Fireflies

She sat at the edge of the field, arms hugging her legs to her chest, with her face turned up to the sky. The sun was setting fast, giving way for the moon to have its time to shine. She watched as the sun turned the sky pink and orange before it disappeared behind the trees. She could feel the cold of the night envelope her as a small breeze rustled the tips of the tall grass. And she waited.

For hours, she sat at the edge of the field and waited until the moon traced its path across the sky. Around an hour after the sun was fully set and the stars were shining bright, the field before her came to life. Slowly, the wind grew stronger and the grass stirred the fireflies. They erupted across the field in a wave, lighting up the area in front of her. Hundreds of fireflies danced in the grass to a song only known to them.

Oh, how she longed to dance with them. To spin around and hear the music they heard, to feel the excitement that came with being the one to watch as the fireflies lit up her little world.

But it wasn't time yet.

She didn't want to dance alone, so she stayed at the edge of the field and waited, often staying out all night and imagining how it would be when she finally got up to dance with the fireflies. It wasn't time yet, but it would be soon. Soon, she would be dancing under the star lit sky with the fireflies, her excitement and laughter the sounds of a new symphony twirling through the sky.

 Soon.

Until that day would come, she went out to the field every night of summer. For two summers, she went out every single night and listened to the distant sound of the song of the fireflies.

Finally, the day she had waited for came and she felt freedom and life coursing through her veins as she did what she always wanted to do, her friend finally by her side.
