Chapter 43
When she arrives at the spirit courtyard, Jīvitaya lingers at the doorway. Her mind is battling with the fear of using the power as well as the encouragement of her mother and Kysanden to use it. Finally, she forces herself to step inside and looses a breath. Azan steps toward her.
"Getting over your fear is going to be one of your biggest challenges, if not the biggest challenge of learning how to use the power of spirit. But you've taken the first step, you've forced yourself to start. So let's get to work. I want you to try and see the aura around me. It will appear as a ring of light around the outside of my body."
Jīvitaya frowns. "How?"
"Open your senses."
Jīvitaya frowns, confused but does as he asks. She sees his light with strands of red, pale blue, dark blue, silver, burgundy, and some gray strands, but she doesn't think that's what he wants her to see. That's the nature sight. She looks at the edges of his figure, hoping to see something there, but there is nothing. But she saw something once before, a ring of light around her mother. That must be what she is looking for. Encouraged, she pushes aside the nature sight and tries again. A ring of light flickers to life around him at last, and she grins. As she watches, careful not to lose her concentration, the ring brightens.
"Well done. What part of it were you struggling with, despite it being relatively easy for you?"
"When I normally open my senses, I see the lights of nature, so I was confused. I had to push them aside to see the aura. It was as if it was another layer to the senses I already had and I just had to unveil it."
Azan nods in approval. "Good. Now I want you to try to push a thought toward me of doing something. Don't try and make me do it, just send the thought of the action."
Jīvitaya nods and thinks of a handstand, then tries to push the thought out of her head and towards him. Sweat beads on her forehead and he stops her.
"Don't force it out of your head, it's part of your mind. Think of it more as if you're speaking aloud instead of thinking in your head."
She pushes a thought of a backflip to him, trying to share the thought instead of ripping it out of her mind to send to his. A thought is sent back to her, of her doing a backflip. She frowns, and shrugs, chooses to do one. She smoothly flips herself over and gracefully lands a foot away. She sends another thought, of a gymnastics set, and he sends one back of her doing the target practice on the set, but without the targets. She smiles, reaching up to grab the bars made out of air. She swings herself up and throughout the course, finally landing gracefully on her feet once more after a roll.
Azan claps. "You seem to be quite skilled with telepathy already, and the viewing of auras after that initial hurdle, so let's try astral projecting, and maybe telekinesis." She pales and he sighs.
"Lilaria, you can do it. I want you to project, I won't harm you for doing it." She nods, still pale and uneasy. "I want you to think of standing somewhere else than you are now, but keep your body where it is. It might help if you close your eyes."
She closes her eyes and imagines herself standing on the other side of the courtyard, next to the entrance. She opens her eyes again slowly, wanting to have been successful but also fearful of her Drial's reaction to her if she is successful. She finds herself standing where she thought of being, but when she looks up and sees her body standing where she was before, her eyes snap closed in fright. She opens them again to find herself back in her body. She looks up at Azan to see him frowning slightly.
"You projected, but not for very long. I know that you should have been able to hold it for longer, so what happened?"
"I saw myself."
He nods in understanding. "Seeing your body shouldn't frighten you. You aren't dead, and can still control your body a bit when your mind is projecting yourself. So try again."
She does try, but she is once again startled back into her body by the sight of seeing her body from outside of it. She sighs, and tries again, managing to look at her body without it shocking her.
