Chapter 3
The palace gardens bloomed in the evening light, their carefully tended paths winding between flowers from a thousand worlds. Ruby walked alone among them, enjoying the peaceful moment, when the sound of footsteps caught her attention. Through the Force, she sensed him before she saw him – General Hux's presence was unmistakable, his heartbeat a steady, nervous rhythm that quickened as he approached.
Today, she had chosen comfort over ceremony, wearing a deep cobalt dress that flowed like water around her curves. No elaborate imperial robes, no constraining corsets – just simple elegance that allowed her to move freely. Her only adornments were a delicate circlet made of blood-red kyber crystals and a single necklace that rested against her collarbone – the one Anakin Skywalker had given her so many decades ago, before everything changed, before Palpatine had twisted him into Vader.
Hux's cheeks flushed pink as he caught sight of her. Even after all these years as her general, he still hadn't mastered hiding his attraction. His pristine white uniform practically glowed in the garden's twilight, every crease perfect, every button polished.
"Hux, my dear general," Ruby said warmly, her fangs catching the last light of day. "Tell me what brings you to my sanctuary at this hour."
She watched him try to maintain his composure, noting how his eyes kept darting to the kyber crystal circlet – so different from the imposing crown Palpatine had worn. This simple band of crystals held more real power than any golden crown ever could, each crystal singing with Force energy that only she could hear.
The general swallowed hard, his carefully maintained control wavering under her gentle smile. In these private moments, away from the ceremony of court and the rivalry with Kylo, Hux's devotion to her was painfully clear – not just to her empire, but to her.
Hux's throat tightened as he forced down a swallow, his voice barely steady. "It's Kylo... he's found something," he muttered, his words hanging in the air like a storm about to break. Ruby, sensing the gravity in his tone, turned fully toward him, her movements slow and deliberate, revealing more of her breathtaking form as her gaze locked onto him with intensity.
Hux felt the weight of her presence, his throat suddenly dry. He swallowed again, trying to gather his thoughts. "What?" she asked, her voice soft yet laced with curiosity, a delicate edge of apprehension creeping in. "What has he found?"
The silence that followed felt heavy, the question lingering between them like an unspoken threat.
"A girl," Hux said, his voice strained with disbelief. "A scavenger, really. She's been helping one of the troops from the Red Sun Order... helping him escape." He paused, glancing around as if the truth itself were a danger. "She brought him here," he added, the weight of the revelation pressing down on him.
The tension in the room thickened, as if the very air had shifted with the importance of the information he had just shared.
Ruby smiled, her lips curling with a mixture of amusement and cunning. "And why is that dangerous, my dear?" she asked, her tone almost mocking. "It only means more men to my cause... to my empire."
She stepped closer, her presence overwhelming as the warmth of her breath brushed against Hux's face. "Dearest General, you worry far too much," she murmured softly, her fingers tracing the line of his cheek with a delicate touch. Then, with a playful glint in her eye, she leaned forward, brushing her lips teasingly against the tip of his nose.
Without another word, she turned and glided away, the cobalt fabric of her dress flowing behind her like liquid silk, leaving Hux standing frozen in place, the faint scent of her perfume lingering in the air.

Ruby soon made her way to the guards' barracks, a striking contrast to the drab and dilapidated structures of Palatine's time. As she stepped inside, she was greeted by the sight of well-crafted wooden beams, polished to a warm sheen, and walls adorned with vibrant murals depicting historical victories. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the camaraderie of soldiers sharing stories and laughter as the scent of hearty meals wafted through the air.
The barracks, with their carefully arranged bunks and ornamental touches, emanated a sense of dignity and purpose. Bright flags adorned the windows, fluttering gently in the breeze, showcasing the pride of the men and women stationed here. Ruby couldn't help but appreciate the transformation—the once austere quarters had evolved into a comfortable and inviting haven for the guards, embodying a sense of community that had long been absent in the shadow of Palatine's reign. Each detail spoke of a newfound respect for those who served, a palpable sense of hope for the future.
Captain Bloom glanced up, a grin spreading across his face. "Ah, Express! There you are," he called out, gesturing for her to join him. He led her down the corridor to a room where a dark-skinned trooper stood, his armor stripped from him, revealing the scars of countless battles etched upon his skin.
The trooper was engaged in conversation with a girl clad in a light tunic, her demeanor bright and open, contrasting sharply with the trooper's serious expression. She seemed to be listening intently, her eyes wide with curiosity as she leaned in closer, clearly captivated by the stories he was sharing. The atmosphere in the room felt charged with a blend of tension and warmth, a moment suspended in time between the weight of the soldier's experiences and the innocence of the girl's fascination. Ruby couldn't help but feel that she had stumbled upon something significant, a connection forged between two very different lives.
Both the trooper and the girl snapped their attention toward Ruby as she stepped into the room, her presence filling the space with a vibrant energy. Ruby smiled warmly, folding her hands comfortably over her belly as she exuded a sense of ease and familiarity. "At ease, dearest. So, what are your names?" she asked, her green eyes sparkling with genuine interest as they darted between the two.
The dark-skinned trooper straightened slightly, though the tension in his posture softened under her gaze. "FN-1217, ma'am," he replied, his voice steady yet respectful, a hint of the soldier's edge still lingering in his tone.
Ruby leaned forward slightly at the waist, her expression inviting. "Dearest trooper, here in my empire, we call each other by name, so tell me a name you'd like." Her smile was disarming, the kind that encouraged openness and connection, giving the trooper the sense that he was more than just a rank or a number.
The trooper hesitated, glancing at the girl beside him before looking back at Ruby. "You... you can call me Finn," he finally said, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face but quickly replaced by a newfound confidence.
The girl, seeing the shift in Finn's demeanor, chimed in with enthusiasm, "And I'm Rey! It's great to meet you, Ruby!" Her voice was bright, carrying the innocence of youth, contrasting with the weight of the world Jalen carried.
Ruby smiled wider, clearly pleased. "Finn and Rey, it is then! It's a pleasure to meet you both. Now, tell me more about yourselves! What brings you here?" Her voice was inviting, encouraging them to share their stories in a space that felt safe and welcoming.
Finn looked a bit worried, his gaze shifting between Ruby and Jalen. "Well, I, uh... kinda ran away," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck as he tilted his head slightly, the weight of his words hanging in the air.
"Ran away? I suppose Snoke isn't a good leader, then," Ruby remarked, arching an eyebrow, her tone light yet probing.
Finn shook his head emphatically. "Not at all," he said, a hint of frustration seeping into his voice as he recalled his experiences. He then nodded in Rey's direction, a grateful smile spreading across his face. "She helped me when I crash-landed on Jakku."
Rey's eyes brightened at the mention of her name, and she stepped forward, her enthusiasm shining through. "Yeah, I found him stranded in the desert. He looked like he could use a friend," she said with a spark of mischief in her tone. "We've been through a lot together since then."
Ruby's expression softened as she looked at them. "It sounds like you both have quite the adventure under your belts. Friends can make all the difference in times like these," she said, her voice filled with warmth. "But running away from something can also mean you're searching for something else. What are you hoping to find?"
Finn glanced at Rey before meeting Ruby's gaze. "I'm hoping to find out who I really am, away from the First Order," he said, a flicker of determination in his voice. Rey nodded in agreement, her eyes sparkling with hope. "And to fight for what's right, instead of just following orders," she added.
Ruby smiled knowingly, sensing the strength in their words. "Then you're already on the right path. It takes great courage to choose your own destiny." She paused for a moment, looking thoughtfully at Jalen. "And you, Jalen—what's your story?"
Jalen paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts as he looked between Ruby and the others. "The same as Finn," he began, his voice steady yet laced with emotion. "We were brothers... Snoke took that from me. He... he murdered my real brother."
The weight of Jalen's words filled the room with a palpable tension, a shared understanding of loss hanging in the air. Finn glanced at Jalen, his expression one of solidarity and empathy, knowing the pain of losing someone to the oppressive force of the First Order.
Ruby's expression shifted to one of compassion. "I'm so sorry to hear that," she said softly. "It's heartbreaking to lose someone you care about." She reached out a hand, offering a gesture of support that meant more than words could convey.
Jalen continued, his voice growing stronger as he shared his story. "I wasn't even given a chance to mourn him, to think for myself. We were trained to follow orders, to be nothing more than soldiers. But I chose to break free. I want to honor my brother's memory by fighting against what took him from me."
Rey stepped closer, her resolve evident. "You're not alone anymore, Jalen. We're all fighting for something greater—freedom, justice, and hope. We can be the family we choose." Her words resonated like a battle cry, igniting a spark of determination in the air.
Ruby nodded in agreement, her eyes shining with encouragement. "That's the power of connection, of friendship. Together, you can find strength in each other and reshape your destinies. You've both already taken the first step—now let's see where it leads you."
The room glowed with a renewed sense of purpose, as each of them felt the pull of their shared journey, united by their struggles and hopes for a better future.
