposed of his body, and everything would've been chalked up to a random dog attack. I hate rogues...

It was dark, but the florescent lighting kept it lit for the humans. The buzzing made me want to break that light. I'd see better out here if it was off.

Vibration in my pocket made me dig for my phone. It was my sister in laws face with me nephew.

"Yes Casey." I muttered unhappily.

"Grayson’s not answering." She snapped.

I rolled my eyes. "Mind zap him." She had the power; she should use it to satisfy her curiosity.

"He's keeping me out."

I chuckled, "Well you shouldn't have given him access to your abilities."

She growled, "I have to share with my mate. You know how the mating bond works."

I huffed, "Because I have a mate." I replied sarcastically. She knew I didn't have a mate. She knew I didn't ever want a mate.

"Go help your brother with whatever he's doing. You two should've been home by now." she hung up.

I was always so tempted to show her who she's messing with, but the fact that she was my brother’s mate kept me from smacking her.

I shoved my phone back in my pocket and looked around. The street was empty. There were some patrons in a bar down the street. I could hear them chatting about what a shitty day they were having.

I could show them what a shitty day really felt like.

"Mason." I heard my brother’s voice in my head. It used to startle me, but now I was used to it. "She’s coming down the stairs. Be ready to intercept."

I chuckled, "All 120 of her got the jump on you huh?" I responded thru the temporary mind link.

I heard him growl. "She shifted and attacked."

"Uncontrolled wolf?"

"Yes. When the rogue got her he did enough damage."

"We should've stepped in when we had the chance."

"Focus. Get her so we can take her home."

"Right."

I went into the apartment building. The woman at the front desk smiled at me flirtatiously. If I stayed here overnight, I could have her in my bed.

I shook off the thought and went to the door labeled stairs. I winked at the woman before closing the door behind me. Might as well keep my options open.

I could hear the claws on pavement and the huffing of the wolf. She was no doubt tired.

The change took a lot out of the newly changed.

I met the wolf at the second level. She sputtered to a stop like she was on ice. She looked around and knew she was trapped. I could hear Grayson muttering profanities two levels up. He'd be here in a few seconds.

She pinned her ears back and bared her teeth with a low growl. The wolf knew she was outmatched and surrounded...so she lashed out at me. It wasn't hard to keep out of her reach, she was slow and untrained. The only thing that kept me from breaking her bones was the smell of fear that fogged up the stairwell.

When she looked up at Grayson, I took my opportunity and pinned her against the wall.

Grayson out his hand on her throat and ordered her to sleep. It was a trick alphas had, though sometimes it didn't work on rogues. Luckily she was new and had no choice but to listen to the alphas command.

She went limp and I barely managed to keep her from smacking her muzzle in the steps.

I grunted with the effort, she was heavier than I expected her to be.

Grayson smirked at me, his golden eyes glittering with amusement. "You're getting a little out of shape there, little brother."

"Bite me." I snapped back at my brother. I tossed the unconscious wolf at him. "Take her out, I'll distract the human."

He adjusted the weight of the wolf. "Link me when you have all of her attention."

I nodded and straightened out my clothes.

I met Grayson in the truck. We always kept tranquilizers in the back just in case.

Werewolves react weirdly to drugs, so we didn't use them unless we absolutely had too.

The case was in the center console.

"Your dope her up?"

Grayson shook his head, "She should sleep through the ride home."

"Did she say anything about your eyes?" Of course he was referring to the amber tint that showed up when our wolves came to the surface.

"They're beautiful." I mimicked in a girls voice.

"Ok Casanova." He turned his attention to the road, but I knew he was listening to the wolf in the back seat. He was making sure she wasn't going to wake up while we were driving.

"So what are we doing with her?"

"You know what Finn wants. Finders keepers."

I rolled my eyes. "The last thing we need is another chick right now."

He smirked at me, "You’re just jealous."

I sighed. It did suck that when my brothers would be lovey dovey with their mates while I didn't even have a girlfriend. That wouldn't be a hard task to accomplish seeing as I was never lonely. There were plenty of girls willing to be with the beta. But it never felt right to be with humans...not natural.

"So what are we going to do with her?"

"Train her then maybe Finn can ship her off. Our pack isn't ideal for an unmated female to be."

I understood completely. New wolves get very aggressive around unmated females, trying to win over her affections. The men that came attached to those new wolves could be vulgar.

"Does she have to stay with us?"

Grayson nodded. "You know the shit I'll get from Finn if I don't train the wolf I found."

"She wasn't found on our territory. Won't the Alpha here take offense to you stealing a female from his lands?"

Grayson smirked, "It's not my concern what that Alpha thinks. If he were a good Alpha we wouldn't have had to clean up this mess."

"That wolf was trained by us. There's a reason we do what we do. Maybe we should be in charge of training Alphas then since they don't know how to defend worth shit."

Grayson grunted. "I’m too busy to start training alphas."
