Chapter 7: Red roses of the tyrant queen

A swirling landscape fell in front of Hoshi. She did not recognize the place. It was a hedge maze. There were cards with human heads painting roses red. A blonde girl in a blue dress was with the cards. The cards were explaining to the girl. Just to ease the rage of the queen, they were painting them the correct color.
Hoshi was wondering why she was there, what she was seeing.
"Where am I? I though I was in my dorm?," she thought to herself as her vision went black.
-

The young woman awoke in her dorm. She was in her room like she thought. A heavy knock was heard on the door. It sounded adamant.
"Someone is at the front door?," Hoshi asked and got up, slipping on her orientation robe to hide her feminine features.
She put her mask on as well.
"Mmnn... Yuu,... why is someone here in the middle of the night?," Grim asked groggily as the knocking continued, "Is it those ghosts again? They need to know when to stop."
The blonde girl walked downstairs sleepily and to the front door. Through the dingy glass, she saw the shape of someone.
"Helloo? Who is it?," She called out, disguising her voice again.
"It's Ace. Let me in.," the voice of the scarlet eyed boy answered.
Grim grumbled as Hoshi opened the door for Ace, "Ace? Why are you here so late? Ack! A collar!"
Ace stepped in wearing a heart shaped collar with a lock on it, the same kind that was on grim after a red headed small boy used a spell. Hoshi presumed that Ace got caught by the same spell.
"Screw Heartslaybul! I'm never going back, I'm joining your dorm!," the heart marked teen boy fussed.
The grey feline monster was taken aback, "What?!"
"Ace, come on. Tell me what happened.," the mask wearing prefect said and motioned for her guest to follow her.
The collared boy followed his friend and sat down on the clean spot she made for him. He looked around, making a face at all the dust.

The ghosts came out of hiding and began to float around the teenagers, observing the newcomer before floating away. The masked young woman picked up her sleepy monster companion that followed her footsteps. Grim did not complain about being held against the warm young woman.
"That collar. I remember it all too well... it was that red headed psychopath from orientation wasn't it?," Grim asked, "What did you do?"
"I ate a tart.," Ace replied with an annoyed expression and crossed his arms.
"Excuse me? A tart? Are you serious?," Hoshi asked and got a nod from the reddish haired boy in front of her.
The heart marked boy sighed, "That's it. I was hungry from missing dinner and went down to the kitchen to get a snack. I found these three strawberry tarts in the fridge. They were huge!"
the blonde teen girl sat back and listened to Ace while having Grim propped up against her. His fuzzy body felt nice and warm in the cool night air. She still felt a little sore still from what happened before.
"So I took one slice, it was a small slice. But when I was eating, Riddle came in and found me. He told me about who made it and a crazy rule before he used his magic on me.," Ace explained, "Now I can't use magic and am as useless as you, so I came here. OW!"
The redhead winced as Hoshi kicked him lightly for his closing remark. Grim had his ears lowered and a perturbed expression on his face.
"So the both of you are horrible?," the blue flamed monster asked as his forked tail twitched.

"Cmon! Don't you think it's a bit much for eating a little bit of tart?!," Ace pleaded, "For a mage, it's like having your arms and legs shackled and bound! There were three massive tarts! No way he could eat them all!"
"Uh... I guess it's a little much?," Hoshi answered.
"What does that mean?," the ginger haired teen asked.
"You said there were three and they were big right?," Hoshi inquired, "Did you ever consider why they were there?"
"It could have been for a party.," Grim added, "Like a birthday party! Hee hee I'm like a detective!"
The grey monster chuckled and then swiped at the hand that patted him, his little paws padded on the teen girl's skin.
"Birthday party?," Ace repeated incredulously.
"Did you try to apologize?," the masked teen asked, "that would explain everything."
"I honestly thought you'd be more sympathetic. I'm suffering from my housewarden's tyranny!," the heart marked teen boy before he got his nose pinched.
"Food theft is pretty serious.," Hoshi said and let go of his nose, "Even if he did overreact."
"You gotta be kiddin. Damn, you have some grip.," the boy hissed and held his nose.
The masked girl pointed at her guest, "Tomorrow. You're gonna apologize. He'll be sure to forgive you if you do."
Grim grumbled, "It's a crime to mess with someone's meal. Wait a second! Crowley never gave me those cans of tuna! That lying-"
The monster's little muzzle was covered quickly to keep him from finishing his statement. The girl sighed from being so tired and sore.
"Ace, just promise to Apologize? We're all tired from the fight we endured.," Hoshi said and yawned.
"Fine, fine... I'll apologize.," Ace sighed, "But you're coming with me, Yuu. This was your idea."

"Fine with me.," the teen girl shrugged.
"Anyways... have room for me to crash?," Ace asked.
"You were serious?," Grim inquired, "Excluding our room, this entire place is covered in dust. If you want a place to crash, you better clean yourself a place."
"No way in hell.. I'm not cleaning shit.," the heart marked boy hissed, "Yuu~ Let me share your bed~ I won't take up much room, I'm real slim."
Hoshi felt her face flush, she was glad that she had her mask on. But she forgot to disguise her voice because of her sudden flustering.
"No way!," the masked girl squeaked.
Grim put his little paws up, "We already share that bed, I'm not letting you get in it as well!"
The scarlet eyed boy was a little surprised before bursting into laughter, "Hahaha! Yuu! You sounded like a girl, it's hilarious!"
Hoshi put her hands up to her mask's cheeks. It was embarrassing. She almost lost composure and revealed her secret.
"Ace, you wish.," the masked girl said in her deepened voice, "Use the couch. I've already cleaned it a bit."
"Boo. You're heartless. Night.," the teen boy said and flopped onto the sofa.
The blonde got a blanket from a linen closet that a ghost showed her and draped it over Ace. She returned to her room and took off her mask. She let out a breath and set the mask down. She then hung her robe up and climbed back into bed. Grim was already curled up in his spot. The little monster huddled closer to the young woman after she lay down. She put her arm over Grim and went back to sleep. Tomorrow was her first day as a student. She needed to be rested up for it.

Early in the morning, a heavy knocking was on the door. Ace was the one who answered the door while Hoshi walked down the stairs in her mask and robe. She saw it was Deuce who was knocking on the door so hard that he was kicking up clouds of dust.
"Figured you'd run to Yuu.," Deuce said with a serious expression on his face.
"Deuce...," Ace grumbled.
Hoshi fixed her mask on and adjusted her chest bindings that were under her clothes, she walked down and yawned while waving to the dark blue haired teen.
"G'mornin..," She yawned.
She got a waved from Deuce, who turned back to Ace, "You ate the Housewarden's tart. What an idiot you are."
"Aw shuddup, like you're one to talk.," Ace shot back, "Is.. he still mad?"
"More irritated than anything. He took the heads of some of our dormmates who overslept.," the spade marked teen boy replied.
"Sounds like he's on a rampage!," Ace exclaimed.
Hoshi yawned and walked back towards the stairs to get ready. She was stopped by the skinny ghost who haunted her dorm, he was holding a folded set of clothes.
"Headmage asked me to give this to you, it's your uniform.," the gaunt ghost said with a grin, "Go try them on. He also told me that he informed the teachers of your secret, so you'll be fine. Hee hee. Don't forget to put on your cologne. Hee hee."
The ghost faded away and let the girl got to her room, she sidestepped a pipe that had fallen from the ceiling. She picked the pipe up and swung it a few times, feeling the weight and distribution.
'This'll work. I don't think Crowley would allow me to keep that pickaxe.,' (y/n) thought and walked to her room.
She took off the robe and ceremonial shirt, putting on the button up shirt and buttoning it. She put on the black vest next, then the school jacket. Lastly putting on the trousers and spraying the masking cologne. The only problem she had left was that she did not have any shoes. Just the fancy ceremony ones that went with the robes. She heard a tap on her door and opened it to see the chubby ghost.

"Hee hee. I found these when cleaning the gates. They look like they would fit you.," the ghost chuckled while handing the girl a pair of shoes and socks.
The socks were white tabi socks, the shoes looked like platform geta but with a red fabric that covered from the top of the toes to the ankles. She recognized them. These were shoes she had with her when she was taken to this world. So she did bring something with her.
"Thanks. I'm glad you found them. They are very important to me.," the girl sighed with a smile.
"Hee hee. I'm curious how they look.," the ghost chuckled.
The blonde teen slid the socks on and then put on the shoes. She walked out of her room and down the stairs after hiding the steel pipe under her jacket and vest. Deuce and Ace were arguing before spying her.
"Ready now?," Deuce asked and got a nod.
"Yahoo! First day of school, I feel so happy!," Grim cheered.
"Woah, those shoes are something. How did you find something like them?," Ace asked.
"One of the ghosts found them. They were in the gate a was in when I was brought here.," the masked teen answered. The ghosts appeared before the teens.
"Hee hee hee, you all look dressed to kill.," the smallest ghost laughed, "I might just keel over if I wasn't already dead!"
The three ghosts laughed again before the skeletal one spoke up, "Yuu, hide that Pipe better. You don't wanna get in trouble."
"Thanks. We'll be back later.," the blonde girl smiled under her mask and bid the Ghosts goodbye. Together they walked through main street, Grim chiming happily and making a dig at Ace's predicament.
"Grim, Ace has suffered enough.," the teen said.
Ace was fuming, "When I get my magic back, it's your hide."
"Didn't the Headmage just warn us Yesterday to have no more incidents?," Deuce asked, "Besides, you can't participate in class without magic. So let's just go apologize to warden Rosehearts to get the collar removed."

The reddish haired boy grumbled and kept walking. The monster that was walking in front of all of them spun around to speak his musings.
"We have time before class starts, and I'm very curious about all the other dorms.," Grim said, his blue eyes sparkling, "I guess I'll come along to look around while you grovel."
"This isn't a field trip!," Ace snapped at the monster.
Grim scampered behind Hoshi's legs and peeked out. The masked girl looked down at him. The young woman shook her head, causing her bells on her mask to ring. She followed Deuce as he and Ace walked to the hall of mirrors. She looked at the seven mirrors that were all decorated ornately. Deuce and Ace were walking to one that looked to be covered in cards and mushrooms. She followed them into the mirror, they were deposited in a different place. It was beautiful. Like a red palace with a heart motif. Heart shaped rosebushes with red roses liked a paved path. In the middle of the path, right before the building was a heart shaped fountain. Lamposts held swinging flags that were marked with the dorm's insignia.
"Wow! This place is a lot prettier than our dorm!," Grim exclaimed.
"Comaparisons only will make you miserable, we're still working on it.," Hoshi replied and followed the boys around back to a garden with a lovely hedge maze.
'Wait a second. This place feels familiar.,' the mask wearing girl thought.
She saw a boy older than her with strawberry blond hair painting some of the roses. He had some of his hair pulled back to keep it out of his eyes. His green eyes were focused on his task. A small red diamond marking was below his right eye.
"Painting painting, painting roses red, otherwise I'll lose my head!," the boy was singing out as he changed the colors of the white roses to red.
The masked girl walked up behind him silently to see what he was doing. She remembered that she had a dream of cards doing the same things.

The strawblondie turned around and jumped, "Agh! Goodness! What a scary mask!"
Hoshi jumped back, her bells chiming, "Sorry!"
The young man laughed while clutching his chest, "You need something?"
"Um. What're you doing?," Ace asked.
"Haha! I'm painting the roses red!," the diamond marked young man laughed.
Deuce was shocked, "what? Why?"
"Aw, naive freshman, how cute.," the strawblondie laughed, "Wait, I know you guys, you broke the antique chandelier. And you're the magicless student with the naughty monster partner."
"That'll haunt us for the rest of our school lives.," Ace sighed.
"Haha! And you ate the Housewarden's tart!," the diamond marked boy chimed, "I'm lucky! Now I can claim some fame from the hot topics on campus! Quick selfie!"
The young man pulled the group together and took a picture. He looked so happy.
"Okay! It's okay if I post this, right? Gimme your names so I can tag you!," the chipper upperclassmen chattered.
"Uh.. Deuce Spade.," the greenish blue eyed young man answered.
"Ace.," the collared boy huffed.
"I'm Grim. And this ugly brute is Yuu, my henchmen.," the little monster chimed.
Hoahi rolled her eyes, 'This guy seems friendly. If not a little media obsessed.'
"Nice, uploaded! My name is Cater Diamond! Nice to meetcha, Ace and Deuce.," the chipper young man greeted, "But you can call me Cater-Kun or Cay-kun. Haha."
"Cay-san, it's nice to meet you.," Hoshi said as she bowed, 'He's superficial. This doesn't feel like the real him.'
"Oh yeah, Yuu-chan~ you live in that dump called ramshackle right? Man that place doesn't look good no matter what filter I put over it.," Cater said, apparently not able to have a filter.
Grim huffed, "Hey, pal, you've done nothing but talk bad about us!"

"Crap! I don't have time to talk! If we're not ready, it's 'Off with your head!'," the young man exclaimed and picked up a bucket of paint, "Hey, since you're here, why not help out? We can work and talk!"
"Why are you doing it exactly?," Ace inquired.
"Tradition!," Cater chimed back, "Cmon, it'll be fun! Then we'll set up for the croquet tournament by coloring the flamingos!"
'This sounds like absolute madness. But didn't Ace mention that the Queen of hearts ruled a land of madness anyway?,' Hoshi thought to herself.
"Coloring flamingos? Is nothing the right color?," Grim asked.
"See Ace, the tarts were for a party. It must be the Housewarden's birthday.," Deuce said, "No wonder he reacted like that!"
"Nope, it's not Riddle-kun's birthday!," Cater laughed.
"Okay, then whose?," Ace asked.
"Nobody's! It's an unbirthday party!," the strawblondie responded, "It's a special party we have when the housewarden feels like it. As long as it is nobody's birthday."
Ace was confused, "And why do you do that?"
Hoshi sighed and shook her head, she looked around and saw more students running around with tasks. Some had animal features of rabbit ears or cat ears and tails.
"So many questions! Here, I need these roses red, help me out. Magic or anything!," the green eyed upperclassman begged, "Ace and Yuu-chan have to use paint, though. They can't use magic."
Deuce was surprised by the task, "Recolor the roses with magic?"
"Never done it before.," Grim scowled, less than amused.
"Take it easy, I'll show you! Cmon, before I lose my head!," Cater smiled and pulled the masked young woman to a bush and pointed at a rose, "Here, start with this one."
The young woman took the brush from cater and dipped it into the paint before brushing it on the delicate petals. The petals turned red like a naturally red rose would be. The girl stepped back.
"Forgot to tell you, it's magic paint. It sticks to the rose like pink on a flamingo!," the chipper upperclassman laughed, "I guess you're actually not scary under that mask. You're quite adorable!"

Hoshi shook off his words and went back to painting, she wondered if it was safe for use on skin. The color was lovely and reminded her of the makeup her grandmother and dad wore. Plus the lovely red lipstick her mother adored. She sighed and kept painting roses. She jumped back and was barely missed by a spell that was flying towards her. The masked girl looked to see who did it, it was Grim. The formerly red rose was now a bright blue color. This blue also was lovely. Like the blues her mother would paint onto her face for festivals. Or the wonderful blue robe that was enshrined in her family shrine. Cater laughed and fixed the colors, "Nice try, but try envisioning a real red rose when doing the spell."
"Red rose, huh?," Deuce mused.
"This sucks. I wanna use magic again!," Ace groaned.
Hoshi looked at her painting buddy before returning to her task, she wondered if magic was fun to use or have. But then again, most of the magic users in that school were jerks. The got so many nasty looks and jeers from the students when she had been a janitor the previous day. She walked to another bush and started painting it as well. Her brush ran lightly over the petals. She listened to cater explain to the boys the need of tradition in the dorm. From the rules of the Queen of hearts, they had to paint the roses. Then have seven colors of flamingos and hedgehogs to play croquet with, also a flower concert? The masked girl figured the queen really did have a lot of crazy rules to rule over the crazy of her kingdom.
Finally, cater asked if Ace brought a replacement tart for what he ate. When Ace told him they did not, It was then cater told them they had to leave. Hoshi watched the fight break out only for the boys to be thrown out by force. She followed quietly behind them.
"Oi! Yuu, you coulda helped us!," Ace hissed.
She shrugged then stopped. A bell.
"CRAP, WE'RE GONNA BE LATE!," Deuce shouted, "That's the first bell!"
"No! I don't want a blemish on my record!," Grim cried, "What class are we again, Yuu?!"
"1-A. Potionology.," the masked girl replied.
"Same as us, let's move. Hopefully I don't need to use magic for this!," Ace shouted and grabbed Hoshi's hand before breaking into a run.
Deuce and Grim followed them as they all ran to the school building and towards their classroom. As they did, they were scolded by a tall pale young man with reptilian looking yellow slit eyes and styled minty green hair.
