Softpaw was up well before the sun had risen despite being out late last night and decided to stick outside of camp today, wanting to familiarize herself with the territory. She had almost ran into dawn patrol, but she changed courses to avoid getting stuck in camp. It was only a matter of time before she found herself at the edge of the forest again, letting the wind ruffle her fur.
"You seem to enjoy the wind." Firestar's meow sounded behind her, this time not scaring her as she watched the moor.
"It's.. nice." She meowed softly before standing up and made her way over to him.
"Well so long as you mind the border, catching some wind shouldn't do you any harm, but for now let's hunt for our clan. I'd like to see what you can do."
"Yes Firestar." Softpaw dipped her head to her mentor before running off into the forest silently. The smells of mouse and vole filled her senses and she chose to follow the mouse since it smelled fresher. Crouching down she stepped lightly, the wind doing her a favor by keeping her sent opposite of her prey as she kept her tail low. The mouse was plump and brown, chewing on the tips of grass not aware of the danger it was in. Leaping forward, Softpaw landing squarely in front of the mouse and quickly bit into its neck, not giving it time to squeak. Satisfied she buried her kill and went on to the smell of vole. It was stale, but as she continued, the smell got stronger and soon she had another kill. Remembering to bury it, Softpaw let herself wander through the woods silently still aware of her mentor watching her from a distance. She wondered if he was proud of her, or thought she looked like a lumbering badger trying to catch her prey. Suddenly, the strong sent of rabbit hit her and she dropped into a hunter's crouch once more. Softpaw was suddenly conscious of how close the moor was and how fast she would need to be to catch this rabbit before it got over the border. As the rabbit turned it's back to her she crept forward avoiding the stick in her path trying to be as quiet as possible that was, until a stick from behind her snapped causing her to wince and the rabbit to shoot off. The she-cat wanted to groan in frustration, but took off after the rabbit as quickly as it had darted off. Determined to get to it, she willed her legs into longer, quicker strides finding a rhythm in it before giving one final lunge, landing into the rabbit's shoulders and quickly bit into its neck. Once it had lost the last of its life, Softpaw got off of it panting trying to bring the air back into her lungs. She sniffed the air and fear settled in her belly as she picked her catch up into her jaws and backed away quickly from the WindClan border. She hadn't crossed it, but it was still too close. Suddenly out of nowhere, a vicious yowl sounded and Softpaw was knocked off her feet, the air being knocked out of her and her prey dropping to the ground.
